I am a seasoned language teacher, of both adults and children. Making languages come alive through interesting anecdotes, songs, and stories, is my specialty. My schooling, from age four to 14, was 100% in French. Boy, did those nuns drill us in grammar!

About Bettina

I lived in Israel for over a decade, and graduated from the University of Jerusalem with degrees in Education and History. I regularly read Torah, chant megillot, and lead services in my synagogue.

I grew up in Sweden, speaking Swedish at home, but going to French school. At age four, I was immersed in a French environment, and had to sink or swim. I swam! In my late teens, my family moved to Israel, so I became fluent in Hebrew as well. I understand a lot about the language acquisition process.

While languages fascinate me, and come easily to me, I understand that that is not the case for everyone. I am very patient, and willing to try different methods in order to succeed. I realize that some people learn best by seeing the materials, while others need to hear them, or even sing them! Others need to move their bodies and engage in

kinesthetic learning. I facilitate all these methods.
I have taught all ages, from preschoolers to the elderly. I have taught in schools, preschools, informal educational settings (like summer camps) as well as one-on-one privately.

I’m very flexible with timing, and available as often as you’d like, Sunday to Friday.

Bettina helped me to succeed at speaking French with my non-English speaking friends in Paris, on a recent trip to Paris. She helped me realize that I could speak the language again. Bettinas’ style, knowledge, and patience are some of her keys to my success in Paris. I appreciate her effort. I will continue in a manner such that I will not lose this progress. Merci beacoup!

She has been tutoring and teaching French since 1990 and loves to share her passion for the French language.

About Gina

Hello!
I am Gina and I am a specialist in Italian, Portuguese, Spanish and French. I have been teaching and tutoring foreign languages since 1990. I teach adults, college students, high school and elementary students. I have taught in schools, community programs, language classes for businesses, in person and online. I can help you prepare for an exam or class, teach you language for business or travel- or just for the love of the language.

I have been multilingual since a young age and have always had a passion for languages. I studied multiple languages in school and went on to earn both a Bachelors and a Masters degree (University of Connecticut) in Italian, Portuguese, Spanish and French language and literature.

I am an active member of multiple foreign language groups in my community, including the Alliance Française of Ch

arleston, Nuovo Cinema Italiano film club, Dante Society of Charleston, Cercle Littéraire, Brasileiros em Charleston, Conversemos en Español, and other conversation and language groups.

I do translation and interpretation work, travel extensively, do foreign language tours and am very passionate about sharing my love of the Italian, Portuguese, Spanish and French languages.

My focus in teaching is how to acquire a foreign language just as one acquires their native language, making that language a part of one’s life.

Whether you are brand new to the language or have been studying for awhile- I would love to be your guide on your language journey!

My strong interest for languages oriented me towards a "Literature Baccalaureate" for which I studied - among other fields - German, English, Ancient Greek and Latin, and graduated Summa cum Laude in 2010. After high school, I went on to study for five years at Sciences Po Paris, France's elite school for social and political sciences.

Learning about the hidden history of words and the construction of sentences has always fascinated me, and I strongly believe that this is what makes the difference between a regular native speaker, and one who can actually transmit his knowledge of the language. Writing and speaking a proper french is not enough. When it comes to teaching, one has to be able to explain the "why" behind each word, idiom and grammatical rule, because that is how we remember best. Combined with a burning desire to understand movies, songs and books in their original version, this method makes wonders. Because as my best teacher once told me : “ We get into a culture ...

I'm a Certified Interpreter in French (along with Romanian, Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese) by the Defense Language Institute Monterrey, California.
Since middle school I loved foreign languages which proved to be very rewarding starting with high school when traveling around the world with shooting competitions.
Visiting France and other French speaking countries on three continents allowed me the affinity of learning different accents and slangs of the same language.

Learning any foreign language opens doors in life whether on personal or professional level, and I sincerely believe that anybody can learn anything disregarding their age; in fact, I have friends who late in life decided to learn foreign languages or various skills that they always wanted to learn, so, I encourage you to do the same.

Group students are welcome at a special rate.

About Isabela

Before reading about me, I'd like to share up front the honor that my newest student, R., has brought to me by choosing to learn Romanian. Nothing special so far except that he is 100 years old!!!! Yes, you read that correctly: a century old. He is the outmost inspiring person in my life by teaching me that age is just a number and that learning can happen any day if we choose so. R is a medical doctor, a psychologist, a chemist and biologist. Words can't even define how great of a man he is and how grateful I am to learn from him, too. For instance, about a famous language called "esperanto", a language created in the late 19th century.

I'm an enthusiastic learner even after 19 years of formal education (two Masters, one Bachelor) earned on two continents continued by US military education in various forms, and formally tested studen

t who needed to document skills that were not formally captured on paper (like the foreign languages I know).

I love interacting with people and pass on my knowledge from five visited continents, instill love for learning and continuous curiosity for any subject out there. Nothing is impossible when you set your mind to it. Failing once doesn't mean that you'll never win (proof in my athletic years and life ever since); determination, hard work, self-motivation and a good supporting system can bring to reality even the most insignificant dreams that we believe may not come true, and especially those in which we passionately trust.

I believe in breaking down a goal into objectives, assigning tasks to each one of them, and then sticking to achieve them.

I'm a Certified Instructor with the Department of Homeland Security. My hobbies include practicing foreign languages (and proper grammar rules which highly reflect on one's education) by speaking them, learning about cultures and slangs, etymology, watching foreign movies, traveling internationally, taking photos, reading (a lot), carefully planning with room for error and impulsive decisions (to take the boredom out of things), meeting with life long friends, drawing, painting, and spending time outdoors for inspiration and health.

I'm elated at the opportunity of brainstorming with you and giving you tools to be an independent learner.

I was born and raised in the Loire Valley of France (the "Valley of the Kings"), where the purest form of French is spoken. Contrary to what you may have been told by other teachers, the accent learned in Paris is harsh and jarring to most people, much like the New York City accent sounds rough to most Americans. But, having also lived in Paris for 22 years, I can teach that accent, too, if that is what you prefer.

In my numerous years of teaching French I have brought many students to complete fluency using the unique, proprietary teaching method I developed.

I teach a full range of students: from complete beginners, to people preparing for travel, to university professors needing assistance in book translations.

To keep lessons interesting and fun, I always connect real-life situations to what you are learning, so the information sticks and is easily recalled. I also touch on the etymology of words and how English and French are frequently interrelated. This is a great way for ...

French Grammar Rules: Passé Composé for Regular Verbs

By Megan L.

Ready to try your hand at speaking about past events in French? Tutor Carol Beth L. shares the grammar you'll need to know... So perhaps you know now how to conjugate French verbs in the present tense. You can talk about things that are happening now. But what about what happened yesterday, last week, or last year? The basic past tense in French, also known as the passé composé, is used to talk about events in the past. It is aptly named because it is composed (composé) of two parts: …
