Undisputed fact: playing ukulele is lots of FUN!

I love playing ukulele. It’s fun, it’s easy to learn, and people get a big kick out of it! Chords are easy to play and the technique is simple. Whether you are picking up an instrument for the first time or adding to your current repertoire, ukulele is always a great choice.

Every single lesson is designed just for you. We focus on your goals while having fun playing music together. We talk about good practice habits and how to achieve new heights with your abilities. You learn to play songs that you recognize as well as improvising your own.

Together we will discover the many roles that the ukulele can have including rhythms, melodies, fingerpicking, and solos. I will also help you understand the fundamental principles of music. This will take the guess work out of your playing, enabling you to make solid choices with consistent results.

Talk to you soon!

I start with ascertaining the student’s level of playing ability and what the student wants to accomplish. I then tailor lessons to the individual needs of each student.  So the mix of focus on the "Four T's" - Technique, Theory, Tone and Time - will vary with each student. There may be a bit of “homework” at times, but not to worry - I promise to keep it soulful and fun above all else!

Thomas is honestly an amazing musician and teacher. He was really patient with me. Despite having to deal with major timezone differences (as I live in Myanmar), he took the time to figure it out. Also, he helped me figure out the stuff it took me months to figure out. He also really knows what he's doing. I learned so much in that hour of practice. 10/10 would recommend him.

"Dr. Backus is a phenomenal music teacher. In just a few lessons we could hear the difference in the way our daughter was playing piano. We have been so impressed with Dr. Backus’ ability to teach challenging piano techniques or music theory to our daughter and to make it interesting and fun. Our daughter not only enjoys her piano lessons but she is looking forward to them. Dr. Backus is a top-level piano performer and music teacher. Dr. Backus is extremely knowledgeable in her field and she is also organized and provides a framework of study for her students that is compatible with the student’s other activities and still ensures real progress in piano performance. Dr. Backus is passionate about music and about teaching music. She demonstrates so much positive energy and confidence that she captivates her students during the lessons. We highly recommend Dr. Backus as piano/music teacher."

4 Essential Classic Rock Guitar Solos That Will Make You a Better Player

Learning to play other people's guitar solos is a great way to begin learning to write your own! Guitar teacher Nils B. shares his tips to learning four classic rock solos so you can develop your technique... An essential part of every musician's development is to imitate those who have already mastered their instrument. After settling on a song, give it a couple of close listens (preferably on headphones or a decent stereo), pick up a good transcription, then learn the rhythm parts, while …
