Setting frequent goals in form of group classes and recitals keeps us in full sail and teach us to enjoy the act of playing both alone and in front of friendly audience. I teach both classical and Suzuki methods. I like to keep my students musically well fed and encourage exploring music reading and music theory next to practical skills. I stir my students toward high standard personal level in their studies, an ingredient from Finnish cultural climate.
Knowing at the age of 5 that music was my life, by being brought up surrounded by praise music and gospel, my early exposure to music helped me to find every Instrument and style just my thing! I wanted to play everything and learn all aspects of music. I started with singing in the children's choir and then developed into piano and music theory. At the age of 12 I began to learn classical guitar, and at 15 took on various styles like Flamenco, Jazz and Rock. I graduated from High School having played in the school band achieving recognition In national Institutions Like IAJE (International Association for Jazz Education) and state band finals. I was also composing from a very early age, and at 18 released my first album (self-titled) which can still be heard and purchased today through various music outlets, since i have released over 15
albums with various ensembles and bands. In college I already knew from my previous experience that I wanted to teach and pass on the joy that music brought to my life. I studied Music Theory and Jazz and finished my degree in Music Education. I have been teaching all in all for about 14 yrs. And I have enjoyed every minute I have spent with my students learning as much from them, as them from me. I am looking forward to meeting new and eager students who really want to bring their inner music out to share with the rest of us music aficionados! and develop their skills to the peak of their abilities.
*** Lesson Details *** My teaching method ranges depending on the student. I believe in my experience that everyone learns differently, therefore everyone develops at their own pace. I try to find key strengths in each student and expose this to their advantage, using their abilities to further develop their skills, this method has shown the most promising results and students usually find themselves playing and performing just a couple of months after their first lessons. Part of my method involves a lot of performance and recital opportunities to help break any fears and inhibitions a student may bring with them. Music is about sharing, so an early exposure to this method helps to strengthen and stabilize a core acceptance of a students style and path, giving them and those close to them a very clear picture of their development and achievements.

As a casual listener or an obsessive music elitist, there are times in our lives when we get blown away by a sound so unique our entire body vibrates and resonates with the touch of something out of this world. I can honestly say when this happens to me I feel as close to a spiritual connection than anything I have experienced otherwise. I believe it is these exact events that have triggered my need to be completely involved in the making, performing and consuming of music. The creative process, to me, is the single obvious reason we exist in this world. We create and share, learn and interpret, build on previous ideas and inspire others to perfect upon this process. It is no doubt a very humbling experience to realize you are part of it all. During this process you come to realize how important you are as an Individual, how there is no other vessel like you in this world, nor has there ever been or ever will. You are here now and your voice, your talent, your gift is an instrument to the great choir of the human spirit. No one but you can relate this, a reason to be, to create, to give.
I'm a cellist and educator who has taught students of all ages and abilities. I strive to enable my students to find their own style and voice on the instrument. During the past six years my students have applied their skills in orchestras, recitals, and bands. My lesson plans include technical development, various repertoire including Suzuki, and exploration of personal musical interests and songwriting. Cello is my passion and I want to share that with you!
Kristen is an accomplished cellist and music educator who has been teaching private lessons since 2009. She has helped her students develop technique, confidence in playing, note reading, orchestral and improvisational skills.
Kristen received her training at the Boston Conservatory, earning a Bachelor of Music in String Performance (2008) and a Masters of Music in Music Education (2010.) Her teaching style can be described as kind, patient, and knowledgable, with the ability to help push her students to new heights through finding their own musical voice through the instrument.
Kristen is also an experienced performing musician. She has toured nationally and internationally, and her cello playing with the band Gem Club can be heard on NPR's "All Songs Considered" and "Tiny Desk Concerts." You can hear her on the soundtrack to ABC'
s "Private Practice" and "Revenge", as well as NBC's "Parenthood".

Therefore, I am very open to having students explore music outside the classical canon in addition to experimenting with improvisation and composition. An additional component of my teaching style is finding unique and interesting ways to keep students motivated and teaching them how to effectively practice and learn on their own.

One of the greatest things about

I have been playing string instruments for over 33 years and teach out of my string Professors book which not all teachers have that unique experience.
I am a woodwind specialist with my primary instrument being the clarinet. But, I also teach beginning to intermediate strings, piano, and percussion. I also have experience with teaching and tutoring reading, Spanish, and Math because of my minor in Spanish and my MBA in Finance.

I have taught private cello as well as public school orchestra (elementary - high school) for many years. My approach is traditional with Suzuki materials and philosophy. In each lesson I cover basic fundamentals of cello playing, solo repertoire, ensemble playing, rhythm and theory. With a fun and enthusiastic approach, we will make a lot of progress in a short amount of time.
Susan was born in California to a musical and artistic family. Susan studied with Margaret Rowell in Berkeley, California. In 1960, Susan was the winner of The International String Congress Competition and traveled to San German, Puerto Rico to study with Theodore Salzman. After graduating from Washington State University, Susan taught music, art and K-12 in various subjects in California, Wyoming and Utah, where she was married and raised two cello playing daughters.
Susan attended workshops with Dr. Suzuki and taught at many summer workshops. She worked at Kamimoto String Instruments in San Jose, California for 10 years and taught string orchestra in Moab and South Jordan, Utah while maintaining a cello and folk guitar studio. Some of her past honors include: Teacher of the Year, Moab, Utah, 1994, Utah State Legislature –Distinguis
hed Service in Education Award, 1993 and Outstanding Middle School Teacher- Utah Rural Schools, 1990.

Taking cello lessons from Susan has been a wonderful experience for my child, and it has been lovely for me to associate with her. Susan has passion, warmth, and many years of experience. Initially, it can be a bit overwhelming (especially as a parent with little musical experience) to take in all that Susan will throw at you, but soon you will see the benefits of her broad range of knowledge and the holistic education she offers. She covers the many facets of playing cello, including rhythm, reading music, theory, group practices, careful attention to bow hold, tone production, performance, ensemble playing and listening. She is consistent and reliable. My child looks forward to Susan’s lessons each week and has commented, “Susan always finds something good, then gives me ideas on how to make it better.” She puts a lot of time, resources, and creativity into enriching activities that motivate kids to stay engaged and practice regularly. As a violist and string enthusiast, my appreciation and knowledge of the cello runs fairly deep. I had studied and taught myself how to play the cello with the guidance of a professional cellist some many years ago, but I've always been eager to teach the cello to any willing student with a deep appreciation. Students can expect a curriculum catered to their needs and desires, whether they be to on the road to a professional musician or just the hobbyist and a teacher who is dedicated to their educational growth and desires.
I am currently a junior at Ramapo College studying music education but I am no foreigner to teaching. I have been teaching for some years now with general ages ranging between 3 to 25, in the violin, viola and cello. I have also taught music theory from a beginner's standpoint to a college sophomore level in conjunction with teaching said instruments. I have a passion for teaching that I love to give my students the passion of learning as teaching is not only fun, but also one of the most rewarding experiences in life as is having the guidance and educational support of a good teacher. Ashley was very helpful to me. I was floundering. I am a brand new 'musician', still learning to read music. I would still be working with her, but I had to move suddenly. She was very encouraging and I hope to be able to continue lessons again with someone in my new location.
