Private Guitar Teacher

I've been playing guitar for over 12 years & spend most of my professional & personal life doing so. I'm fluent in nearly every style of music in the Western world (as well as some from the East, such as Celtic music, ragas & Japanese traditional music).

About Alex

Hey, my name is Alex. I'm a multi-instrumentalist (guitar, bass, Oud, bouzouki, keyboards, voice, drums, flute, etc.), composer, performer, recording artist, arranger/orchestrator/transcriber, recording engineer/producer & music educator.

I graduated from the University of St. Thomas "Cum Laude" in 2011 with a Bachelor's Degree in Guitar Performance, with minors in Music Production & Composition. While attending St. Thomas I served as the Music Theory tutor, as well as the live sound/stage/light/recording technician for student & faculty recitals.

I have been playing professionally & teaching for over a decade. My passion for music is something that I love to share with anyone else who feels inclined to make music. My goal is to share the skills & knowledge I've acquired throughout my experiences with those willing to learn & dedic

ate themselves to the craft of making music.

I am a full-time member of Maiden Dixie (country/rock; guitar/vocals), Sumo Seven (Funk; bass/vocals), & Armadillo Tank (Prog rock; guitar/vocals). Along with my solo band, I perform for numerous pit orchestras, bands, tributes, & artists around the Twin Cities area.

In February 2019, I released my debut solo album, "Sonic Chef's Circus Absurdities".

*** Lesson Details ***
I am an experienced gigging musician in most major genres of music: classical, jazz, blues, rock, funk, folk, metal, acoustic fingerstyle/slap, instrumental rock, "shred," pop, world music, electronica, etc. & feel comfortable conveying the techniques, approaches & idioms to a student by breaking them down into digestible components, while making these new ideas relatable to material they are already familiar with.

In the end, I want the student to learn what they're most interested in learning. I'm here to answer any questions they may have & with my experiences, I feel confident that I will be able to either answer these questions or point them in the right direction. Some topics covered:

Scales/modes
Ear training
Instrument-specific techniques (ie bending, tapping, sweep picking, etc.)
Songwriting & Composition
Arranging & Orchestrating
Sight-reading
Improvisation
Chordal theory & how to read charts
Practice routines & approaches
Instrument maintenance
Instrument-based gear (guitars, amplifiers, effects, picks, slides, capos, etc.)

The student will learn at the pace they set for themselves & can only get out of it the amount of effort they put forth. I expect my students to practice on a regular basis (however brief each session may be). Consistency is key for progress to be made, & if they hold up their end of the bargain, the payoffs will be quite substantial!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Practice amplifier, tuner, music stand(s), guitar picks & cables.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide guitar neck paper. I expect the students to have their own instrument & any materials they may need to achieve the goals they've set for themselves (such as a weekly notebook).

*** Specialties ***
Progressive rock, classic rock, blues, jazz, funk, disco, classical, acoustic fingerstyle/slap, flamenco guitar; music theory, sight-reading, composition, songwriting, film scoring, music production.

As a self-taught guitarist who later went to college for music and now runs a guitar curriculum blog, I tailor all my lessons to the student's age, ability level, music interests, and preferred learning style. No matter what Riffs, Parts, Changes, and Improvisational skills you want to learn, I can teach you, but more than that, I can teach you how guitarists teach themselves.

About Richard

Rick's been teaching Guitar, Banjo, and Ukulele at his home, and at the Mount Olivet School of Music in South Minneapolis, ever since graduating with a degree in Music from the University of Minnesota Duluth in 2003. He plays around town in 3 bands and also does the occasional Pit Orchestra and Wedding gig. He also taught at Dayjams Rock Music camp in St. Paul for the five summers of its existence. In his spare time he writes YA Stories and Musicals, he also runs a Songwriting and Music Theory Blog about Tonal Trends in popular music, a Guitar Curriculum Blog based on Karate Belts, and is a regular contributor to the music magazine Flypaper by Soundfly.

*** Lesson Details ***
Depending on student interest, lessons can consist of Ear Training, Improv/Jamming, learning Popular Guitar Riffs/Changes/Parts/Etc., Note Reading, the Music Biz

, and learning about all the cool new Music Technologies of the day. Rick also loves to transcribe any and all music the student wants to learn but for which they cannot find the sheet music or internet tab. Rick prefers to teach what the student wants to learn, but if they're not sure what that is, he helps them figure that out.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Wifi, Computer, and iPhone. I make good use of technology during lessons. Much used apps include Yousician, Anytune Phrase Trainer, TabPro, and the Guitar Toolkit (metronome, tuner, etc.)

*** Travel Equipment ***
Music Stand (if needed), and iPhone apps.

*** Specialties ***
Music Theory and Songwriting.

Alex has inspired my son to love playing music for the rest of his life. I can't think of a more wonderful gift. His technique in teaching allowed my son to enjoy learning guitar by playing songs he wanted to play. This made him want to practice just for the fun of it! Alex taught my son from the time he was 9 years old until he was 15. The easy going, positive attitude Alex exudes encouraged my son along his journey and made a strong bond and connection between the two of them. I wholeheartedly encourage anyone who would like to learn to play guitar to sign up for lessons with Alex!

Alex is incredibly knowledgeable and great with students off every age group! I took lessons from him for five years and my only regrets were not having more time to practice so I could get more out of my lesson times.
During lessons we worked on sight reading, ear training, memorizing chords and scales, different picking and strumming patterns, theory lessons, and anything else that I discovered and wanted to try.

Expect to play the material and songs that interest you the most. Warmups are made out of any hang up in the material and just enough music theory is used to build the foundation for progression to the next level. Lead sheets are often used so we will learn to read standard notation, tablature and chord charts. This is great companion to musicians' greatest asset our ears!

I've been playing in various bands for the past 10 years in MPLS. Brat Pack Radio and Anthony Shore Elvis Tribute.

About Jack

Hi, there! My name is Jack Mansk and I can't wait to meet you! I've been teaching private lessons since 2006 and have loved helping my students learn to play guitar better, through recitals and recording projects. I went to McNally Smith College of Music and earned a Bachelor degree in guitar performance in 2006. I'm an encouraging and engaging person and my teaching style is playing the songs you like to help you get better at guitar. I look forward to helping you reach your goals!

I started music when I was 5. My grandma, an amazing classical pianist, would put quarters on the backs of my hands as I played my first songs and if they didn't fall off, I could keep them. Kids (as young as 6):
The most important thing for a child beginner is that music becomes a positive part of their life. I want each to kid to be successful, which means balancing fun with structured, goal-oriented lessons. Your child will set goals

Aspiring Songwriters:
Songwriting is the main reason I play and teach music. The songwriter's goal is to communicate their feelings, thoughts, and imagery through their own musical language. I will help you build your language with music theory lessons, improvisational exercises, and sharing knowledge from my never-ending study of great songwriters. We can even record demos during lessons.

Adults:
Some of my favorite students are adults who decided to give it a shot. For one, adults learn faster and function better, and it's fun to watch them improve rapidly, play (and sometimes perform!) their favorite songs.

Lessons will be held in my home recording studio next to the MIA.

Guitar was my main instrument from about 2006-2013 and I understand the instrument very well. (I was pretty obsessive about the guitar for those years.) I have played lots of blues, rock, jazz, fingerpicking, and folk music. Just tell me what type of music you want to learn to play and I will help you get there.

About Paul

I have played piano my whole life, and I also play guitar and trumpet. I love jazz, classical, contemporary, and rock music and many other diverse styles. I am an improviser, composer, and music theory enthusiast, very in touch with the creative side of music.

Iā€™m easygoing and patient. I put thought into each individual student and will design a curriculum around your particular interests and needs. I can teach in traditional ways, or I can teach through improvisation, call-and-response, imitation, transcription and other organic and intuitive learning methods.

I believe that practicing your instrument should be intrinsically rewarding, and can teach you how to learn in a way that makes practice not a chore. I believe in the value of music listening, having role models, and closely studying the music we love. I often play by ear,

and believe it is a learnable skill that will help you connect with music more naturally.

I hope you'll contact me and we can learn some music together!

If you want to "shred Wylde riffs in 4 weeks or less," this isn't for you. If you want to learn music and get much better at your instrument (guitar in my case), this guy is definitely for you. He has the background, formal education, experience and passion to get you there, if you can put the effort."

How to Write a Song on Guitar Using Just 3 Chords

By Megan L.

Even if you just started learning to play guitar,  you already have the tools to write your first song. Guitar teacher Aimee B. shares how to get started... You can write a song on guitar as early as after your first lesson or once you’ve learned a few basic chords. Whether you ultimately want to accompany your lead vocal, jam with others, or to be a wailing lead guitarist, you can, at anytime, write your own unique song. So where do you begin? How do you write a song? Here' …
