Chris P.

Philadelphia, PA

Instruction in how recording hardware and software functions, microphone techniques, and production methods.

About Chris

I studied Composition at The University of the Arts and spend a large amount of my time as a professional songwriter and performer. My education and experience has taught me that the most important thing about learning music is to learn it in an interactive way; how to hear it and speak it. I try to focus my students on this idea and use their musical interests to motivate them. As a composer and songwriter I'm constantly involved with the creative process and am always encouraging my students to write their own music and to express themselves.

*** Lesson Details ***
I like to shape a cur
riculum around each student. Everyone has different talents and different desires, so I always gauge those two right from the start. The most important thing to me is that the students not just learn how to play an instrument, but how to be a musician, which includes understanding and conversing in a musical language. Students learn faster and better when they're interested in the subject, so I'll always allow the student to dictate some of the material based on their musical taste.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Amplifier: Fender Super Champ XD
Guitars: Gibson Les Paul Classic, Gibson Hummingbird Pro

*** Travel Equipment ***
The students should have their own guitar and amplifier (if needed)

*** Specialties ***
I'm a particularly accomplished Acoustic Guitar player, but am versatile with electric and all kinds of styles including pop, folk, jazz, and rock.

Music Theory
More than a music lesson.

After taking lessons with Chris, I've learned skills beyond the fundamentals of music theory. He brings a sense of ease when he teaches that in turn makes it easier for me to hear him out. I feel generally engaged when I'm in one of his lessons because he vocalizes with confidence and a great understanding of his craft. For someone who has struggled with music theory for a while, Chris has made it much clearer for me. I think what makes each session worthwhile is his advocation of optimism which is key in getting through all obstacles that usually deter me away from music theory. Overall, Chris is a great teacher because of who he is as an individual.

make hip hop, electronic, dubstep tracks

About Benjamin

I grew up in Glenside moved to Pittsburgh for school and came back because I love it here...I've been playing for 17 years and have a smorgasbord of influences from Zeppelin to the Beatles to Phish to Radiohead to the dirty projectors to Jay Z to Kurt Rosenwinkel & John Scofield. I have been composing and working with original bands for some 11 years and play regularly in the city and up and down the east coast. I have also been teaching for the past 11 years all over the Philadelphia area. i teach from a method I derived myself from years of learning both in and out of school. I think teachin
g music is both aural as well as visual and encourage students to listen to music a lot. most of all i feel that music is fun and the students should enjoy learning so i incorporate their favorite artists and favorite songs into our studies. for serious students I love theory and love sharing what I've discovered over the years.

*** Lesson Details ***
I'm a very laid back guy but I take my playing seriously. music is my life and there's nothing I enjoy sharing and expressing more. I learned to love playing guitar when I was 12 from the coolest guitar teacher ever. he had a vibe that i gravitated toward and encouraged me in just the right ways to get me believing in myself. I try to encourage my students the same way. music should be fun above all and sculpt my lessons to each students individual needs so that they are better equipped to succeed.

Ben was fabulous! He taught me music I wanted to play at a speed that fit for me and simplified harder songs for a beginner like me to still be able to play a song I loved! Great teacher and picks up on your strengths and weakness. I would highly recommended him as a teacher! He's also funny and would make lesson's enjoyable! He was friendly to my dog and birds as well :)

Ryan S.

Philadelphia, PA

Overview of home recording techniques, mic placement, guitar choice, gear choice, setting up a harmonious home work space.

About Ryan

Born in raised on the south side of Chicago Illinois, I grew up listening to A LOT of great Chicago blues guitarists. After receiving my first acoustic guitar I quickly gravitated towards learning to play blues and blues rock guitar at the age of 13. As my hunger for knowledge grew, I began learning and studying other genres of music through private lessons and lesson videos in the styles of Progressive Rock, Shred, Funk, Fusion and Jazz. Music was a way for me to find structure, discipline, self worth and personal expression outside of the confines of the 9-5 work life. Through that I grew as
a person and a musician. My sole reason for teaching is to help others find that passion and those qualities within themselves to live a beautiful and fulfilling life through his/her instrument.

My daughter, who is now 11, has been taking lessons with Jon since last spring. He has done a wonderful job with her, making her feel comfortable and confident. Even though she doesn't practice as much as she should, her skills are really improving under Jon's tutelage. He has done a great job of adapting to her personality, which can be challenging, and developing a teaching style that fits her needs. Both her singing and her guitar playing have really improved and she looks forward to her lessons every week.

I can help you to learn the best methods for recording anything. The important thing is to record it right, so you do not have to fix it in the mix.

About Ricky

Hi! Thanks for checking out my profile. My students call me "Mr. Rick." I teach acoustic guitar lessons for kids and adults, beginners through intermediate.

I'm the ideal teacher for those who want to play by "ear" while learning the essentials of chord structure, music theory, rhythm, and proper technique for strumming and playing the instrument.

I like making people laugh and having them relax and feel comfortable at our lessons together.

I enjoy working with people coming back to guitar, or just starting for fun because they love the guitar!

For students who want to
play at open mics or in a band, lessons include coaching on performance, and how to pull it all together (including how to properly use the mic and vocal techniques for singing while playing guitar).

For students with aspirations of being in a band, or singer-songwriter, I teach the essentials of songwriting and the basics of music recording, production/engineering and music business.

Students have opportunities to perform at recitals and other venues, plus learn more about the music business, and basics of music production and sound engineering.

*** Lesson Details ***
I'm a patient and supportive teacher who offers a relaxed and comfortable learning environment for acoustic guitar students, and also for students interested in singing while playing the guitar.

For guitar beginners, we start with the basics including notes, scales, chords and chord patterns, rhythm, and strumming technique. Students start off by learning songs they enjoy and are interested in playing.

As students advance, or for those with previous lessons or who are self-taught, we focus on advanced chord structure and patterns, music theory, and rhythm guitar technique.

For students interested in singing while playing, I coach them in vocal technique and exercises for pitch and vocal strength. We work on performance skills, for both live performance or in a recording studio.

For students with aspirations of being in a band, or singer-songwriter, I teach the essentials of songwriting and the basics of music recording, production/engineering and music business.

I bring extra value to my students through my experience as a performing songwriter, recording artist, and music producer. I've taught college level courses, and have been a panelist at music industry conferences.

Students have opportunities to perform at recitals and other venues throughout the year.
