I'm glad I found Paul on takelessons.com. I was looking for someone to help me take my decent but untrained voice to the next level. Paul is committed to helping me advance toward my goal of being a singer-songwriter. In addition to the exercises we work on to strengthen my voice and gain control, he has given me some strategies to track my progress and improve more quickly. He also encourages me to take risks and go out and sing karaoke. He is caring and authentic and genuinely invested in my growth, and I am becoming a better musician because of it. Thank you, Paul!!

Kay is very knowledgeable, kind and accommodating. She is very encouraging and never makes me feel dumb when I hit a sour note. (As a beginning beginner, that happens a lot!) I am amazed at how much I have learned in such a short time!

My philosophy on teaching revolves around the idea that on the foundation of instrumental technique and functional ear training, all other facets of music are made easier.
Developing instrumental technique teaches the student how to assess and target their weaknesses. This is necessary to make the process efficient. I work with students to create a plan so that they can develop quickly while practicing a reasonable amount. I know their lives are busy enough.
Functional ear training is a skill that not only makes playing music easier, but it also makes listening to music more enjoyable! This is a skill the student keeps for the rest of their lives, regardless of whether or not they continue to play their instrument as an adult.
For jazz music specifically, if the student wants to go down that road, I find it imperative to make sure the history of the music goes hand in hand with the craft of the music. The study of history gives greater context to the music we listen to, which ...

Dr. Wen was the best professor and lesson instructor I have ever had. I took lessons with him for over seven years starting in high school and throughout my entire college. He shares his expertise in music theory, techniques, and instrument mechanics. He really helped me gain confidence in my playing abilities, showed me how I should be practicing in order to get the most of each rehearsal, and taught me so much about myself as a player. His ability to instruct on every aspect of playing the instrument is something I really admire. Need help rhythmically? He will help you understand time, measurement, and notes. Need help technically? He has all the ways to practice to get that much closer to perfection and how to maintain it. Need help with scales? He will help you to truly understand the scale in order for you to play it better. Not only will he help with the "how-tos," he will explain the why. Needing help with breathing techniques or articulations? He will take you through exercises that will enhance every aspect of your playing. He sets the standards high, and helps you reach your goals. I will always recommend Dr. Wen!
Valerie
Dr. Wen is an outstanding saxophone instructor, performer, and technician! I learned more from him in my first two 30 minute lessons than I had in 15 years of playing.
He will teach you how to make your practice time more productive, alternate fingerings to play more in tune, techniques to make note transitions easier, how to prepare new reeds for playing.... and on and on.
I had not played for a very long time. Dr Wen got me from there to where I was playing in a University Wind Ensemble, a quartet, and a community band. He also knew exactly where my saxophone needed to be adjusted to make it play better.
Dr Wen was my instructor for approximately 7 years. I learned a tremendous amount from him. You can’t do any better than Dr Andy Wen. He’s outstanding!
Suzy
Excellent instructor. Highly knowledgeable in music theory and the mechanics of the instrument. I took lessons from Andy for many years. He always kept it challenging - never boring, pushed me to do more than i thought I could. Well worth the money. Can't go wrong with this one!

Dr Kimberly is an absolutely fantastic instructor. My son was brand new to the saxaphone and she was incredibly patient and encouraging. One of the things we really loved was her trying to find theme songs to my sons favorite TV shows so he would have something familiar and fun to play.

I cannot share any details because I was working during this freaking pandemic while my child was taking this lesson so I have no idea how it went, but my child seemed happy, is enthusiastic about the clarinet, and said his teacher was nice, so five stars from me!

He is a well trained musician with a lot of patience, which for our lessons went a long way. He is quick to help you find the right correction to technique, and will always cater to your personal needs. His lessons work well even online, as he is able to succinctly verbalize what and how something to be worked on. I highly recommend him as a teacher!

Carl Gardner is an A1 bassoonist. Over the past year and few months he’s improved everything about my playing, technically and musically, and helped me achieve goals I previously thought were impossible. His reeds are immaculate! 5/5 stars would recommend him to any bassoonist I meet.

Social distancing will not interfere with solo competition! Carl made certain that my daughter did not miss a lesson by proactively finding a way to have one online. Although she prefers to be taught in person, this has definitely allayed her fears of not having her solo polished and ready for competition!

"I have been playing the saxophone for 26 years. After 15 years of lessons with other teachers I became a student of Rick's and have stayed with Rick ever since. I had been taking lessons from tremendous players - all of them pro's in the Los Angeles area - but in those 15 years none of them were able to have an impact on my playing like Rick. Through Rick's structured and organized "program", I learned to play the contemporary jazz and pop music that I first drew me to the saxophone - both melodies and solos!
For the first 8 years I took lessons out of Rick's house. I have since moved to Florida and have been taking lessons with Rick online for the past 2 years. What's incredible about Rick's plan is that his online instruction is equally as effective as taking classes in his house and my playing continues to improve at a rapid pace. I would strongly encourage anyone who is serious about learning to play hip, soulful and groovin' music to get in touch Rick and get started on his plan. My one regret is not starting with Rick sooner!"

Choosing a Neck Strap | How to Play Saxophone Tips

Learning how to play saxophone starts with the right equipment--namely, a quality neck strap! Read on for some helpful advice from Brookings, SD teacher Carl S...    The saxophone is a unique instrument for many reasons. One example is that the saxophone is the only band instrument that uses a neck strap. Unfortunately, the neck strap is often the most overlooked aspect of playing the instrument.
