Learn how your ear will help you to improve your music skills.

* learn how to tune your instrument using your ear
* how to pick notes, chords, and parts from your favorite songs
* sing notes by just hearing them
* identify major, minor, diminished, augmented, chords by ear
* learn all about intervals and how to hear them (Major 3rd etc)
* learn how to identify different scales and how to play them over a chord progression.
* learn instruments by ear which expands your hearing. (guitar, trumpet, piano, etc)

Ear training is fun and shows you how easy music can be once you hear it for yourself. When you hear an interval and answer, "a minor 3rd"...you will be amazed at what you can do and hear.

This was my first experience with on line teaching and it was great. I had tried reading the books and watching some videos on You Tube and was not making progress. Just a few minutes with Paul and what I couldn't figure out suddenly made sense.

Looking forward to next week.

My son loves his lessons, he gets really nervous prior because he always wants to get it right however, he likes the fact he’s at home and no one is watching him as he’s learning! As his parents we like that as a military family that will be moving again this is something that we can keep normal for him since it’s done online as well! Paul Neatherly is wonderful with him as well and very patient! I recommend this service and Paul to anyone looking for this type of learning!

Extremely knowledgeable. Pays attention to detail and he makes it easy for me to understand. I’m looking forward to my future lessons!

Originally employed and still used in serious study of music. Especially composition but also performance, this art improves the condition of both ability in music and health in life.

Can perfect pitch be developed? Many will tell you that it can, but the truth is that it can be improved, approached and at times even lost after you have it. So much of our hearing depends on the stress levels in our lives. Tension diminishes our powers and our health and a self aware, relaxed state of mind opens our hearts and our ears. I teach you how to listen and hear as well as how to absorb what you hear into the deep understanding of sound, music and emotion. My background as an internationally known and active performer, teacher, composer and educator as well as naturally being gifted with the rare quality of perfect pitch allows as an opportunity to bring you beyond your goals and into a place where you will hear life and its glory as never before!

I have been studying piano with Joseph for nearly five years. In that time, I’ve learned more about the piano and musical interpretation than I ever thought possible.

Joseph’s technical ‘short cuts’ are amazing! He illustrates ways for your hands and your mind to work that are tailor made for you. Learning from him is so fun it seems almost effortless.

The way Joseph teaches allows you to develop at your own pace. The atmosphere is always relaxed yet everything moves along quickly.

At the open classes I attend, his other students are progressing very rapidly too. After each class, we share our impressions. The mood is elated because it feels like we stepped back in time and into history.

Joseph often quotes inspired wisdom of his historic teachers in our lessons. He is a great inspiration on his own with great musical insights.

I’m playing Beethoven and Chopin works I never thought I could approach at this stage of study, with great depth of understanding. I now play with greater passion and skill, get compliments from everyone I play for, and no longer worry about playing in public.

I look forward to each and every lesson with Joseph. His encouragement and support makes learning so rewarding! Anyone who finds this musical treasure is a lucky person and I cannot recommend him highly enough.

Joseph shared his composition at the bedside of a dying man. Everyone listened and stopped crying for a moment. We were transported from the terrible tragedy into his world of beautiful music. His compassion and sensitivity of spirit touched us. When he teaches this gift to others, the world becomes a better place.
Egmont
A great teacher and an amazing pianist! This was an experience of a lifetime for me. I have studied for many years but have never met anyone who can explain and demonstrate with such depth and clarity. In one lesson I learned more than I have in the past year! I am so grateful and would recommend this masterful teacher to everyone.

Many people want to be able to play their musical instrument by ear training. An important part of ear training is learning the intervals (musical distance) between notes you hear. This is something that got touched on when I was a music major in school & college. I taught myself intervals related to common songs I've heard. By applying this knowledge to the guitar, my fingers will automatically go to the right notes I am "hearing in my head" without really thinking about it...it bypasses my intellect. This can really help decide which position to play a certain musical phrase on a guitar, for example.

On an intermediate level, I can train your ear to tell the difference between major chords, minor chords & more complex chords. I can show you how to find the first note or chord of a song. Then you can learn how to tell what the next chords are in a song, based on its relationship with the first chord.
Also whether your instrument is in tune with other instruments or ...

Been working with Mark for 2 years now - electric and acoustic; it's time I share just how much learning and fun is going on! Some lessons we pick apart songs to understand how/why they work. Some lessons are thematic - modes, signature changes, turnarounds, etc. Crazy impressive guitar skills, explains theory and conjures up relevant examples, very adaptable, and extremely patient. My friends say it's made a huge difference in my playing!

I explain that having a 'good ear' can actually be taught. There are certain musical sounds which follow predictable patterns. If these patterns can be learned and internalized, then you will have a good ear.

About Chris

My name is Chris B. and I've been playing music for most of my life. The best lesson that I've personally learned is that a musician is never done learning. Once you start believing that you know everything there is to know about your instrument then you've stopped growing musically. Personall

I am a recently retired full-time professor from Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA. , where I taught for 27 years.
I taught all 4 levels of core ear training, in addition to a great course called "Performance Ear Training for Voice" (levels 1&2). I continue to teach for Berklee Online.

I also was active as part of the Audition and Interview team for Berklee, auditioning hundreds of students at home and abroad, for admission to the college.

My students have always appreciated my expertise, patience, and enthusiasm for teaching.

Gaye is one of the best instructors that I have ever had! She starts with where you are as a learner, and presents material in ways that really stick. Gaye will make you work, but you'll come away a much better musician, having solidified a foundation to truly build on!
Julia
Gaye is an incredible teacher! Her online ear training course was engaging, interactive, well-organized, and highly effective. I tend to learn better in a live classroom environment, and so I was tentative about online coursework. However, Gaye creates an online classroom that is so versatile and engaging I never missed the "live classroom" aspect. She truly brings the online platform to life and makes wonderful use of the tools the online format can afford. Her lessons are accessible to every kind of learners. She had us singing, playing, listening, recognizing, and notating in every lesson. She holds her students to high standards and helped us to reach our goals. She gives in-depth, individualized feedback that made learning feel more one-on-one than most live classrooms could feel. Her lessons are well-organized, and build on each other in a very logical arch. Before long, she had us singing and notating things I never thought I could do! I hope to take as many classes with Gaye as I can.
Elena
Gaye is a fantastic teacher - she knows so much about ear training, the different methods and techniques, common difficulties, how to best approach whatever area you may be struggling with… To be honest, when I first started ear training, it felt like this big, insurmountable, anxiety-inducing obstacle. But now, with all the helpful tips, tricks, and techniques she taught me, everything feels much more doable, and I now have a lot more confidence in my ear training capabilities.

I still remember his Ear Training lessons from 8 years ago, which was how I met him. He opened up my perception to music in ways I didn't know existed. To this day I continue to learn from him and I will forever be grateful to him.

He is one of the kindest people I have met and genuinely cares for his students growth."

"Rachel is an extremely wonderful teacher and vocalist. I mainly sing Musical Theatre but have a background in Classical. When I feel like I'm beginning to develop unhealthy singing habits, I usually go back to my classical roots. So finding a teacher with experience in both Musical Theatre and Classical voice is extremely important to me. Rachel really focuses on the technique and finds a way to describe it and apply it in terms her students understand. I highly recommend her whether you have a background Musical Theatre, Classical, both, or more. She'll get you singing with a healthy voice in no time!"
