I've been singing in various styles for over 15 years, and professionally as a soloist and chorister for nearly 10. I have advanced studies in vocal pedagogy, and my teaching is centered around developing a healthy, free, and resonant tone based on science. I am used to teaching students who prefer technical, very voice-science-based learning, as well as students who learn in a more abstract fashion, so I would be able to suit your needs either way!

I have all students show proficiency in the basics of healthy singing techniques through study of classical literature (art song, aria) prior to the study of more specialized styles (broadway, opera, etc.). A singer who can master healthy singing can sing in any style they should choose!

About James

I have served as a conductor, clinician, and soloist throughout the US and abroad. I founded the Carolina Choral Artists, a chamber choir based in North Carolina that specializes in music of living composers. I've performed as a tenor and countertenor with numerous organizations including Madison C

I have been playing and teaching banjo since 2006, and I'm always very excited to introduce new students to this unique instrument. I focus on the "Scruggs-style" method of playing 5-string banjo, and we'll work on techniques used in common bluegrass and folk tunes. As you advance, I'll help you in creating your own banjo solo breaks.

So far so good. Very patient as mistakes after mistake was made. Corrected quite a few mistakes I was making so that my habits would be good habits from the start. Let me talk to myself as I messed up and complimented me when I was on the right track.

Great lesson! Thanks!

complete novice; adult student. First lesson very relaxed. Excellent blend through-out lesson of questions and information my goals and background as well as instructor's goals for me and his background. First "technical" part of lesson was manageable and care taken by Lyle to make sure I understood what was being presented. I left the first lesson feeling this would be a good fit between instructor and student

I LOVE music! I also love helping others find music inside themselves! I was fortunate enough to grow up with a voice teacher for a mother and a choral director for a father, parents who also helped others find their love for music.
Music is an excellent way to tell stories and connect to your audience. I would so enjoy the opportunity to share in these experiences with my students, teaching basics in simple vocal production, developing already attained skills, and coaching performance pieces. While I am very serious about music, I fully believe that these sessions should be FUN. No one wants to put real effort into something that feels like a chore!
I aim to challenge my students in a way that is enjoyable for the student, myself, and the future audiences!!

My partner teaches performance and acting. It is important to know how to marry vocal technique with a strong performance so neither one suffers. In today's market acting is as important as singing well music videos and live performance keep the artist viable and working it is a visual market so acting plays a vital role in a singers career. A working singer has to be able to tell the story to keep the audience engaged and interested.

We are so thankful we found Patrick! Patrick is a very effective teacher who’s able to relate and motivate students. Our daughter was loosing interest in playing piano due to her former teacher’s approach. Now she’s back to practicing because she wants to and is so excited to see Patrick each week. We are very greatful that she’s back to loving piano and continuing to learn.

"Most excellent first guitar lesson to where we actually played a song together. I'm blown away. What fun! I only hope I can remember the chords when I practice on my own, and I look forward to my next lesson with Mike. I can already tell I'll be signing up for more lessons. Great teacher, and I can say that because I tried to learn some years ago with another instructor, and he made me feel like I'd just never get it and may as well give up. Mike erased all that negativity for me in 30 minutes. Thanks, Mike!"

"I loved my lessons with Omar! He's very knowledgable, and not just about the instrument but music in general. He worked with me for about 7 months to help achieve my goal of learning to improvise on the bass guitar. Omar is very easy to talk to and very funny. He knew how to take complicated music theory and really break it down so that I could understand it better. I left each lesson with an assignment, a technique or a song to practice what we learned in that week's lesson.

I feel very comfortable with being able to be at a jam session and play along with the rest of the group. He taught me how to come up with licks using factorials, how to create a solo using modes and adding some flavor to the solos with techniques such as pop and slap or changing the tempo.

Thank you, Omar, for being such a great teacher! I feel much more confident in myself as a bass player because of the time you spent with me and all of the knowledge you departed onto me. I am very appreciative of you for that - thanks again!"

"Jimmy is very locked in as an instructor.

I struggled with some of his instructions at first but he will push and guide you in the direction you need to go. With this guidance comes exercises physical as well as verbal. He will paint pictures so you understand your instrument better. Then use exercises so you can understand what those pictures actually are.

He understands all his crafts very well and wants you to be able to do the same."
