About Kareem
A native of the Pacific Northwest, saxophonist Kareem K is a performer, composer, and educator, who is in high demand for his talents both on and off the stage.

Growing up in the northwest with its vibrant music scene allowed Kareem the opportunity to study with, listen to and perform with world class jazz artists residing in the area. Artists such as Tracy Knoop, Jay Thomas, Don Lanphere, Bill Ramsay, Hadley Caliman, Julian Priester and many others had a large impact on Kareem early in his musical education. This direction and guidance continues to inspire and lead Kareem as he continues his lifelong passion undertaking a career as a professional musician.

Today, as a performing artist he spends most of his time leading his group for which he composes and arranges most of the music. The band is constantly on the move as a sought af
ter performing group and spends most of its time performing in and around the Pacific Northwest. When not leading his own group Kareem can be seen and heard performing as a sideman with many other top notch musical acts and projects, most notably The Paperboys from Vancouver BC.

As an educator Kareem divides his time teaching jazz improvisation as an artist in residence at The Tacoma School of the Arts, directing the award winning student jazz ensemble at Pierce College, conducting masterclasses and workshops at schools around the Puget Sound area, and maintaining a full load of private students. Along with his teaching duties Kareem is the director or The Tacoma Jazz Association, serves on the Tacoma Arts Commission, and is a D'Addario Woodwinds performing artist.

Kareem holds a Bachelors Degree of Music from Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle Washington which he attended after receiving a full scholarship.

Throughout his years of teaching Kareem has worked with students of all ages and abilities, from beginners just getting started, to advanced players who simply want new ideas and direction.

Lessons are relaxed and are focused on what you would like to learn.

I usually begin with assessing where students are in their abilities and then come up with a lesson plan based on what they already know and what they would like to accomplish.
They can be geared towards a 5 year old with no musical training whatsoever, or to an advanced musician who wants to further develop their skills.

Topics that I cover in lessons throughout a typical day of teaching include: Instrument technique, sight reading skills ( note and rhythm recognition ), memorization skills, music theory, ear training, improvising, and composing.

After 3 to 6 months of lessons and regular practice a beginning student should have a good command of their instrument and a strong foundation of sight reading. At this point we normally will also have started some music theory as well. For students wanting to focus on jazz we will have already begun improvising as well.

*** Studio Equipment ***
5x10 room w/ piano and seating for parents

*** Specialties ***
I focus on the basics of learning to read music and basic technique on the instruments that I teach. From there I proceed with theory, ear training, improvising, composition etc. It all depends on what the students want to learn. I am comfortable teaching classical music as well as jazz, rock, composition, and improvisation.

I have played saxophone since I was in 5th grade. I have been in a variety of groups over the years; rock, funk, punk, jazz quartets and big-band jazz, and the experimental use of electronics. You will learn proper breath (dynamics) and embouchure control, tonguing techniques, standard and alternate fingerings, approaches to improvisation and assistance with a varied repertoire for performance. I own a 1967 Beuscher alto saxophone and an Elkhart C-tenor saxophone. My home studio has recording capability which I use to record lessons when they are needed for review. Ear training is a crucial part to music on any level, and I encourage playing by ear as an important element to improvisation and music appreciation. My lessons are fun, informative, and creative!

About Benjamin
Hello Future Students!

Whether you want to pursue a Musical Career or simply learn how to Play your Favorite Tunes for friends and family, I am here as your Teacher and Guide. I teach at my own home, at the Student's home or through the use of Skype.

I am originally from Ann Arbor. I spent much of this century living in NYC and prior to that I lived in Chicago. Those experiences vastly helped me develop Networking, Performance and Teaching experience. I now live in southwest Detroit near River Rouge.

As a Father of four, I have had the joy in teaching my own children Guitar, Saxophone, Songwriting, Composition and Keyboard. As a parent I have found that Patience and Encouragement is often the best form of support.

It has been proven that learning Music helps develop intuition, self-awareness, and social skills as well as imp
rove in other subjects not directly related to the arts such as Mathematics and Science.

One of the most important aspects of playing Music is being able to Play by Ear. This has been a priceless gift that I was born with and have developed throughout my life. I encourage all musicians, young and old, to do the same. The use of simple Rhythmic Dictation and Ear Training exercises can do wonders for "picking out" Beats and Harmonies no matter what Genre we are interested in.

I attended music courses at The Boston School of Contemporary Music and Thomas Jefferson College (MI). I have a BA at Columbia College Chicago double majoring in Music Composition and English .

My band THIRD BORDER's "Sun of Water; Sea of Light" was selected to be nominated for the Grammy's as The Best Alternative Album of the Year in 2006. On this record, I played Guitar, Saxophone, sang Lead Vocal and wrote all the Songs. If you are a Songwriter, we can polish up your approach.

As a Composer, I have done Sound Design for Film, Dance, Spoken Word and Multi-media Performance - most notably with renowned poet Anne Carson and former members of The Merce Cunningham Dance Co. I also formed and composed two symphonies for my 12-member saxophone orchestra in NYC. Currently, I am rehearsing new work with a Detroit-based multiinstrumental orchestra.

I hope to talk to you soon!
Benjamin

My teaching style is relaxed with a forte on Patience and Encouragement. Though I have specific expectations on what needs to be learned, I gear each lesson towards the student's wishes and their personal direction in Creativity. Whether you are a beginner or an advanced student, I can guide you wherever you are headed!

For Guitar (acoustic or electric), you will learn the fundamentals of Music Theory, Chord Structure, varied Strumming and Picking Techniques, and Scale Positions to travel from one part of the neck to the other. Any song you wish to learn, I can teach!

For Saxophone, you will learn proper Embouchure technique, Notation, Music Theory, and Scale Patterns for improvisation. Whether you are interested in a Classical, Blues, Funk or Jazz approach, I can help you find your own sound that is both personal and professional.

I teach 2nd year Piano and Drums/Percussion directing you into Intermediate level.

For those leaning toward the experimental genres, I am well-versed in the use of Electronics. Much can be accomplished with my lessons on Sound-Scape Improvisation either as 1 on 1 or Group Workshops.

*** Studio Equipment ***
At Home Studio: music stands, metronome, guitar amps, electric and acoustic guitars, guitar tablature, staff music paper, a scanner for weekly homework. I can also record and send MP3s of our lessons to review at home if you wish.

Hi! I have a Bachelors in Music Education and have experience teaching many beginning students! I have 3 children and decided to give up regular teaching to be with them. I believe that tone production is the most important area of study. It doesn’t matter what you can play if it doesn’t sound good. I can’t wait to help more students love to “play” on their instruments!

About Kim
Hello! I started my love of music at a young age with my family playing and singing at family functions. That turned into a wanting to learn how to play the flute and I went up through high school with that instrument. After high school I branched out more into vocal performance. After that I joined a traveling performance group. No not the circus! I joined Drum and Bugle Corp. They taught be how to play the Baritone and I marched a straight Baritone. I then learned the Mellophone and marched that after. Since I had experience with Drum Corp Marching I taught over 10 different marching programs over many different years. I graduated from College with my Bachelors in Music Education and was a music director until I had my children and decided to give up regular teaching. After all of the years I spent honing my craft I decided t
o continue giving lessons. I have the most experience with Flute, but can teach many other instruments: flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, baritone/euphonium, piano.
I have worked with many different age groups and levels of ability. I am happy to help you learn to have fun and "play" your instrument!

I am an award-winning saxophonist with experience teaching students from beginning elementary to advanced high school levels. My style of teaching is interdisciplinary, tailored to each student's needs and goals, and focuses on artistry and technique equally. Students should expect to not only see noticeable progress in their first few lessons, but also develop the skills and knowledge to grow into competent and compelling musicians ready to leave their mark on the world!

About Soren
After a decade of studying and performing music around the country, I have recently returned to my roots in the Puget Sound region! I hold an MM from Bowling Green State University and a BM from the University of Oregon, both degrees in music performance but focusing specifically on the saxophone.

Every saxophonist has a unique sound, unique aspirations, and a unique musical identity. I believe that with focused regular practice, a solid grasp of technique/sound concept, and clear personal goals, students can take ownership of this identity and reach their full potential in any style or genre. I happily teach all ages and ability levels; my students have ranged from beginning fourth grader, to high school senior preparing for music in college.

My background is primarily in classical and contemporary music. I regularly take on a wi
de variety of performance projects, from traditional saxophone fare to the avant-garde. Recent performances include:

-radio broadcasts on KING FM, WGTE FM (Toledo, OH), and the nationally distributed program Performance Today;
-guest recitals at Ball State University and Fredonia State University of New York;
-new music festivals across the Midwest;
-a tour of public schools and remote community centers throughout western Washington; and
-Diving Santa at the Seattle Aquarium.

I am also passionate about chamber ensembles. Currently, I perform with a flute/saxophone/French horn trio, which, in less than a year together, has commissioned 6 new works for this new combination of instruments. One of the greatest joys in music is the special bond we make with others -- musicians, composers, and audiences -- through the creation of new music. I live for this joy, and strive to pass it on to each of my students.

Please message me before purchasing lessons! TakeLessons does not allow messages between you purchasing and me accepting new lessons. I am more than happy to answer any questions, and look forward to meeting you and helping you/your child become a better musician!

About DAMIAN J
Greetings!

First and foremost I want to congratulate you for choosing to follow a path in the Arts! Music is one of the most sacred skills humans possess for no other species on the planet truly comes close to mimicking this treasured ability.

My mission is to help guide you on your quest to making music. I ask very little in return but your full satisfaction in knowing you made the right decision today. Should you accept our time together will be well spent focusing on your strengths in music and eliminating the weaknesses.

I invite you to listen to music, explore different genres and make your mind up as to what you would like to play. Sound is everything so that is my first goal and the hardest to achieve being from a distance. My anecdotes will prove to be useful in getting you to produce the best possible tone quality on the
instrument. Technique is what truly unlocks all doors in music having the ability to play anything comes from scale practice and patterns. Metronomes are a vital part of your success.

Finally reading and basic music theory is the essential skill that separates men from minnows in the sense of making music consistent. The discipline necessary to do this is minimal but important. I trust that you will excel in my class because my methods are tried and true. If at the end of the first lesson you feel you will not progress on your mission with me I completely understand but do think that will be unlikely as I want to share with you my deepest thoughts on how this can be done and in return you will receive the best education possible.

Thank you for your time and I look forward to providing you with some great lessons!
