I am actually a speech therapist. With 20 years since graduation under my belt, I am a pretty experienced therapist. My experience includes hours upon hours of children and adults. My reason for going with Take Lessons is that there are some people who want to learn conversational Japanese but don't qualify for "therapy" per se, because they do not live in an environment where Japanese is regularly spoken.

I am a native speaker, and I am fluent in English. I received all of my professional training in English. Might I say I function well in both languages, speaking, reading and writing. My desired focus is accent modification, targeting intermediate and advanced non-native speakers to bring their speech closer to native speech.

I am from Yokohama area. My Japanese can reflect mild regional flavor, but generally smack within standard Japanese.

About Chie

With the recent surge in popularity with all things to do with Japan, speaking the language like a native is an enviable skill. Many an excellent teachers abound, but I think my unique set of skills may offer an edge to those who want to learn to sound closer to a native speaker. I am a certified Sp

What a GEM! Patient and knows his stuff. So much fun learning Japanese. Can't wait for next class. Punctual and great communication! Finally found what I was looking for. Thank you again.

My 12 year old son takes Japanese with Toshi weekly for an hour. He has enjoyed the lessons from day one. Toshi is a gifted teacher, and my son appreciates quick breaks during the lesson (it keeps him engaged for longer). My son says Toshi is a nice balance of serious and fun, and he also says what a great teacher he is. Toshi is supportive, encouraging and fun. What more could you ask for?!

Hi, I'm Chieko. I'm Japanese and living in California and go back and forth between here and Tokyo. So I know the trend of Japan well. Furthermore, I have long working experience as manager in some major international companies in Japan. So I can help you communicate with Japanese workers using natural and effective language in Business Japanese. I know the business custom is very different among countries and Japanese one is a little complicated.. So, if you'd like to communicate with Japanese smoothly, please ask me what to do in a situation you encounter.
I have successfully passed the Japanese Language Teaching Competency Test authorized by the Society for Teaching Japanese as a Foreign Language in October 2016.

About Chieko

I am a native Japanese speaker. I'm now living in the USA but also in Japan and go back and forth here and Tokyo. So I know the Japanese trend well from comics to businesses. I have long working experience as engineering manager at some major international companies in japan. I know it is difficult

My son (15) has been taking lessons with Chieko-san for 2 years now. He has learned a great deal from her (it seems more than I leaned in my 3 years in HS and college). She sends me regular progress reports and was even willing to learn about the American grading system, make his studies more engaging with homework, and grade him so we could count it for HS credit (we homeschool). She is all around amazing!

During my undergraduate studies, I worked as a president of SUNY Albany Japanese Student Association and also worked as a TA for Japanese 101 classes, and I absolutely love to teach languages! I understand it is often very hard to find a language tutor outside of the spoken community, and I hope to provide you with the opportunity to be exposed to authentic media sources to acquire natural fluency. Hope to hear from you soon!

About Hikaru

γ―γ˜γ‚γΎγ—γ¦ & thank you for taking a moment to check out my profile! I'm originally from Tokyo Japan, and I moved to NY with my family during high school. I've completed Master's degrees in Language Education & Communication, and Bachelor's Degrees in Music Performance and Political Science.

I just had my second lesson with Hikaru and I ask so many questions all the time and am just a lot as a person, but she's so patient and is really willing to answer all of my questions and go over absolutely whatever. She's also very good at explaining things and can explain the grammar side to me (I'm a big grammar proponent), which is an absolute blessing. Lessons fly by and I absolutely cannot wait for my next one.

Also, she's been helping me find resources that I can use to work on my Japanese outside of lessons. I know that some people won't do that because they want you to buy more lessons, but Hikaru genuinely just wants to help me learn both the language and the culture.
Micah
Great instructor. Patient and willing you work with you.

After one class I’m so excited for more. Hikaru started off by explaining the very very basics and was incredibly knowledgeable whenever I asked questions. I look forward to my next class.

"When I went to Japan, I had very little Japanese experience and when I returned, I really wanted to learn more. Oyamada-sensei has helped me learn more than I could have ever known in the short period of time I've been learning from him. He is a wonderful teacher who wants the best for you, is extremely accomodating to your needs, and very welcoming. If you are susceptible, please give Oyamada-sensei a try, I am sure he will not disappoint."

"Excellent Native Japanese Teacher!
Yoshi sensei does a great job teaching the fundamentals of the Japanese language For those who are new to or relearning (like me) Japanese, his teaching style and focus is perfect. He teaches well rounded lessons; covering written, spoken, and reading aspects through Kanji, Katakana, and hiragana. On a personal level, he is friendly, patient, fun, kind person. In addition, I have learned so many new things like Japanese Calligraphy, Japanese tea ceremony, Origami, Japanese traditional healthy meals, Japanese culture, etiquettes, manners, I highly recommend him as a tutor."

"Really enjoying our lessons so far! Hikaru is very flexible, which has really worked out well for me. Since I live in Japan our schedules are very different, but we've been able to make it work nonetheless. She always has lesson plans put together and sends you the PDF's before each lesson. If you are curious about things not in the lesson plan, she's always happy to explore that with you as well. Most importantly, she makes you feel comfortable while you are trying to read and speak Japanese. Thank you, Hikaru!"
