Sanford is an exceptional instructor and person

My son stared lessons with Sanford about 7 months ago. He is doing a fantastic job with Sanford as his instructor. Sanford is kind, extremely patient, knowledgable and supportive. He gives my son a little push when he needs with positive words of encouragement. What I found to be wonderful was the way he was able to start teaching all aspects of playing music simultaneously, reading, writing, and playing music. The excitement my son feels every time he is able to play a piece of music is priceless. We have Sanford to thank for that.

Rob Z.

Northampton, PA

About Rob

The guitar has the capacity to energize or to sooth. My desire is to help you encounter and master it's power!

PHILOSOPHY

I enjoy helping my students maximize their potential as musicians. Whether their longing is to simply enjoy guitar as a recreational pastime, or they desire (or have) a career in performance, I endeavor to help my students achieve their personal musical goals. You are encouraged to strive to do your part to the best of your ability: that is, consistent and regular practice. Discipline is vital to progress, and without it, the experience would be shallow and unsati
sfying. But with skilled, caring instruction and self-motivation, you will encounter the might of the guitar and the beauty of it! I will be cheering you on and supporting you every step of the way!

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Although I've always been a fan of British invasion, my childhood guitar teacher told me he wasn't going to teach me "any of that rock 'n' roll garbage." He was going to teach me "the right way," and he did. Through traditional drills and repetitions, I didn't learn to play just "songs," but learned to play music. The solid foundational instruction I received enabled me to recognize the difference, and you will too, regardless of your preference in style or genre.

In 1981, I completed the Certificate Program: Record Production, Sound Re-enforcement from Jon Miller School for the Recording Arts & Sciences. In 1982, I studied Musical Composition at Berklee College of Music in Boston, where I gained a wealth of knowledge. In 1990, I earned an Associates Degree in Liberal Arts, Music Emphasis from Northampton County Area Community College in PA. Since 1999, I've been serving as Director of REZ Music Ministry. Additionally, since 2009, I have served as Pastor of Worship Arts at The Gospel Chapel from 2009-2013. Related strengths include singing, songwriting, recording and producing.

*** Lesson Details ***
Lessons utilize Mel Bay's Modern Guitar Method, the world's premier guitar course of instruction. After three months, you should have a good understanding of this basic material necessary to play contemporary guitar, and within six months, elementary harmonies are studied and elaborated upon. As you progress, you will be taken through scale and technical exercises in a careful and challenging manner, yet in a comfortable atmosphere with plenty of encouragement.

Don't be embarrassed of making mistakes; I will celebrate your accomplishments with you as you persevere. I have plenty of patience and supplemental materials to aid you in your progress.

Weekly exercise and song assignments are given to help you develop strong technique and understand essential music theory. The commitment to daily practice and the importance of adequate preparation cannot be exaggerated. At the same time, the freedom of creativity fosters a passion for the guitar and prevents the boredom of solely playing by rote. There is a short path from boredom to quitting. With the guitar being such a powerful art form, you can be assured that with plenty of practice and persistence, you will enjoy a lifetime of musical blessedness!

I very much enjoy the time I share and learn with Mike. He has been very patient with my slow learning curve. I have noticed that he caters to a person's strengths, which works for me since I have been slowly learning technique and muscle coordination in respect to playing the violin.

I highly recommend anyone at any age to call upon Mike for instrumental instruction.

To TakeLessons, thank you for offering a system that lets people connect with highly competent instructors.

Mike has been very patient and helpful and takes the time to carefully explain the instruction given. Besides being a great teacher Mike is very personable and that makes the lessons stress free. Taking lessons from an accomplished working musician is the best possible choice.
Thank you Mike for taking me on as a student!

Mike is the best!!

I always wanted to learn Violin, but at 26 I thought I'd never get very far. Mike is teaching me Improvisation so that I can jam with my bluegrass friends. After 9 months of lessons with Mike, I am starting to really understand my instrument and am able to jam with my friends! I never thought I would progress this quickly and I know that is all due to the way Mike has taught me and teaching me certain things every week that I can build on and practice at home. I definitely recommend Mike for lessons on any instrument, he is a talented multi-instrumentalist who is interested in all genres of music from classical to country, he is accessible and doesn't make you feel like an idiot when you don't get it right, but he is also tough enough on you that you progress very quickly. He is also interested in teaching you what you want to learn, the right way, so you can get the most out of your musical experience. Playing fiddle is now one of my favorite things to do, I get so much joy out of it, all thanks to Mike and a little hard work!! :)

Allentown, PA

About Nicholas

I am a second generation music teacher for piano and violin. I have been teaching for over 15 years as well as playing both instruments for about 30 years. I have an Associates in Music. Making lessons both fun and educational is what make my students successful in their instruments. My lessons are custom made to how the student learns, not cookie-cut. We also do bi-annual recitals in October and April to showcase the students' accomplishments.

*** Lesson Details ***
My lessons are both fun and educational at the same time. I compromise with my students by having us each pick a piece
to play on top of the usual learning pieces. My students play anything from Katy Perry to 80s music and rock ballads and in between. I use John Thompson and Fingerpower as well as a notespeller for piano and String Essentials for violin. Many of my students can play with both hands after six months. We do recitals each year to showcase the past year's achievements in their pieces.

*** Travel Equipment ***
For either instrument I pick up all books and supplies ahead of the lesson. I have my own violin and music stand that I use to assist in teaching.

*** Specialties ***
John Thompson, Suzuki, popular music, Gospel, New Age, and anything in between
