The main thing that I like to remind students of, when they take lessons with me, is that music is FUN! A lot of hard work goes into it, but the end result is always rewarding! I am a pretty laid back teacher, yet I still work to inspire my students to try their hardest and to be the best that they can be at what they do. It is very important to me that my students get their musical wants AND needs fulfilled.

For cello, I take the standard approach; getting to know the instrument and assigning various exercises so that the student will gain technical fluency, and building repertoire. Although I am not a certified Suzuki teacher, I do use some of their methods, since I, myself was a Suzuki student. I like teaching the student memorization of pieces, so that they can focus on technique and expression within a given piece.

In my cello lessons we will work on a variety of topics, including:

-Gaining a feel and command for your own instrument.

-Finding your SOUND: Helping you ...

About Makala
I have loved music as long as I can remember. I know its cliche© to say so, but it's true! :)

For me, having parents of different ethnicity and siblings that were much older than me, I was heavily impacted by the wide variety of music to which my family members listened. The force of this crayon box of rhythms and sounds captivated and affected me so much that it is the key experience that I draw from in making my own music today.

I grew up in Fairbanks, Alaska (a small town in the center of the state) so my only option for entertainment and fun was getting involved in the arts! I started performing at a very young age as both a dancer and a musician. I studied classical ballet, modern dance, hip hop and street dance, and world dance traditions throughout my formative years, which helped me to gain rhythmical fluency. I started my
formal music training when I began to play the cello. From then on, I was hooked on the sound and I immersed myself in music as much as I could; performing, competing, working in as many musical groups and productions as possible (as both a vocalist and cellist), and even teaching.

I moved to Seattle in 2003 to study opera at Cornish College of the arts, only to later change my major to Jazz, and then again to Latin music studies. Since graduating from Cornish in 2007, with my Bachelor of Music degree, I have been actively and diligently working in the local music scene; performing and recording with artists and groups of many different styles. Everything from various Latin genres, to Rock, to R&B/Soul, to Hip Hop, and Jazz. Through my music, I aim to reach out to people of all cultures. I also aim to teach my own students with the hope that they too can discover the same continuous love of music that I have grown to feel (and still am growing to feel) over the years. :)

*** Studio Equipment ***
88 key piano, cello, various percussion instruments, guitars, ukulele, library, computer, lessons are given in a private studio.

*** Specialties ***
As far as voice goes, I teach all genres and styles but I personally specialize in the Latin genres. I teach all aspects of the music; rhythm, harmony, theory. I even teach performance; how to work with a band in real-time communication, song communication (or story telling as I like to call it), and developing ones own personal style. I believe that there is much more to singing than just vocal technique alone, so I believe in teaching musical fundamentals and functions so that my students will not only be considered vocalists, but competent musicians.

Makala hit it off with our third-grader right off the bat, and she was a great sport about meeting the whole family at the first lesson. She put Josh at ease, evaluated what he already knew without making him uncomfortable, and got right to work improving his fundamentals in a way that seemed to get him really motivated. We're extending our series - thanks Makala!

Makala is very seasoned at teaching music. I love that fact that she's patient but at the same time persistent. My daughter has grown tremendously from being under Makala's structured music teachings. Makala is very versatile and has a really open of mind with music. She can sing like an angel and her personality is warm and friendly. You can't go wrong with choosing her to help you with your music.

I love helping students who are new to an instrument gain the confidence and skills necessary to pursue it long-term. As a former orchestra teacher, I have a soft spot for strings. My students tend to develop a genuine love for their instrument and desire to continue studying.

About David
I have spent the last 11 years teaching both music and Spanish. I have directed secondary orchestras, taught elementary music, IB Diploma Program Spanish, middle and high school Spanish at a school for students with learning differences, and been the Executive Director for a nonprofit youth orchestra. I maintain my practice of teaching private lessons because of my passion for teaching one-on-one.

I have a particular knack for getting middle school-aged through adult students excited about new aspects of what they are learning. My enthusiasm for both music and language tends to translate to my students. Honestly, I'm a nerd when it comes to music and language; I love learning about the intricacies of different chord voicings or teaching the differences between gerunds and present progressive verbs.

Aside from music, I love being o
utside. Skiing, fly-fishing, and backpacking are some of my favorite things in the world.

*** Lesson Details ***
I teach guitar (beginning through advanced), and beginning violin, viola, and cello, as well as offering Spanish tutoring.

Although classical guitar is my primary strength, I am more than willing to teach any style that a student may want to learn. If you want to learn rock, blues, jazz, etc. I'd be thrilled to teach you that particular genre. To me, style is simply a vehicle to learn over-arching musical ideas and skills.

The most important musical skill that I can help students develop is reading music. If a student can read music, regardless of current technical ability, ambition, or musical preferences, they will be able to learn more music than I will ever be able to teach them. Linguistically, the most important skill I can develop in students is listening (though I do, of course, teach students to read, write, and speak as well). This is the base of so much future learning, as they will hear much more than simply what they are learning in tutoring sessions.

I make it my serious goal to teach myself out of a job, to give students the tools that they need to go out and learn as much as they possibly can (or want to), so that when our lessons eventually come to an end, they have a solid base from which to grow.

My personal style is fairly laid back. I am a very easy-going individual, but I do expect that my students practice. As long as a student is practicing and putting forth effort, I will bend over backwards to help them.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I have my own instruments and books. I expect students to have their own instrument and be willing to buy books as well.

*** Specialties ***

David is a great Guitar teacher.

David has been a great guitar teacher for my teenage kid! He was patient with her but he also challenged her to work harder. My kid learned a lot in just a few months, from no experience to being able to play somewhat difficult scales and chords! I believe that David’s experiences both as a high school teacher and as a musician help him to be a great guitar teacher.

I have been playing the cello for over 10 years. I enjoy helping students to learn with a strong background in theory and applying it to the physical learning. I also focus on intonation and learning to trust your finger memory

I help students learn the basics and eventually let the student choose their own music. I encourage students to participate in ensembles and recitals. Although it is not a requirement I believe in the importance of getting comfortable with being uncomfortable. Although this is what helps us to grow....I also understand those who may not wish to participate and respect their choices.

So....shall we begin?

About Tudi
Tudi Campbell is a classically trained cellist and violinist, and customizes lessons to meet the needs of each student. She teaches beginning to intermediate on both cello and violin for all ages. Tudi believes in providing a strong background of music theory, intonation, and aiding the student in music notation. Tudi believes in building a solid foundation to assist students with performance skills.

Tudi believes that the cello and violin are for everyone, not just those interested in a professional career. She emphasizes the student's personal “voice” and style. Tudi believes in allowing the student to take part in choosing their own musical path. Tudi aims to make music as fun as possible while helping the student to mature in the skill of playing the cello or violin.

Tudi currently performs with the Evergreen Community Orche
stra under the direction of Dr. Marcin Paczkowski. Tudi also enjoys gardening, kayaking, sewing and reading.
