I have watched my students (especially the beginners) grow as people as well as musicians over the course of a few months. New York city based guitarist and composer Juan C. immigrated to Miami, Florida at age 21. His work speaks a unique language that blends elements from his early musical experiences in Colombia, as a member of various folk, rock (metal ) ensembles, and his studies in East Asian music fueled by travels and interaction with musicians and artists in China and Japan.
Juan’s music has been performed throughout South America, the United States and Asia. Although Juan cannot return to his native Colombia, his string duet, “Famous Librarians” (commissioned by Olivia de Prato and Victor Lowrie,
was premiered at the Medellín Conservatory of Music.) His piece for electric bass and keyboard, “Glue Pain Ghost,” a collaboration with video artist, Jane Hsu, was invited to a world premiere at the GEISAI Art festival in Tokyo, and the Art Basel festival in Miami.
Juan holds a Master of Music from the Manhattan School of Music, where he studied under the tutelage of Susan Botti in composition, and electronic music with Joel Chadabe. He also holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Miami Dade College, where he studied jazz guitar with Tom Lippincott, and the University of Florida, where he studied composition with Susan Epstein.
*** Lesson Details *** Guitar teaching encompasses many disciplines. One has to be a bit of a psychologist in order to gauge a potential student needs and musical sensibilities. The mathematical aspect of musical notation and rhythm makes us part mathematicians. In the end, there is also a self-actualizing aspect to guitar teaching in the sense that we are always witness to those moments that made us decide a career on music. During my years of guitar teaching I have encountered many types of students, and I have learned from them as much as they have learned from me as they make me question aspects of music that I would have never thought about. I have learned to not take for granted the definition of concepts such as rhythm and harmony, and to look at guitar technique from different perspectives as I find ways to accommodate to a student’s capabilities. Ultimately, it is also a job that requires a lot of planning and structure. My first step, generally, is to assess the student’s ability and interest to find material suitable for them. Then, I proceed to familiarize with the student’s musical tastes and sensibilities to assign practice material accordingly. For example, if the student is interested in rock or pop music, we will work on a particular song that fits his level and also solves a particular technical problem. During that process I will answer any of the student’s questions, and provide insight into musical terminology. We will also work on basic concepts of rhythm, melody, and harmony. My training as a composer and jazz guitarists also enables me to tap into the student’s creative side. In that case, we would start with a basic blues progression and blues scales, and work on the basics of improvisation or songwriting.

With a patient and intuitive approach, Juan tailors each lesson to fit not only the student’s skill level, but also desire for depth of understanding. When I first began taking lessons, I was only able to plunk a few chords and play along with a few basic songs. However, over the course of a year and a half with Juan, I gained a foundational knowledge of the classical guitar, as well as the confidence to site read and play a range of other styles of guitar music. He seamlessly integrated music theory concepts into song studies, helping me learn major/minor scales and chord shapes, and then apply this knowledge to better understand song structures and composition. It has been such a great experience learning from Juan, especially because he is both an exemplary teacher and guitar player!

My piece, Like Giants Through a Keyhole, trio for flute, cello and piano performed as part of the Network for New Music's Cross-Currents in Jazz and New Music: The Schooling and School of Stefan Wolpe series. My orchestra composition, Ideological Explosions of the Absurd Hero, was performed in Milan, Italy.
My music has been featured throughout film and television. I have composed the scores for many feature films, television, web and ad campaigns, and my music has been featured on MTV, VH1, NBC, CBS, ABC, Discovery, History Channel, PBS, etc.

He has been teaching me for a while now. I have waited to post my review until I was confident on giving the correct review. I am an adult and I work, so I have limited time that I can allocate to practicing guitar. I really like his way of teaching because he is to the point, very efficient and knows where I am and what I need. He is able to measure the right amount of challenges for me to practice for next lesson. OTHER LESSON INFORMATION
SINGING: Bel Canto singing technique for the modern singer is taught in private and group classes. No one sounds like old opera singers, even if the student wants to sing opera. Students are allowed to choose most of the material they learn in the lesson. There will be times when Rachel will suggest a song to a student but if the student doesn't enjoy the song, they will work as a team to find a song that does work for the student. Gain a better tone quality, complete control of your voice, bigger range, more flexibility, and confidence. Learn healthy voice technique, how to fully take care of your own voice so you can sing for the rest of your life (even after lessons), and become a self sufficient performer for life.
ACTING: Stella Adler, Stanislavsky, Chekhov, and Meisner Acting Technique for Theatre/Camera is taught in private and group classes. All students are exposed to each technique and Rachel sees which technique each student responds to the most. Once the student and Rachel are able to identify the technique, Rachel continues to use the terminology of that technique for the remainder of the time the student is in lessons. Students eventually are able to play roles truthfully and realistically, even if the roles are opposite of the student's own personality.

I had my first meeting with chris today. I was feeling a bit intimidated before i met him seeing all his credentials and experience. I need not have worried. He made me feel super comfortable and explained all the nuts and bolts of guitar on my level of understanding which is very basic. He was able to relay the lesson to me in a way that made so much sense, it just clicked. I left feeling very accomplished and very much looking forward to the next lesson

Chris was such a great instructor! I first started lessons with Chris a few months ago and I told him I only had a limited time to learn guitar. Taking the knowledge I already had with music, Chris helped me in only a few months to pick up and to be able to jam to some awesome songs on my acoustic guitar. He is very patient and works very well with whatever level you come in as! I came in knowing only one or two chords, and now I know many more and can confidently play some songs! Since I was a crazy busy college student, Chris was also very flexible with when lessons were, which I was very thankful for! I'd highly recommend taking lessons with him!

I love my lessons with Chris! I have no music background and have always wanted to play the guitar but never got around to making it happen. Now as I am older I think why not now?! I looked around for local lessons and found Chris's site. I loved his philosophy of how he teaches an individual based on what they want out of it!
