I teach drum set and marching percussion, teaching for four years. I teach both tenor and snare drum for marching.

Lessons are tailored to the individual student and their experience, goals, and materials available. Having the respective instrument at the teaching location is preferred, but the minimum materials required are drumsticks, a drum pad, and a stand for the drum pad.

Drum set students should expect to learn the basics of technique and drum set-up. From there, lessons are tailored to the individual student, specifically what genres they are interested in. For beginners, I use "The Best Beginner Drum Book" by Drumeo.

Marching percussion students learn a heavier emphasis on technique, constantly being implemented into lessons. Students learn a variety of musical pieces and see technical and musical growth through each piece.

About Kevin

I've been involved in music since fifth grade loved it since! As a performer, I was heavily involved in my high school's music program being involved in: the advanced jazz band (drum set), advanced choir (baritone), musical pit (drum set/auxiliary percussion), show band (vibraphone/tenor drums), an

My teaching technique is learner-centered. I work with students to help them build a strong vocabulary of drum rudiments and have them apply their newly acquired drumming knowledge to the songs and genres that interest them most. I have found this to be ideal for those at the beginning and intermediate levels. For the advanced drummers out there, I may be able to assist with some minor application of technique or perhaps deviate from standard drumming practices to acquire a fuller awareness of the body's interaction with not only the drumsticks and drum set, but how to maintain total postural awareness.

For those interested in flamenco, I have a lifetime of experience with the rhythms of flamenco, am a professional cajón player, and study/perform flamenco guitar.

About David

Many years of drum instruction with students who have learned best with alternative learner-centered approaches including: extreme patience, slow to fast repetition of patterns and exercises, focused breathing, as well as sight-reading, rhythm and ear training. Students with: Asperger's, Autism, D

DAVID IS AN OUTSTANDING TEACHER IN EVERY RESPECT. HIS KNOWLEDGE OF SPANISH SEEMS EXCELLENT, AND HIS INTEREST IN THIS LANGUAGE IS CLEARLY VERY STRONG. THIS ALLOWS CLOSE ANALYSIS OF SPANISH, AND STANDS AS A SIGNIFICANT BENEFIT TO THE DIDACTIC PROCESS. IN TURN THIS PROMOTES A SPIRIT OF LEARNING IN CLASS WHICH IS INFORMATIVE AND GOOD FUN. FINALLY HIS KNOWLEDGE OF SPANISH/ENGLISH COGNATES AND INDO-EUROPEAN ROOTS IS UNUSUALLY BROAD, WHICH MAKES LEARNING SPANISH WITH HIM EASY AND ENTERTAINING. I BELIEVE DAVID HAS A TRUE VOCATION FOR TEACHING, AND I HOPE I CAN GO ON WITH LESSONS WITH HIM FOR SOME TIME TO COME.

Hello! Thank you for considering me as your drum set teacher! I offer lessons to beginner, intermediate, and advanced level students. If you are a beginning student we will start from the ground up with proper technique, and we’ll get some basic patterns going. From there we will learn how to read rhythmic notation and drum set notation so we can get you playing some songs! I like to use handouts and some of my favorite books that I used growing up to help new students understand the importance of being able to speak the language not only by playing what we feel, but also by speaking on our instrument with our ability to read music. I will transcribe beginning songs of your choice, and we will learn the grooves from classic tunes! Intermediate and advanced students will be introduced to rudiment studies, learning different styles of drumming, and learning how to make your own transcriptions so you can start to learn how to read and write music on a higher level, and eventually create ...

"I teach all styles of drumming, but I try to match the student with the style that they love. It’s that love of music that will push them to try harder, reach farther and become a true musician. My students have the opportunity to learn how to read, write and transcribe drum charts as well how to maintain and tune their drums. I teach my students how to play along with recordings and encourage them to join a band or ensemble so that they can experience the joy of music from the start."

About Carmen

I have been a teacher and performer in the San Francisco Bay area for over 30 years. I teach Rock, Blues, Jazz, Funk, Latin, and Classical styles on drum set and percussion instruments. I provide all of the sheet music as well as the recordings that I utilize for the student's assignments.

Carmen is top notch! She has been teaching our children for five years, and has been extraordinary all the way. It began when she personally delivered a used drum set to our home that she hand selected for us. Then it continues with her high energy and motivational techniques to make the lessons fun - yet challenging and exciting as well. Technology is engaged to maintain the experience at home.

Carmen's communication is second to none as well. We often work during the lessons and a sitter drives the kids to their lessons. Carmen makes sure to follow up with us (when needed) regarding lesson plans, areas to improve, and even readiness for future tasks. In a word - amazing!

We are so grateful to have Carmen as the person to foster in our children a lifelong love of music and an eagerness to learn about it. Thanks, Carmen!

Effective instructor. She spreads positivity and makes learning fun. The best indeed!
Agata O.
Carmen has been teaching drums to my now 10-year old son for three years. Her patience, extensive repertoire of teaching methods always adapted to his learning style and progress, her contagious energy and her love of all things drums kept my son's motivation high and let him grow his abilities. I am very proud and impressed when he reads drums scores or figures out the beat of a song. Perhaps the two hardest parts for this young man were learning to play with the metronome and regularly practicing his rudiments. Carmen's many teacher's tricks, including books, posters, recordings, apps and well timed challenges with awesome awards have helped him stay on track.

Carmen keeps detailed notes about each of her students so her attention is always spot on and personalized. She makes herself available for any questions outside the classroom. A great person to be around and a talented musician, Carmen will find a way to make you into the drummer you dream to be.

"Taking drum lessons with Thomas online has been so rewarding. I finally dusted off my old drums and went on a search to find a great teacher and I found him. I'm not looking to become the next Neil Peart or anything. Just want to have fun and learn. He's very easy to talk to and helps me grasp musical concepts in a really digestible way. He has me working on exercises and my durability on the drum set has improved worlds beyond where I thought I could ever be. I really love his work with Minor Characters, a Chicago band he was in. I'm an older guy but I was motivated by Thomas to start jamming in the garage with some friends of mine who play guitar and bass We have about 10 songs we play each week and Thomas helps me work through each one and every week I get better. Take lessons with this guy. He'll change your life!"

"I was lucky to randomly sign-up for a drum course & meet Alexa!! She's been 1 of two favorite teaches in life & will forever remain a friend. She respects a student's musical interests while teaching from a place of support & serious devotion to her work. She encouraged my learning by letting me freely explore what I was musically curious about and had the depth of expertise to encourage my direction. From first lessons, through suggesting I find a band, attending my live performances, encouraging special summer workshops, and inviting me to her performances, Alexa is devotion supported me through years of maturing into a credible drummer. She's not only a supportive expert in her field, but a guide to what it means to become a drummer from encouraging action/performance as an integral part of learning this instrument. I am off to college in the fall, majoring in music, focused on drums and guitar. Thank you Alexa!!!"

Drumming With Your Weak Hand: 3 Helpful Tips

If you're like most drummers, you have one hand that doesn't always like to cooperate. And for some, the frustration that ensues makes it much easier to just ignore the problem and favor the dominant hand. Over time, while the stronger hand gets better control and technique, the weaker hand just gets... well, weaker and weaker. But just like switch hitters are invaluable players on a baseball team, learning how to build strength in your weaker hand can make you a much more efficient drummer. …
