About Makala

I have loved music as long as I can remember. I know its cliche© to say so, but it's true! :)

For me, having parents of different ethnicity and siblings that were much older than me, I was heavily impacted by the wide variety of music to which my family members listened. The force of this crayon box of rhythms and sounds captivated and affected me so much that it is the key experience that I draw from in making my own music today.

I grew up in Fairbanks, Alaska (a small town in the center of the state) so my only option for entertainment and fun was getting involved in the arts! I started performing at a very young age as both a dancer and a musician. I studied classical ballet, modern dance, hip hop and street dance, and world dance traditions throughout my formative years, which helped me to gain rhythmical fluency. I started my

formal music training when I began to play the cello. From then on, I was hooked on the sound and I immersed myself in music as much as I could; performing, competing, working in as many musical groups and productions as possible (as both a vocalist and cellist), and even teaching.

I moved to Seattle in 2003 to study opera at Cornish College of the arts, only to later change my major to Jazz, and then again to Latin music studies. Since graduating from Cornish in 2007, with my Bachelor of Music degree, I have been actively and diligently working in the local music scene; performing and recording with artists and groups of many different styles. Everything from various Latin genres, to Rock, to R&B/Soul, to Hip Hop, and Jazz. Through my music, I aim to reach out to people of all cultures. I also aim to teach my own students with the hope that they too can discover the same continuous love of music that I have grown to feel (and still am growing to feel) over the years. :)

*** Studio Equipment ***
88 key piano, cello, various percussion instruments, guitars, ukulele, library, computer, lessons are given in a private studio.

*** Specialties ***
As far as voice goes, I teach all genres and styles but I personally specialize in the Latin genres. I teach all aspects of the music; rhythm, harmony, theory. I even teach performance; how to work with a band in real-time communication, song communication (or story telling as I like to call it), and developing ones own personal style. I believe that there is much more to singing than just vocal technique alone, so I believe in teaching musical fundamentals and functions so that my students will not only be considered vocalists, but competent musicians.

My daughter LOVED her first lesson! She was smiling from ear to ear following her lesson and was excited to share what she learned. Makala provided tips to support at home practice. I am happy to have found such a wonderful teacher to introduce piano to my daughter.

Makala is an inspirational teacher/mentor. She takes time to learn what I like, and tries to adjust our lessons in-the-moment to my personal learning style. I feel connected and safe in our lessons, and love the way she challenges me. Thank you for making music a positive force in my life, Makala.

Raised in largely bilingual household. B.A. in Spanish from UW (cum laude). English fluency slightly stronger. Extremely high level Spanish proficiency although the minutiae within humor can sometimes be lost. Excellent for those who need help with pronunciation, grammar (clarification of grammatical rules like the difference between a direct object and an indirect object, etc.), conjugation, and conversation.

About David

Many years of drum instruction with students who have learned best with alternative learner-centered approaches including: extreme patience, slow to fast repetition of patterns and exercises, focused breathing, as well as sight-reading, rhythm and ear training. Students with: Asperger's, Autism, Dyslexia and related states have benefited greatly.

DAVID IS AN OUTSTANDING TEACHER IN EVERY RESPECT. HIS KNOWLEDGE OF SPANISH SEEMS EXCELLENT, AND HIS INTEREST IN THIS LANGUAGE IS CLEARLY VERY STRONG. THIS ALLOWS CLOSE ANALYSIS OF SPANISH, AND STANDS AS A SIGNIFICANT BENEFIT TO THE DIDACTIC PROCESS. IN TURN THIS PROMOTES A SPIRIT OF LEARNING IN CLASS WHICH IS INFORMATIVE AND GOOD FUN. FINALLY HIS KNOWLEDGE OF SPANISH/ENGLISH COGNATES AND INDO-EUROPEAN ROOTS IS UNUSUALLY BROAD, WHICH MAKES LEARNING SPANISH WITH HIM EASY AND ENTERTAINING. I BELIEVE DAVID HAS A TRUE VOCATION FOR TEACHING, AND I HOPE I CAN GO ON WITH LESSONS WITH HIM FOR SOME TIME TO COME.

I teach in a way that is as focused on the grammar as you want to be. I prefer conversational classes, but for many in traditional classes it is the grammar that they are not understanding.

About Bryce

Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn. -Ben Franklin

An investment in knowledge pays the best interest. - Ben Franklin

The unconventional method of teaching begins here

I am a Spanish Language Consultant

I am a concierge tutor meaning that I make every meeting personalized for you. Everyone learns a language differently. For some they just want to speak. For others they want to learn to read or write. And some want to do it all. Either way I will do everything in my power to assure that happens.

Where did I learn Spanish?
I took it in high school like all of us and failed out in the second year. Then seven years later I took a class in Bellevue College and got the best grade in the class. Soon after the class finished I moved to Bogotá, Colombia for a year and half where I really improved

my level to near native status. When I was a kid in high school I did not see how cool it is to be able to speak another language nor did I care. However, now it was a defining point in my life and something that no one can take away from me.

My schedule is also very flexible giving you plenty of freedom over when to meet.

I am connected to a network of native speakers who are all my very close friends who can be included in the sessions when the time is right or whenever you may like.

I have been a Spanish Consultant since 2011 and love doing it. I really get fired up when students begin to take off on their own with the language with less and less of my help.

I don't think you will find a more passionate tutor.

Students who will succeed with me can be of any age but should have these traits if they wish to excel:
Discipline
Not afraid to make mistakes
Positive attitudes
Open mind
Willingness to think outside of the box

Thank you and have a beautiful day now

Private Spanish Teacher

I took 8 years of Spanish classes and lived in Ecuador where I used Spanish on a daily basis.

My teaching philosophy is to help students engage in learning. I find that a personal connection to new information makes it more engaging and meaningful, and students remember it better too. It's also more fun.

That being said, if learning is more readily achieved for your student through other methods, we will do whatever works best. I cater to results, because my ultimate goal is the student's success.

About Joshua

I am a tutor who earned a music teaching degree, substitute taught, and didn't become a school teacher. I held professional tech retail jobs and am supplementing my life with my passion - education.

Whatever subject or instrument I teach, I celebrate students' successes; and I enjoy helping learners have new aha moments.

The majority of my students take guitar, bass guitar, or Spanish lessons. I am an educator and help my students learn other skills and knowledge sets too.

I went to Ohio State University for college, earned a BA in Music Education, and graduated Cum Laude. I also spent 4 years in the Ohio State University Marching Band.

Through my healing journey, I've developed patience, insight, and understanding for my students' learning processes.

I'm excited to help you incorporate new skills into your life!

Our son first time playing bassoon. Base on my son experience, he find Joshua to be very nice, patients, and explains a lot of information. It help him understand about the instrument and the sound when he play. He do have a sense of humor which help my son to have fun and be more comfortable. He also teaches other instruments, too. From my lessons, students will gain engaging and exciting instruction. Students will use Spanish every time we meet. My aim is to help you meet your goals and help you enjoy it along the way!

About Jimmy

My name is Jimmy. I have been teaching Spanish for about seven years now. I have taught all ages from kindergarten to adults.

As a current teacher, my primary goal is to make sure the students have engaging and fun experiences while learning Spanish. I do not lecture solely on the nuts and bolts of the language but rather allow the student to perform the language in order to learn it.

I do want to make clear that I do teach young children (ages 2-12) but I prefer to teach them in person and at least twice a week. I believe the experience to be more valuable that way.

Additionally, I ask that parents or potential adult students and with me talk for a while before signing up for lessons. I may not be able the person to give you what you need. I want to be sure your needs are met through Take Lessons and I may not be the person th

at can do that. So, please message me often.

One last note: If we are meeting in person, I am only willing to meet in public locations and not anyone's home.

I am always excited to teach someone this language I love so much.

¡Gracias!

I can teach you the grammatical rules, and pronunciation, but at the end of the day you are the one who, through perseverance, achieves the goal of speaking Spanish.

Create spanish in words, not only to teach Spanish, but also because I want to share my knowledge of the language and culture that Latin America has. I know that not all of us learn in the same way, that's why I focus on creating a personalized plan just for you, so that you learn step by step and without fear of being wrong. In addition, I take into account your favorite conversation topics and help you learn faster.

I am a native Spanish speaker who has been teaching and tutoring Spanish for about 7 years. My goal is to make learning Spanish enjoyable, and I want to help the student feel more confident expressing their thoughts and ideas in a foreign language. I am very patient and supportive of my students all throughout the learning process .

My approach strikes a balance between grammar and verbal comprehension/ speaking skills. I try to lay a strong foundation that will help the student succeed on every level.
Often students do a lot of written exercises but seldom have an opportunity to put into practice what they have learned. That is why conversation is such a fundamental part of my lessons.

I understand the difficulties of learning a foreign language, I carefully tailor the lessons to the needs of my students. I slowly guide them from point A to point B, step by step. With this approach, I help them to discover how truly fun learning Spanish can be!

About Irene

I am a College educated native Spanish and English speaker who has been teaching and tutoring Spanish for about 7 years. My goal is to make learning Spanish enjoyable, and I want to help the students feel confident expressing their thoughts and ideas in this foreign language.

My approach is student centered, incorporating grammar, verbal comprehension and vocabulary acquisition . I try to lay down a strong foundation that will help the student succeed on every level and eventually attain fluency.
I'm often approached by people who tell me that they took Spanish in H.S. or College and are frustrated because they can't understand a native speaker or communicate with them.
Most likely they learned the theory of the language but had little opportunity to put it into practice. That is why conversation is such a key component of my teach

ing. No one can learn any language without developing verbal and listening comprehension skills.
With me the student can choose their favorite topic and perfect their conversation skills in an environment where it's ok to make mistakes.

I understand the difficulties of learning a foreign language, and I'm very patient with my students. I carefully guide them from point A to point B, step by step. With this approach, I help them to discover how learning Spanish can be truly rewarding !
I look forward to meeting you and helping you reach your goals.

I am 48 years old who like the Spanish language and have been trying for a few years to learn it on my own. I have tried Duolingo, bought books, and watched Youtube Videos but I was still struggling to put a sentence together. I am taking lessons with Irene and I can see big progress. Irene tailors the sessions to my needs and toward my goal. She prepares the session, is on time and takes her time to make sure I am understanding the concepts. I really enjoy the class and look forward to it. Whatever is your goal, I recommend Irene.

There are so many cool Spanish words to choose from, that it's hard to narrow it down to just 50! Spanish is a beautiful language, and as you listen to native speakers, you'll notice how elegant it can sound. Scientists have even deemed it the happiest language, too! Not only is Spanish a cool language, but it also has a logical structure. Pair that with the many Spanish-English cognates, and you can see why it's one of the most popular languages to learn.
