I teach beginner cello primarily using the Suzuki books, but supplement with other materials when needed. My students work on scales and rhythm constantly to improve their tone and musicality as well as technique. I teach classical, religious, fiddle, and more. I also teach group ensembles, trios, quartets, and I work with students on their school orchestral and audition pieces.
My name is Erin. I am a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. I have a Bachelor of Arts in Music, with a concentration in Violin. I began studying violin at the age of six. I have performed with small chamber ensembles, orchestras, quartets, and trios. I enjoy playing for churches and weddings, and love teaching.
I began teaching beginner to advanced Violin and Viola in April of 2001 in NC. I moved to California in the fall of 2008. Since moving to California I have extended my teaching to beginner Piano and Cello also. I have taught students ages 3 to 87 how to play and enjoy music on a personal level. My experience includes leading sectionals for middle school orchestra, organizing and instructing small ensembles, and organizing student recitals. Student recitals I arranged once or twice a year to showcase the
students' growth and abilities, and to provide an opportunity to give back to family and friends whose sacrifices and support enable the students to succeed.
I teach because I love music and I believe God has given me a gift. Playing and teaching help me to use my talent for His glory. I love working with people and I love how music enables people of all ages to open up and express themselves in a positive way, no matter what life throws their way. I believe music teaches discipline, builds self esteem; helps set and achieve goals; and positively affects and enhances other curricular endeavors.
My teaching philosophy is to always have fun while learning, to set attainable goals for the student, to learn through encouragement and discipline, and to help students come to love music on a personal level. I focus on the character of each student and their goals and desires to see that the student and/or parents are satisfied. Teaching is a privilege for me that I do not take for granted.
*** Lesson Details *** I offer half hour, forty-five minute, sixty minute lessons, or longer on a weekly basis, but I do Not offer bi-weekly lessons. My lessons begin with the fundamentals of music. I believe a firm foundation in rhythm and reading is important because a student may switch musical instruments one day and the basics are universal and necessary. I have a deep love and appreciation for music which I hope to instill in my students as well. I am strict in the sense that I like students to polish their pieces before moving on. I like to keep them focused on playing well, not just playing.
A typical lesson will begin with scales to warm up, a review of the previous week's material, and a new assignment. Students will memorize pieces, be proficient in scales and rhythms, and all the while laughing and having a great time. I am known with my students for my creative analogies and flexibility to try new things in order to adapt to the students strengths and weaknesses. My students look forward to coming to their lesson, and that is very rewarding as a teacher.
I primarily use the Suzuki method for Violin and Viola, because it offers progressive steps to mastering technique, style, and musicality. My curriculum includes the use of Winning Rhythms, Wohlfahrt studies, All for Strings Theory, Essentials for Strings, and many more beginner and advanced studies; including shifting and double stops.

After graduating from the Juilliard School of Music I played with the New Jersey Symphony for 3 years and then moved to Switzerland where I was Principal cellist with the Beil Orchestra. I have spent 30 years teaching cello with good success. I enjoying helping students getting better. I teach the rudiments of the bow arm, bow grip and how to change the direction of the bow.
I graduated from Juilliard (BA) and played 3 years with the New Jersey Symphony after which I moved to Europe where I was Principal cellist with a Swiss Orchestra ( Biel ). I teach the Leonard Rose bow arm technique. I believe he had the best bow arm in the business.
I work with the bow arm first with beginners and advanced players to get a better bow grip, bow stroke and bow change. The rudiments are important!
I strive to treat each student equally no matter how advance the student are. My job as a teacher is to provide students a tool in life. Students will learn the way life works through the art of music. Should the students decide to pursue music or not in the future, I only hope that students will apply what they've learned in music to their everyday problem solving.
Johnny received his Bachelors of Music at the University of Alabama, under the tutelage of Carlton McCreery, and a Masters of Music at The Boston Conservatory with Andrew Mark. Johnny made his debut performance in 2011, performing Dvorak's Cello Concerto with Albuquerque Youth Symphony under the direction of Gabriel Gordon. Since then, Johnny had many opportunities to work with members of the Russian National Orchestra, Berliner Philharmoniker, and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. He was also a fellow of National Repertory Orchestra in Breckenridge, CO.
Johnny is experienced in teaching cello. His lessons are always passionate, musical, and informative. There are several aspects of his lessons that I'd like to share.
1. Full of Content: He delivers enough details of a new technique with simplification for an easy understanding.
2. Learning Curve: By breaking down and reorganizing the knowledge, he teaches new concepts step by step, from approachable actions to efficient actions.
3. Customization: He helps you find out a suitable solution to grow on the techniques based on your own physical and cognitive characteristics.
4. Experimentation: The correct ways he suggests you do is demonstrated by experimenting with different ways for comparison, which you would not only know what to do but know the reason behind it.
Cello is a beautiful yet complicated instrument. To enjoy it, a great mentorship is necessary and truly valued.

Hello, my name is Carly. I'm currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in music education at the University of Louisville. Throughout the past couple of semesters I've been learning many different methods for teaching, privately and publicly. I have 6 students of my own, and would love to expand my studio and take in more cellists. I've been playing cello about 10 years and love to share my passion with others. I was so happy to see the detail Carly went into teaching me the cello. She made a very comfortable environment to learn. I felt like she was interested in seeing me succeed!

After playing the violin for over 20 years, Lisa was inspired to share the gift of music with others by her teacher, Susanna Sonnenberg. Lisa has attended the 2017 and 2018 American String Teachers Association National Conferences. She currently performs with the Edgewood Symphony Orchestra, the Pittsburgh Philharmonic, the Pittsburgh Civic Orchestra, and with outreach quartets. Lisa has played in recitals, the Chartiers Valley High School Orchestra, and was accepted to the 2006 PMEA District Orchestra. She has studied with Larry Weiss, Linda Andersen, and others. Lisa can’t remember a time before she learned how to play the violin; it has brought her great joy. Her favorite pieces to play are the Bach Double Concerto in D Minor and The Lark Ascending.
At 8 years old, Lisa fell in love with the violin. Throughout school, she studied w
ith private teachers and played with the school orchestra. At home, her dogs were a great audience.
Lisa went on to study history at the University of Pittsburgh, and later earned her law degree from Duquesne. She never forgot her violin, though, and continued to play in her spare time.
Music adds beauty to the world, and finally, after years of keeping the violin to herself, Lisa decided to share her playing with others. Lisa teaches traditional, classical method. The method books she uses include: Essential Elements for Strings, Samuel Applebaum, and All for Strings, among others. She supplements the technical exercises with repertoire from the Suzuki series. Lisa enjoys playing all types of music, in addition to classical, and teaches these songs, as well. Additional music includes pop artists like Taylor Swift, classic rock, electronic music like Lindsey Stirling, celtic, folk, and just about any other type of music you can think of. As a teacher, Lisa strives to be positive and encouraging. She believes that music should be fun, so her main goal is to make sure her students are having a good time!
I think Lisa is a wonderful instructor who provides clear instruction and also knows pedagogy. She starts with a step-by-step approach to build a foundation. I am an older adult and her warmth and good sense of humor help, too.

I'm a committed educator who's been teaching cello for twenty years, and enjoy working with students of all levels and ages to help
them fulfill their musical goals and dreams. I teach at SDSU, Villa Musica as well as privately and online. I regularly coach individuals and groups of pre-college students at the Hausmann Chamber Music Program (at SDSU's Community Music School), adults as part of the Hausmann Quartet's Living Room Program of community chamber music, and coordinate and teach at Art of Elan’s Young Artists in Harmony program.
My varied interests have led to collaborations with dance companies, recordings for film, television and commercials, early music work and performances throughout Mexico. Locally, I'm a founding member of San Diego Baroque, a mainstay on the Art of Élan series, an affiliated artist with San Diego New Music and appear regularly with Bach Collegium San Diego. I have degrees from the Eastman School of Music (BM) and CUNY Queens College (MA). My teachers have included Steven Doane, Marcy Rosen, Ross Harbaugh, Joseph Elworthy and Andre Emelianoff. I live in North Park.
My 16 year old daughter has been taking lessons from Alex for two years. He's a very accomplished cellist with a strong background in all areas of playing the cello. He has been very patient with my daughter. He makes the lessons fun. Her skill level has steadily improved and can be directly attributed to lessons with Alex.
