Jill G.

Roslindale, MA

About Jill

I've been in and around music all my life. I started violin at age 5, part of the first generation of Suzuki violinists in the United States. I've loved being a professional violinist and violin teacher for over 30 years! And I've also founded and directed three community music schools in Newburyport, Boston, and Manhattan.

I hold Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Violin Performance, and I'm lucky to have had wonderful experiences during my formal training! In my undergraduate years, I was awarded a full 4-year scholarship for string quartet and chamber music playing, which was invaluabl
e as a real-world training. In graduate school, I was fortunate to learn so much as a Teaching Assistant for undergraduate violin students.

I have also been an innovator in musical education, and I've felt honored to coach numerous already gifted violin teachers who have sought me out to improve their techniques for best teaching practices. From my 30+ years of private violin teaching and observing how children learn, I developed a super fun groundbreaking class in New York City for 2.5 to 5 year old beginners called Crackerjack Kidz! And a few years ago, I wrote a text to accompany young students and their families.

I continuously work to be a master teacher dedicated to the very best methods, using a variety and combination of techniques and strategies tailored to the student's musical success and enjoyment.

My specialties include music-based early childhood development, adult beginners and continuing learners, intermediate and advanced players, and chamber music coaching.

I welcome you to start your family's musical journey with me!

*** Lesson Details ***
While each lesson is different, we always try to spend a little time warming up, making sure we're comfortable and free of tension, reviewing what we've worked on, and layering in new concepts each time. We also learn age appropriate music theory (the "why's" of how music works), we exercise our imaginations, and we learn how to effectively practice.

We learn to think, solve problems, hear the music in our minds, and coordinate our bodies to play beautifully! Along the way we learn skills for life, the joy of accomplishment, and love of ourselves and others!

Whether you're a toddler or a senior, violin can always teach new things and help students appreciate more about themselves and the world!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Music room with keyboard and computer. Parents can sit it on lessons, and are enouraged to do so with young students.

*** Specialties ***
I'm a classically trained violinist and a master teacher with over 30 years of experience. I've been teaching Suzuki violin to children ages 3 and up for my whole career, and I'm also extremely comfortable with traditional methods for beginner, intermediate, and advanced students of any age.

My specialties include:
music-based early childhood development
adult beginners and continuing learners
intermediate and advanced players
chamber music coaching.

My first lesson in many many years! You may as well say I was a beginner. As an adult learner, I need a type of instruction that will leave me motivated to continue and Jill was just PERFECT. Knowledgeable, patient, she uses tricks and techniques to facilitate learning. I learned so much in just the first lesson. I am very motivated to continue and to get to a point where I can actually play!

Nat S.

Manchester, MA

About Nat

I have been involved professionally in music for over 35 years as a music teacher, performing artist, recording artist, record producer, record label owner, arranger and composer. I have written many music books and hundreds of arrangements for musicians of all levels. I have experience in virtually all styles of music. I offer private lessons to students of all ages and abilities in all styles.
My Teaching Background
My entire family is involved in the arts. My Mom is a painter and violinist in the Cape Ann Symphony, my Dad was an actor and a writer. My Uncle was under contract to Cecil B.
DeMille and appeared in several Hollywood movies with Gary Cooper and Paulette Godard. I was educated at the Berklee School of Music. I also studied privately with John Payne, Jerry Bergonzi, Houston Person, Buddy Tate, Arnett Cobb, Eddie lockjaw Davis, Eddie Cleanhead Vinson. I have recorded 10 CDs as a leader. My CD Crescent City was the #1 Record on Jazz Radio Charts coast to coast in 2002 and #35 of all jazz Records released in that year. I performed on “Good Morning America” as part of the Mardi Gras coverage. I have performed in New Orleans at Jazzfest, Satchfest, and major venues including Tipitinas, Snug Harbor, and the House of Blues and with the Neville Brothers and the Marsalis family. Also in New York City at The Village Vanguard with Buddy Tate and Scott Hamilton, Birdland with the Count Basie Band, the Lester Young Tribute Concert in NYC, and Cecil’s Jazz Club in New Jersey. I headlined at Boston’s “Steppin’ Out” concert sharing the stage with Delfeayo Marsalis, Ellis Marsalis, Tito Puente Jr. and many others, and at the Jazz Week festival in Boston sharing the stage with Max Weinberg from the "Late Nite" with Conan O'Brian Show. Primarily a saxophonist I also perform and teach Piano, Guitar, Bass, Drums, Clarinet, Flute, Trumpet, Trombone, Banjo and Mandolin.

My Teaching Philosophy
I approach teaching each student as a unique individual and try to assess what their skill levels and goals are and how I can help to take them to the next level. When I find that a student reaches a certain level I start creating unique arrangements for them that will help them grow even faster musically. I have students from age 5 to age 85 on all instruments. Along with private lessons I offer ensembles. One of my students performs professionally with me on trumpet. He is now 18 and has been studying with me since the second grade. Another of my students started two years ago at age 56 on Bass Guitar and then Bass Violin. He now performs regularly with me as well. One of my students is 10 years old. His mother and father are from Brazil. He has been studying with me for 5 years. He began on piano and added the trumpet about two years ago. His best instrument is the drums however! After studying with me for only a few months he has become the drummer in my main ensemble which includes the two previously named students and is performing with us a concert which is part of a big arts festival. I teach my students that there is no limit to what they can achieve if they keep trying!

Schedule and Availability
I teach six days a week year round at my home studio. I offer lessons from 1/2 hour to as many hours as I can fit into my schedule. I also offer Skype lessons.

Some press:

Phil's compositions showcase a variety of ideas and are quite effective at setting up the soloists to explore the various permutations suggested by his tunes. His compositional originality is matched by his incisive playing which ranges from "inside" lyricism to hard edged, riff based, screaming rock and satisfying surreal textures aided by his intelligent use of electronics."
- David Kane, Cadence Music

"With demonstrative technique, Phil is cognizant of the tradition but thinks outside of the box."

Although I'm not technically a student of Phil's, I learn a lot from him every time I play and teach with him. We perform regularly at Berklee, where I'm a professor, and we give concerts and masterclasses all over the Northeast together (most recent was at Cornell). Phil's a warmhearted, patient, brilliant teacher and an outstanding and creative musician, seamlessly putting together everything he knows--jazz, shredding, classical--there's no boundaries for him! He's great at explaining things, and he never belittles a question, no matter how dumb you might have thought it was. Phil's a great friend and a great teacher. -John Funkhouser, Berklee College of Music, Boston

In addition to being the most talented guitarist and musician I have ever had the opportunity to play with, Phil is an astoundingly good teacher. I've played guitar for 8 years and taken private lessons the entire time. Phil has been my teacher for the past 2 years and in that time I have progressed as a musician more than I could have ever imagined. Phil has been the biggest factor in my decision to major in music, due to his unrivaled musical talent, his kind, unassuming, (and funny) demeanor and his seemingly limitless knowledge of the fretboard. He is well versed in so many genres of music, and has such an effortless grasp on improvisation. Any guitarist, from immediate beginners to seasoned professionals, can learn so much from Phil. Kelly is an amazing piano teacher. As a beginner, she has been very understanding about my level of experience and how fast or slow I learn. Every week, we review what I learned the previous week and work on the fluidity of each piece. She makes sure not to overwhelm me with too many pieces or exercises to practice. In the past two months, I have learned so much about playing the piano. It becomes less complicated to learn when someone as patient as Kelly is teaching you.
