Heather W.

Abingdon, MD

Profile
I've been teaching piano for over 13 years. I use Alfred's Premier Piano Courses levels 1 - 6 for children. For adults I use Alfred's Lesson Book 1 - 3. My teaching goals for all my students are to enable them to read and make music so that they could experience the joy of journeying in the realm of musical sounds.
My philosophy in teaching piano is very much like learning to drive a car. Once a person learns the mechanism of driving so many possibilities open for the person to enjoy trips to many places that bring pleasures that destiny could offer. In some ways, playing the piano is very much like learning to drive a car. Once the mechanism of making music is mastered, the possibilities of making journeys of musical sound is endless.

About Heather

Hi, I'm Heather. I’m from a small town in Harford County, MD, called Abingdon. It’s really close to Baltimore, MD which is about 15 minutes away from Abingdon. I live with my husband and two bunnies. I’m an R.N. with a bachelors degree in Nursing and 16 years of training in music by masters of Curtis Institute, Julliard, and Peabody Conservatory. I have been teaching piano for over 12 years. In 2001, I had a diversion of career from nursing and I absolutely fell in love with the idea of teaching piano and I started giving piano lessons. I love playing my Masan & Hamlin grand piano
for personal pleasure, and I spend a lot of time practicing for different occasions. I h’ve played in over twenty piano recitals, and for numerous other occasions such as in Weddings , Funerals and in Choir accompaniments.
On a different note, did you know that children who study a musical instrument learn responsibility and discipline, they gain pride in their accomplishments which in turn makes them confident, they learn to think in a logical manner, and they will perform better in school. These are just a few of the benefits children could gain through music lessons

My Specialties: My passion is classical music, however, I realize that the students'€™ interests are diverse, so, I teach pieces they request which include easy fun Pop Music, Hymns, Boogie, Rock, Country and other contemporary pieces.
My Education: At an early age, I took a great interest in music, so my older sister who is four years older than I taught me what she learned in her piano lessons. She also taught me music theory. At the age of 12-14 my parents sent me to private piano lessons. My piano teacher at that time eventually told me that I needed to find a new teacher because she had taught me all she knew. After that, I approached a well known Julliard Master in town. He took me on as a student after he heard me play the Beethoven'€™s Pathetique Sonata in C minor. I learned through Arthur Fiddler'€™s comment made in the newspaper that Mr. Chang, my teacher, in his opinion was the best piano teacher in Hawaii. Under Mr. Chang’s tutelage, I was exposed to a variety of classical pieces written by famous composers of the 15th to 18th centuries. At the age of 14, I made my first piano recital debut. My piano teacher was impressed with my talent and expressed his wish for me to pursue music and enter into Julliard. But, my parents being immigrants from Korea, did not think it was a good choice of career. So, I went into nursing instead, much to the consternation of my piano teacher. In 2001, I made a career change and found my passion for music revived again. I started teaching piano as well as taking Music Theory courses at a community college and taking lessons from a Julliard- Peabody master as well lessons from a Curtis Institute master. I continue taking piano lesson even now while I give piano lessons to beginner and intermediate students.

*** Lesson Details ***
In my piano studio, besides just learning to actually play the piano, students will engage in flashcard drills, writing work, and other activities to strengthen their overall knowledge of music. This will prepare them well for continued study in piano, for playing other instruments or singing, and for enjoying music in general. As an incentive to practice, our studio awards each week piano dollars for the time each student practices during the week. At the end of the year, we have an auction that the children could participate in using their piano dollars to purchase items.

In first the lesson the concepts stressed include:
1. Hand position and posture at the piano.
2. Right hand , left hand, and how the fingers are numbered.
3. Direction on the keyboard
4. The pattern of keys on the key board

In the first year of piano study, the concepts covered are:
1. Theory: identify steps, skips, and repeats; write and recognize 2nd -5ths intervals; sharp and flat signs; identify key signatures
2. Rhythms: whole notes, half notes, quarter notes, eighth notes, and dotted notes.
3. Technique: correct hand position; curved fingers, down –up wrist for phrasing, legato/staccato touch, penta scales; major chords and voicing (balance of hands) 5-finger melodies; single line melodies divided between hands; note-against-note playing, some melody/chord playing.
4. Repertoire: A Dozen A Day by Edna-Mae Burmae Books; Five-finger melodies by Faber Faber; Famous & Fun Pop Books by Carol Matz ; Boogie, Rock & Country Level 1 by James Bastien; Alfred’s Basic Adult Piano Course Lesson Book Level One for adult beginners.

In addition to lessons each student is required to participate in an annual piano recital to give them experience and confidence in performance.

*** Studio Equipment ***

Heather is the very best of the three piano teachers I have had! I have made more progress in the last year with Heather as my teacher than I had in the two previous years with other teachers. Although I am an older student and take longer to learn, she has been patient and supportive. She never makes me feel incompetent, in fact, she is extremely complimentary of my efforts. Her positive attitude makes me want to work harder and to play better. And she is such a nice person to be around - gentle, polite, and friendly. I am having a great experience and highly recommend her for anyone who is learning to play or to improve their playing.

Taryn K.

Baltimore, MD

I have been teaching for over 10 years and work with all ages and skill levels. I cater my lessons to meet the individual goals and needs of the student and I strive to give students a strong musical foundation while nurturing their unique musical style and interests.
I believe that strong technique and basic musical knowledge are both important in creating well rounded musicians and am mindful to incorporate both technical skills and music theory into each of my lessons.

About Taryn

I am a University of Hawaii Piano Performance Major with a training emphasis in classical piano. I have taken multiple AMEB piano examinations, as well as performed in various recitals, culminating in an undergraduate music certification. I have been playing for 17 years, working with a variety of musical and performance styles, including individual performance, accompaniment, and musical collaboration. These experiences have given me the skills to tackle and communicate musical themes and ideas to students with a range of learning styles and needs, from beginning to advanced, classical to lei
sure.

*** Lesson Details ***
My teaching style is very dependent upon the need of the individual student. I believe that each person learns differently, and different people require unique methods of communication (visual, aural, descriptive), as well as structure of classes. In addition, I understand that students are hoping to gain different things from learning any instrument. Given this, I really try to cater to what a student wants, and how they learn best. However, I also believe that no student can learn and advance without an understanding of theory and development of technique. I generally use the Piano Adventures curriculum with my beginning students, however for intermediate and advanced students, I prefer to allow more freedom in the pieces that are learned. While studying with me, you can expect to develop technique through the study of classical music, gain an advanced understanding of music theory, and develop the ability to not only play well, but to perform well too!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Upright Yamaha piano in common area w/ seating for parents

*** Travel Equipment ***
I expect the student to provide the piano or keyboard for practicing. The students should be responsible for getting the proper music books necessary for teaching.

*** Specialties ***
The genre I am most experience with is classical music.

Taryn has done a great job teaching our 5.5 year old boy who loves music, but has lots of energy. She is patient and persistent with great teaching skills. She has been flexible with timing when we needed it. She uses the Faber and Faber My First Piano Adventure which is an excellent set of books for the pre-reader and early reader and also very affordable. We appreciate Taryn setting our son's musical foundation.

Taryn is responsive to my objectives and brings creativity to the task.

I'm a guitarist with 35 years of semi-pro and professional experience, with the ability to sub on simple keyboards parts. I chose Taryn from the available group of piano teachers because of her classical training. Her background is important because my goal is to acquire correct technique and become proficient at sightreading. Taryn understands that an adult student, especially one with previous performing experience, brings a perspective that's different from a child's, or from an adult with no previous experience. She communicates well and is appropriately flexible when required, but firm in her adherence to teaching the fundamentals that will help me accomplish my goals.

About Jean

I have been teaching piano for approximately 35 years. I've had experience with all ages and levels of students. I am also a church organist and music director and I have taught general /vocal music in the public school system for 24 years. I have had the pleasure of being an adjudicator for the Pennsylvania Piano Student Festival. I am a member of the Maryland State Teachers Association, Baltimore Music Teachers Association, Harford County Music Teachers Association, The Early Music Society of Baltimore, National Federation of Music Clubs, Bach in Baltimore Chorus and the American Guil
d of Organist.
I graduated from the College of Notre Dame University with a BA Degree in Music Education. I have continued my private studies throughout the years with notable professors. I attend piano teaching workshops on a regular basis to stay up-to-date with new teaching materials.
My students are taught a complete knowledge of music theory. The fundamentals of scales, chord structures, arpeggios etc. are an essential part of every lessons. Music technic is developed with these fundamentals. I teach a variety of music genres such as Jazz, Contemporary, Classical and Hymn playing, depending on the age and musical development of each student.

*** Lesson Details ***
I teach a 45 minute lesson but a 30 or 60 minute class is an option. In my experience, students 5 or 6 years of age, depending on their maturity level, do perform better with a 30 minute lesson. As they progress, they will move to the 45 minute lesson.
I have studied with many wonderful piano professors over the years.
Duke Thompson (Maryland Music Conservatory)
Ernest Ragogini ( Notre Dame University)
Jane Tan (Composer of teaching repertoire and teacher techniques for teaching)
Virginia Reinecke (Loyola University)
Fredrick Petrick ( Peabody Conservatory)
I cannot fail to give credit to Mrs. Marie Heck my first music instructor who inspired me with her gentle manner and her love of teaching.

*** Studio Equipment ***

Jean is a wonderful teacher. She's dedicated and patient with her students. With a great music background, Jean has given our kids (two of her students) great music & piano techniques/methodology and a way to approach music that is by far superior to that of any of the previous piano teachers. She is agile in her approach to teaching piano with the belief that not one teaching method is applicable to all kids.

I believe that anyone can play, if they want to learn. How fast you learn is up to you. The more you practice, the faster you will learn. I will teach music theory and musicality while having fun.

About Theresa

I find Theresa to be almost like a kindred spirit. Not only does she have MUCH knowledge of her artistry but, of course, shares my love for music, children, animals, crafting, sports etc. In addition, she has great patience with me which has enabled me to learn an artistry that I never really thought to be possible. I am VERY pleased with her instruction.
