*** Lesson Details ***
I teach music students want to learn. I don't use books because every student learns differently. I have a very laid back personality but I am strict when it comes to practicing and learning the material from the previous lesson. After 3-6 months students will be able to play multiple songs, have a good grasp on scales and will be at the point where they can look at joining their first band with confidence!

*** Studio Equipment ***
We have a variety of studio equipment for students to use including guitars, amps, keyboards and drums. We also have an assortment of music stands laptops and enhanced learning tools to allow the student to get the most out of their lesson!

*** Travel Equipment ***
I will provide certain items that allow students to do exercises. Metronome and a laptop are common for me. I expect the student to have access to the specific instrument they are intending to learn

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in contemporary style using classical methods

Cheryl C.

Mount Tabor, NJ

Learn to play classical guitar using efficient left and right hand technique as well as posture and guitar support in a comfortable manner that avoids stress or damage to the body.

You will learn to read and play music on the classical nylon string guitar while working toward playing the standard classical repertoire.

About Cheryl

I have been a musician for over 25 years. I have a Bachelor of Music and have taught guitar for over 10 years. In addition to guitar, I'm a vocalist, composer and arranger as well as a music publisher. I actively perform as both a classical guitarist and singer-songwriter.

I love teaching guitar and find it so exciting to see kids (and grown-ups!) learn an instrument and be part of the magic of creating music!

The earliest age that I recommend for a child to start learning to read music is age 7. Learning an instrument teaches focus, develops self-direction and how to reach a goal, plus
the added benefit of developing the brain for academic achievement. And, it's just plain FUN!!

***NOTES ABOUT SPECIAL NEEDS***

There are stairs to my home studio. Please take this into consideration if you have an ambulatory disability.

Usually, learning disabilities, ADD & ADHD go together just fine with guitar lessons and frequently give these precious young people a creative outlet. Speak to me about your child's needs so I can prepare the best lessons possible!

*** LESSON DETAILS ***

I like to empower you, the student, by making your lessons challenging enough to keep your interest, but keeping it fun and stress-free!

With regular daily practice, you will learn to read music, play melody and chords. You can learn to play finger style, use a pick or learn both! Music theory and rhythm study is included to round out your musicianship. As you become more accomplished, we can add other music skills, like ear-training, accompaniment and song-writing.

This is perfect for home schooled children or as a supplement to public or private school music programs. Children age 7 and up, properly seated with the right size guitar and under the guidance of an experienced teacher (me!) do very well. (Speak to me before purchasing your child's instrument.)

I can also prepare a high school student for college auditions (college prep) and guide adults who want to take their music skills beyond tablature.

I love to make lessons fun, relaxing and give you a sense of achievement while helping you reach your music goals!

*** STUDIO EQUIPMENT ***

Home Studio, dedicated space, guitars and recording equipment, keyboard and amps, music stands, chairs, comfortable waiting area for parents.

*** SPECIALTIES ***

I specialize in acoustic and acoustic/electric guitar - both classical and contemporary, steel string and nylon.

Like anything new - exciting, followed by frustration because it's new and takes some learning and patience.

Cheryl is patient - I know I will get the hang of it as I continue with her.

The request for a review is a bit premature as I have only had one lesson with Rina, but it's obvious she knows her stuff. In just a few minutes of observing my primitive play, she was able to help me improve and correct my technique. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute...and not one minute of the lesson was wasted.
She is focused, clear, and precise in her instruction. At the same time, she creates a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere in which to learn.

I have been taking acoustic guitar lessons with Rina for about 10 weeks. When I first started I did not know anything about the guitar, but she made it easy by getting me started on learning just one sting at a time. Now I know all of the strings and play chords and a number of tunes. She is very patient and an excellent instructor. I am very happy with my progress and I plan on continuing with guitar lessons until I can play a wide variety of music.

Mr. Tony

Lodi, NJ

Classical guitars can differ from other guitars. You tend to learn to play classical guitar differently from other guitar styles. The classical guitars six strings comprise of the bass strings which are nylon wrapped in brass wire and the treble (lower) strings made from nylon. It is a wooden bodies instrument. It includes no electronics at all.

A classical guitarist is not just a person who plays a classical repertoire. It is also very important the way he plays. A classical guitarist plucks the strings with the fingers from his right hand and doesn't use any pick. There are also some recommendations about the position of the body that make a classical guitarist different from other guitarists.

About Tony

Passionate about sharing my love of the guitar with students of all ages, I've been teaching for more than 30 years. A trained Flamenco guitarist, I found, at the tender age of 7, my passion when I heard the world-renowned Flamenco guitarist Sabicas. Studying Flamenco since then, I began, during my teens, performing professionally and have had the honor of performing with such nationally known musicians as Billy Bang (legendary fiddle player), Willy Calhoun (Living Colour), Vassar Clements Band, Tom Chapin, Stanley Jordan, Buddy Miles, and Michael Powers. In high school, I enrolled in an H
onors Musicianship class at the RiverDell, NJ, Senior High where I learned to read scores, conduct and identify multiple instruments, sight read, orchestrate scores and compose music. Following my true passion, I enrolled in the American Institute of Guitar (AIG), studying under the most sought after Flamenco guitar teacher for the past 20 years, Dennis Koster (author of Keys to Flamenco Guitar) and met the legendary Sabicas in person. At the same time, I began training in the Blues, educating myself on various styles and from various teachers, eventually going all the way to the tracks.

Tony has been teaching me for nine years and he truly believes in teaching his students not only the basics of learning the guitar but why the instrument is such a privilege to play and teaches based on the students ability. He also teaches the history and evolution of the guitar and also facts that i never knew that made me very proud to play such an instrument. He sees the potential in the student and encourages them to go beyond where they think they can go and makes it happen. Tony slowly built up motivation in me to keep exploring on my own and he planted the seed of wanting to practice to the point where playing guitar became one of the most important things in my life and i do not think another teacher could have done the same thing. I started to explore YouTube and teach myself a lot of the songs i wanted to learn starting with chords, then finger picking, then adding percussion, and finally putting all three together in many arrangements. I would never have been able to figure that out or have the motivation to if it was not for the things he taught and showed me. Now he teaches me many new techniques involving flamenco and you really cannot get all of this with someone else. Some other people I know have different teachers and i can tell by the way they talk about them and what they are learning that they do not compare to mine. I am really lucky to have ended up with someone who has such commitment and I am always super excited to keep learning what he has to teach. His knowledge is endless and it blows me away what he shows me. Tony never tries to make any of his lessons boring and he definitely has a talent not many people have. I recommend Tony, 100%.

Tony has worked as guitar accompanist for the past year and a half with our 700+ religious formation students from K-8 as well as our whole church assembly. He has played classical to contemporary Christian music with us and is fantastic. As a teacher myself, I see him as an ideal person to learn from. Tony is patient, kind, knowledgeable and tuned into kids as well as adults. You couldn't want for more in a teacher.

I strongly endorse Tony as a master pop and classical guitar teacher (as well as a dynamic, highly creative guitarist and pop/rock/folk tenor singer). I received a Master’s Degree from the Juilliard School in 1986 in voice, and he and I have worked on a weekly basis at churches and concerts since 2007. His mastery of incredibly rapid finger techniques in all major and minor scales, widely varied strum technique in so many different styles, understanding of audio production and vocal-instrumental microphone usage, as well as soulful improvised counter melodies is unmatched in my experiences. He also taught my son guitar, as well as many of my parishioners at my church, and they went on to playing frequently during church services and many other venues. His manner with children and teens is very gentle, humorous and witty, and is instantly beloved by all who meet him. Throughout my career I have rarely heard an artist who has more artistic and musical impact in concert or religious events than Mr. Tony. And the line of people wishing to meet him after concerts is so long that he does not leave events for more than 90 minutes or more. You cannot do better anywhere than having Mr. Tony as a teacher, colleague or friend.

Stefano A.

Jersey City, NJ

I have been this teaching this instrument for 3 years. I use the Aaron Shearer book as the first instruction to how to play the instrument. Then I go through Carcassi's 25 Studies and Leo Brouwer's New Studies before I teach any professional repertoire. My goal is to teach my students classical guitar technique as well as knowledge of the history and vast repertoire of the classical guitar. I believe that careful and strategic practice combines with great instruction leads to music success.

About Stefano

Stefano A. has been playing the guitar for 7 years, both electric and classical. He has studied classical style with Mr. Frasche from Passaic Valley High School in Little Falls and Chris Messina, a NJCU alumnus.A sophomore at NJCU, his current teachers are João Luiz Rezende Lopez for solo guitar and Ana Maria Rosado for ensemble. Stefano performed with the NJCU Guitar Ensemble at the 2014 College Guitar Ensemble Showcase at the Guitar Foundation of America Regional Symposium in New York City and most recently at Bayonne High School. He hopes to perfect both electric and classical guitar ski
lls and to combine these in a university level teaching career.

I have been able to learn quite a bit in a short amount of time. He's teaching techniques makes you learn properly, from the sitting position to the playing techniques.

I have personally been working with Stefano for the past two years and he is hands down one of the best guitarists and musicians I've had the pleasure of working with. He's a level headed person and easy to work with. Also incredibly patient while teaching and knowledgeable about the guitar and the way it has developed through the years with it's technique and repertoire.
