Thomas J. W. is an active music teacher, composer, adjudicator, and clinician in the greater Philadelphia area. He has over fifteen years experience as a concert band director, marching band director, jazz improvisation instructor, choral director, private instructor, and marching drill writer. His directing career has included small rural band programs, small metro programs, large high-achieving suburban programs, and non-profit youth bands. In addition to his band compositions, he also has over forty unpublished vocal arrangements to his credit, most written for use with collegiate men's a cappella groups. Thomas taught over 600 online and local private music lessons in 2016.
Thomas has a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education from The Pennsylvania State University. He holds a teaching certificate in the states of Pennsylvania
and New Jersey and has taught at the secondary level in both states. In addition to both instrumental and choral ensembles at Penn State, Thomas was a student leader in the Penn State Blue Band and a member of the brass section of the Cadets of Bergen County Drum and Bugle Corps in 1993 and 1994. He served as an Associate Director of the Warren Junior Military Band of Youngstown, Ohio from 1995 to 2005. He also served as a visual staff member for the renowned North Penn Marching Knights of Lansdale, PA for one season in 2004.
He is a current adjudicator with Drum Corps International and Cavalcade of Bands. He is a member of MENC, PMEA, NJMEA, ASCAP, CASA, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and the National Band Association. He appeared in the Marquis Who's Who Among American Educators in 2004 and 2005, an honor rarely bestowed upon teachers, as students who appear in the Who's Who Among American High School Students must nominate them. He currently is a music teacher at the Center for Performing and Fine Arts of the PA Leadership Charter School in West Chester, PA and resides in Downingtown, PA with his wife and two sons.

*** Lesson Details *** My lessons are tailored to the needs and interests of each student. If a student is involved in school music ensembles, we will work with their lesson books from school in addition to material outside of the books, including SmartMusic, Noteflight, and teacher-created materials. We will focus on building proper tone production and individual technique - something that often is difficult to learn in a large ensemble setting.
I am capable of starting a beginner student on any band instrument including percussion, any classical string instrument (violin, viola, cello, string bass), and piano. I can begin a student on drum set and work with them through their first method book, but I would then recommend they find a specialized drum set teacher after a period of six to twelve months.
For advanced students, I work from selected conservatory etude books on developing advanced skills and can work with students on audition pieces for honors bands/orchestras or college auditions.
My lessons are a half-hour once a week, with the option of working for 45 minutes or 60 minutes.
Thomas is honestly an amazing musician and teacher. He was really patient with me. Despite having to deal with major timezone differences (as I live in Myanmar), he took the time to figure it out. Also, he helped me figure out the stuff it took me months to figure out. He also really knows what he's doing. I learned so much in that hour of practice. 10/10 would recommend him.

I believe that it is incredibly important to encourage students to explore a number of creative avenues within music. Therefore, I am very open to having students explore music outside the classical canon in addition to experimenting with improvisation and composition. An additional component of my teaching style is finding unique and interesting ways to keep students motivated and teaching them how to effectively practice and learn on their own.

I am a professional cellist, skilled in all solo, chamber, and orchestra settings. My playing has invited me into the top ranking music festivals in the world including Tanglewood Music Center, Aspen Music Festival, Music Academy of the West, and many others. These opportunities have led me to perform with the New York Philharmonic.
Growing up, I studied with a Philadelphia orchestra cellist who prepared me for conservatory auditions. After being accepted into all 7 universities and conservatories I applied to including the Juilliard School, I decided to go to the Cleveland Institute of Music where I got my Bachelors of Music in cello performance. I studied with the former principal cellist of the Cleveland Orchestra, and also with one of the best Suzuki pedagogues in the country. I, then, got a Masters in Music in cello performance
from Northwestern University's Bienen School of Music. There, I studied with one of the most internationally renowned cello professors in the world who has shaped me into the musician I am today. In addition, I got my Suzuki Certification in all 10 levels of cello books after completing a 2 year year rigorous Suzuki pedagogy program.
In my second year at Northwestern, I won a fellowship, covering my full tuition and acceptance into The Civic Orchestra of Chicago. This is the apprentice orchestra under the Chicago Symphony. We worked with all the conductors that came in to play with the symphony. Yo Yo Ma, the most famous cellist of all time, is the creative consultant for the Civic Orchestra and we got to work with him 4 or 5 times a year.
I have traveled and performed with my string quartet ATLYS representing Lincoln Center in New York City. We have traveled around the world playing crossover music, where we play arrangements of pop, jazz, folk, traditional, rock, indie, alternative, rap, but always return to the forever-beautiful classical quartets, as well.
Because of this, I have learned to play extended techniques on the cello and learned different styles of playing, like Celtic gigs and reels and cool jazzy bass lines. I think this is a fun unique quality that I can add to a student's cello development when studying with me.
I arrange music for string quartet, too. I think it's important for my students to also learn some basic music theory as it can develop a student's understanding of music at a much deeper level. This can make a student appreciate how a piece is created and where a phrase needs tension or where it needs to be released. It's very important for their musicality.
As a violist and string enthusiast, my appreciation and knowledge of the cello runs fairly deep. I had studied and taught myself how to play the cello with the guidance of a professional cellist some many years ago, but I've always been eager to teach the cello to any willing student with a deep appreciation. Students can expect a curriculum catered to their needs and desires, whether they be to on the road to a professional musician or just the hobbyist and a teacher who is dedicated to their educational growth and desires.
I am currently a junior at Ramapo College studying music education but I am no foreigner to teaching. I have been teaching for some years now with general ages ranging between 3 to 25, in the violin, viola and cello. I have also taught music theory from a beginner's standpoint to a college sophomore level in conjunction with teaching said instruments.
