I have been teaching piano in the Seattle area for close to ten years. I have worked with young beginners to intermediate and some advanced students. My methods are eclectic and I often draw from the Kodaly Method for beginners. I encourage my students to sing along while they play to reinforce learning, accessing multiple neural pathways.

I teach my students to read music and play with feeling and heart. I instill a love of music in my students by creating musical moments in them and expose them to a wide variety of genres and styles. Students will learn basic technique, theory, improvisation, and performance etiquette, all while having fun!

About Holly
I am an enthusiastic musician with a talent for teaching. I have worked as a voice and piano teacher in Seattle for over ten years. Previously employed at The West Side Music Academy in 2003-2006, I realized my passion for individual instruction early in my career. I studied Music Education under Dr. Romana Holmes at Seattle Pacific University and furthered my knowledge in Pedagogy.

I am a huge believer in being a lifelong student! I have continued my music education throughout my adult life and have studied Jazz, Classical, Opera, Pop, Rock, Reggae, Blues, Soul, Gospel, and Folk. As a pianist I began individual instruction at age fourteen and have studied Jazz with Darius Willrich, Ryan Burns, Dan Kramlich and Mark Samson.

I began singing and playing piano at age five. I have been involved in school and community choirs includin
g The Total Experience Gospel Choir, Seattle Pacific University Women's Choir, and The Spokane Area Children's Chorus. Musical productions including Grease, Once Upon a Mattress, Chicago, and Les Miserables. I have been a featured soloist in ensembles throughout my life. I also performed in the Jazz Ensemble at Seattle Central Community College for three years as a vocalist and pianist.

I have an extensive background as a performer in small and large bands in the Seattle area. I have played in various venues throughout the area including Key Arena, Benaroya Hall, McCall Hall, Folk Life Festival, Marymoor Park, Highway 99 Blues Club, Tula's Nightclub, and the Nectar Lounge to name a few. I have also worked as a studio musician with various funk, soul, and electronic music producers and bands.

I study African dance and other forms of dance including hip-hop, house, and have traveled to Guinea, Conakry to study dance and music with Les Ballets African a premier African dance ensemble that tours the world. I also spent the summer of 2012 working with a non-profit organization in Chiapas, Mexico teaching music and dance to kids k-12 in the Indigenous Village of Ignacio Allende. More recently I have been studying and performing with Pat Wright and The Total Experience Gospel Choir since 2014.

*** Lesson Details ***
As your teacher I can help you thrive in music. I promise to provide a fun learning experience with lots of laughs and smiles. My number one goal is to help build a love and passion for music and boost student's confidence. I understand and appreciate different levels of experience and make sure to cater the lesson to the individual. Whether my students are young or old; whether they view voice or piano lessons as a just-for-fun hobby; or whether they wish to pursue a serious music career - I am happy to facilitate all of this and more, as we work together to reach their goals.

My musical foundation is one built on proper technique and strong musicianship skills. Students will learn proper posturing, breathing, and vocal production- in addition to reading and music notation, music theory and more. As students master these techniques I will work to help them bring out their own voice and creative expression. We will explore music from a variety of genres including Jazz, Classical, Pop/Rock, and more. Each of my students will be able to perform in ways that are not only healthy and technically sound but unique to them.

*** Studio Equipment ***
In the studio I have an acoustic upright piano, shakers, tambourines, and a library of music books. The studio is also used for dance lessons and has hardwood floors and mirrors. There is also a waiting room area for parents to sit and listen in during lessons.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide books, metronome, and keyboard stand. Students are expected to have a piano or keyboard.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in Jazz, Classical, Pop, Rock, RnB, and Broadway style singing. I use an eclectic approach to teaching.

Structured to reading sheet music and ear training. Includes music theory chord progressions and modal types. Time signature and rhythm is heavily taught, as well. Styles can include everything from Classical to Pop, Ragtime to Rock n' Roll!

About Brett
MUSIC INSTRUCTION AND
ENJOYMENT OFFERED. Very enthusiastic and
experienced musician available for instruction offering the following:

# In-depth written music theory coupled with an equivalent of ear training and tone
recognition

# Introduction to performance skills with instruments that include:

Guitar - electric & acoustic
Drum Kit and percussion rhythms
Piano/Keyboard

# Group lessons or private instruction, depending on personal preferences and age
groups

Personal
experience includes:

1) 15 years of GUITAR: professional performance
and composition. Styles include rock, folk, blues, chord
progressions, and alternate tuning.

2) 15 years of DRUMS and PERCUSSION: Latin, swing, blues, as well as rock, funk, punk, and reduced to
p forty beats.

3) 15 years of PIANO: which utilize
several years of personal instruction in classical, popular, and some ragtime,
in addition to an intimate knowledge of Piano Proficiency (scales & modes,
chord structures & inversions, common chord progressions, intervals, circle
of 5th, and finger exercises)

4) 2 years of MUSIC THEORY and COMPOSITION at college level.

Lessons will include additional materials to the primary instrument such as sheet music for
sight reading, rhythm patterns, tabletures, and chord charts.

***Above all, I encourage students to select those pieces, tunes, or songs that have appealed to them the most; perhaps even inspiring them to learn a musical instrument in the first place. Adaptations are a common and enjoyable part of the teaching process.

*** Lesson Details ***
Expect efforts, on my part, to steer learning into areas of the students particular interest as well as conventional genres such as classical, popular, folk, blues, etc...

Moreover, I rely on ear training as a strong complement to written music theory and sight-reading; often using recorded music samples or simple patterns on a piano.

I try to balance method-type published lesson books with beginner, intermediate, or original composition sheet music to specifically selected pieces.

Ideally, with a reasonable practice schedule each week, full comprehension of the written music grand staff and an ear to catch a false note will become second nature. By then, more opportunities to learn actual pieces and styles become greater, having got the initial learning curve under the students belt.

*** Studio Equipment ***
*snare drum
*electronic keyboard/piano

*** Travel Equipment ***
lesson material/music media samples can be provided for copy
student would have own instrument

What a terrible experience. I signed up for lessons for my wife from Brett as a gift because he listed times that would work for my wife given that we have a young daughter, and have a hard time making time for lessons. Brett told us 3 days before the lesson that the time wouldn't work, then simply never showed for the rescheduled first lesson. Worse, he simply refused to do scheduling via email (he would leave voicemails and failed to return my wife's call when she called back as they were playing phone tag), and then told us he had another commitment during the slot we had supposedly reserved for him. Worse, he failed to update the site as he continually cancelled lessons and never showed up for scheduled times. I now have a huge hassle of getting a refund on the money I paid for lessons as opposed to a lovely gift for my wife. Life's too short and we're too busy for such an awful experience.

Brett is fantastic with our 10-year old son who just enjoys playing piano and isn't looking to become a concert pianist someday. So many kids are miserable playing the same boring things over and over and Brett really listened to our needs and just nurtures our son's interest in music. Bravo!

Seeing one of my students develop a passion for music is more rewarding than something else. It's important that each student is unique and progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a student's desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. By trying to find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs. I'd like to combine the games and concepts in order to make the lesson more fun.

Hi there! I've been playing piano since I was four, and teaching for over a decade!
In that time, I've run into a lot of former piano students who've been burned out on the instrument; people who don't play anymore because they didn't like the way lessons were structured, or didn't love what they were playing. I've made it my mission to reverse this trend by crafting lessons for my students centered around giving you the skills and techniques you need to get started playing the music you love. I've taught everything from classical showstoppers to movie themes to music from video games and anime. It's all about what kind of music you're in to!

For those looking for a more serious approach, I've helped prepare students of all ages for auditions, college or high school music programs, and even gigs as professional musicians. Let me know what your goals are and what you're hoping to achieve on the instrument, and I'll create a lesson plan to fit your needs!

About Ryan
In addition to being a piano, drum, and music software teacher for over a decade, I also work as a composer and sound designer for video games. As someone who had a lot of great teachers growing up, I think it's important to emphasize the fun in learning an instrument, instead of only focusing on technical skills or music theory (though those are big too).

There's no point in taking lessons if you don't like what you're learning. To that end, my specialty is in creating a lesson plan that revolves around getting you the skills you need to perform the music you want to play. Here are just a few examples of the kinds of pieces I've helped students learn in the past:

-I've taught students a ton of Hollywood's best movie scores on piano; everything from Pirates of the Caribbean to The Avengers. Even The Exorcist, if you're down to get scar
y!

-I've helped students learn the ins and outs of ear training by teaching them how to play their favorite anime theme songs from memory alone.

-Like classical or jazz? I've shown people how to shred on everything from Chopin to Count Basie.

-Video game nerd (like me)? There are a ton of amazing soundtracks in games, and I've taught many students how to play songs from Zelda, Halo, and Final Fantasy, as well as indie games like Undertale and Journey.

-Want to be that guy/girl that can bang out awesome Karaoke jams at parties? I've taught people to play hits by Lady Gaga, Journey, 21 Pilots, and many more.

I've worked with kids and adults from beginner to advanced, so no matter what your age, background or skill level, I'd love to meet you and chat about what you want to get out of learning music.

Hello future pianists! Playing the piano should be fun, but also educational. You can expect to learn the traditional scales, warmups, but I also like to incorporate various teaching materials in my lessons, such as games, learning apps, flashcards, etc. Kids love it (and adults, too)! Learning a new skill can be scary and stressful, but I always strive to be patient and kind with my students, while maintaining a high standard.

Did you know that the piano's full, original name is actually the "pianoforte?" It comes from the two words piano (soft) and forte (loud), because the instrument is capable of producing a wide range of dynamics. And that's an example of the little tidbits you can expect from taking lessons with me!

About Erica
Hello future students, parents and/or guardians! Thank you for taking a moment to read my profile. I have been teaching voice/piano for ten years and counting! I am a professional opera singer and a graduate of the prestigious Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore, MD, where I received my Master of Music in Vocal Performance/Vocal Pedagogy. I have performed at Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center, and have sung with many different companies around the United States including Seattle Opera, Tacoma Opera, Utah Festival Opera, and Maryland Lyric Opera, to name a few. Even though I am a classically-trained singer, I love working on various different styles with my students. And speaking of students, some have gone on to compete and win in voice/piano competitions, talent shows, and even audition for The Voice! What ever you or your child
's musical goals are, I will strive to do my best in helping you or your child attain them (and more).

With extensive experience in teaching and performing, and an incredible passion for music-making, Danny teaches to each student's level and interests - and has fun doing it! While studying both jazz piano and voice, he received a BA in music from The University of Washington. He has been performing as a pianist and vocalist, teaching private piano and voice lessons, and also directing multiple choirs over the last two decades. Danny teaches beginning and intermediate piano and voice lessons, and also specializes in jazz, improvisation, and theory. He hopes to pass on some of his music-making passion to you!

About Danny
I love to share the gift of music any way I can - whether performing or teaching or leading worship. I am 42 now, but I knew at a young age that I wanted to be a musician and teach music - and so, music has been a constant source of joy in my life for nearly 40 years.
I started out in choirs and piano lessons very young, and then fell in love with jazz as a teenager. By the time I started college, I was performing as a professional singer and I had already starred in several high school musicals.
While continuing to perform with my renowned a cappella group, Kickshaw, I managed to finish my BA in music AND start a family in the late nineties. I had the great opportunity to study jazz piano from Marc Seales and voice form Julian Patrick while at the University of Washington. For about a decade after high school I continued to perform, t
each, and study music 'full-time'. I had private voice and piano students all around the Seattle region, and I was also Jazz Choir director at Edmonds College.
For the last decade, my main music focus has been directing music for The Seattle Church of Christ. This has allowed me to foster all areas of my musical talents while also working as a professional woodworker, and raising three kids. I have also continued to gig as a pianist and vocalist with my jazz group over this last decade as well.
....It's 2017, and I now have the opportunity to resume my personal music studies to receive a Masters in Music Education. This also gives me the freedom to take on private students! I have already started teaching piano and voice students at my home studio on Bainbridge Island, Washington; that's where you come in! I hope that I will have the opportunity to share some of this life-long joyous music experience in music lessons with you... please join me, and sign up for lessons!
I enjoy teaching students of all ages. Here's what I specialize in:
- Beginning to intermediate piano
- All levels of jazz piano
