I am an enthusiastic musician with a talent for teaching. I have worked as a voice and piano teacher in Seattle for over ten years. Previously employed at The West Side Music Academy in 2003-2006, I realized my passion for individual instruction early in my career. I studied Music Education under Dr. Romana Holmes at Seattle Pacific University and furthered my knowledge in Pedagogy.

I am a huge believer in being a lifelong student! I have continued my music education throughout my adult life and have studied Jazz, Classical, Opera, Pop, Rock, Reggae, Blues, Soul, Gospel, and Folk. As a pianist I began individual instruction at age fourteen and have studied Jazz with Darius Willrich, Ryan Burns, Dan Kramlich and Mark Samson.

I began singing and playing piano at age five. I have been involved in school and community choirs includin
g The Total Experience Gospel Choir, Seattle Pacific University Women's Choir, and The Spokane Area Children's Chorus. Musical productions including Grease, Once Upon a Mattress, Chicago, and Les Miserables. I have been a featured soloist in ensembles throughout my life. I also performed in the Jazz Ensemble at Seattle Central Community College for three years as a vocalist and pianist.

I have an extensive background as a performer in small and large bands in the Seattle area. I have played in various venues throughout the area including Key Arena, Benaroya Hall, McCall Hall, Folk Life Festival, Marymoor Park, Highway 99 Blues Club, Tula's Nightclub, and the Nectar Lounge to name a few. I have also worked as a studio musician with various funk, soul, and electronic music producers and bands.

I study African dance and other forms of dance including hip-hop, house, and have traveled to Guinea, Conakry to study dance and music with Les Ballets African a premier African dance ensemble that tours the world. I also spent the summer of 2012 working with a non-profit organization in Chiapas, Mexico teaching music and dance to kids k-12 in the Indigenous Village of Ignacio Allende. More recently I have been studying and performing with Pat Wright and The Total Experience Gospel Choir since 2014.

As your teacher I can help you thrive in music. I promise to provide a fun learning experience with lots of laughs and smiles. My number one goal is to help build a love and passion for music and boost student's confidence. I understand and appreciate different levels of experience and make sure to cater the lesson to the individual. Whether my students are young or old; whether they view voice or piano lessons as a just-for-fun hobby; or whether they wish to pursue a serious music career - I am happy to facilitate all of this and more, as we work together to reach their goals.

My musical foundation is one built on proper technique and strong musicianship skills. Students will learn proper posturing, breathing, and vocal production- in addition to reading and music notation, music theory and more. As students master these techniques I will work to help them bring out their own voice and creative expression. We will explore music from a variety of genres including Jazz, Classical, Pop/Rock, and more. Each of my students will be able to perform in ways that are not only healthy and technically sound but unique to them.

*** Studio Equipment ***
In the studio I have an acoustic upright piano, shakers, tambourines, and a library of music books. The studio is also used for dance lessons and has hardwood floors and mirrors. There is also a waiting room area for parents to sit and listen in during lessons.

I provide books, metronome, and keyboard stand. Students are expected to have a piano or keyboard.

Hello! My name is Jessi H. and I received a Bachelor’s of Art in Music from Bryn Mawr College and a Master’s of Music in Theory and Composition from the University of New Mexico. Playing with other people is a great joy and throughout my schooling and afterward, I have performed in in orchestras, chamber ensembles, pit ensembles, and in collaborations with artists in other mediums. I began teaching violin lessons during my undergraduate degree and have maintained a private studio since then, which has been full of a wide variety of students and has branched out to theory and composition.

My intention in the first few weeks of lessons is to identify the goals of each studen
t and how best they learn. While familiar with most teaching methods, I prefer to modify my style of teaching to what is effective for each student. If the student is motivated by what we are playing, then skills grow exponentially faster. Students are encouraged to perform in spring and winter recitals to showcase their progress.

After three to six months, my students can expect to have a solid foundation in the subject they are studying, a start on the repertoire or subjects of their choice, and motivation to keep going!

Jessica has a fantastic knowledge of the violin. Not only can she explain the theory behind music but relate it to everyday examples. She has a fun personality too; so she makes understanding and learning the pieces fun and easy. She taught me to learn more, push my boundaries, and gain confidence while playing.

I have been teaching French Horn, piano and composition privately for about nine years, mainly in Snohomish and King counties. I have also coached horn players in local school bands during this time, as well as helping students with learning disabilities. There are many difficulties that students encounter when studying music, and I want to help you turn weaknesses into strengths, and help you find out where your greatest strengths (and interests) lie in music. I'll work with you to help you understand your own musical desires and goals, so that you can get the most out of your lessons. I am committed to understanding each of my students, and to sharing my love of music with each one of them. I teach French Horn, piano, music theory and composition as well as songwriting. Currently, I teach in the South Snohomish County and North Ki

I was eight years old when I started taking piano lessons in Tacoma, WA. When I was 12, I discovered that I had perfect pitch while playing church hymns with my dad. This ability has served me well on a number of occasions. I discontinued formal piano lessons when I started college, but I continued to play piano on a nearly daily basis from that point on, keeping my technical skills at a very advanced level. I played trumpet in school bands starting in the 5th grade, and switched to French Horn in the 8th grade. The appeal of the horn may have had something to do with its rich, warm sound, its intricacy and complexity, and the demands that it placed on me to play with a high degree of pitch accuracy. I loved the challenge of playing accurately on the horn then, and I still do. As a horn student, I have studied with Jacqueline Shannon, Kathy Farner, Kathy Colton, Lawrence Lowe, Elizabeth Ward, Jeff Snedeker, Rodger Burnett and Stacie Eliason. As a horn performer, I have played with community and regional professional orchestras in the Seattle area, Central Washington, Olympia, in the Tacoma Youth Symphony, and in numerous ensembles in college.

I have studied music at Tacoma Community College, Brigham Young University and Central Washington University. I received Bachelor of Arts in Music at Central Washington University. I plan on attending graduate school in the future, focusing on music composition and film composition, as well as French Horn and piano performance.

As a music composer, I have written works for many different ensembles, choral works, solo piano pieces, and works for solo instruments. I am drawn to rich harmonies and beautiful melodies, as well as interesting timbres and musical variety, in my own music and that of the music I listen to. I am easily able to visualize music in color, and I have a thorough understanding of how the elements of music combine together to affect emotions in listeners. This is one of the reasons that I am currently pursuing film and media composition.

As a student, teacher, performer and music composer, I know that there are countless musical topics that students are curious about. I feel that students should feel free to ask any question in the field of music, even if it may seem like a "dumb" question. I value the sincerity and passion for good music that so many students have. I will help you acquire the knowledge and skills that you need, so that you can see more clearly your own musical goals. Previous and current students I have, each have made improvements in their own playing and knowledge of music, some of whom have made vast improvements in their playing and knowledge of music.

As I have taught music privately for a little while now, and can reasonably compare how I teach with other instructors that I know well, I can say with certainty that there are at least a few areas of my teaching that are somewhat unique and highly beneficial for certain students, if not most students. I value ear training and using flashcards with beginner students quite a bit, and am fond of teaching not only the "nuts and bolts" of music, but also, how music "works", such that a student of mine can write their own music if they have the desire to do so. I also try to assign a wide variety of music for each student (which differs according to each student's musical interests, abilities, and areas of their playing that need to be improved), especially as they improve and approach the intermediate levels of playing. There are many reasons I do this, but for the student, it is very important that they do not feel particularly "bored" with the music they are playing. I also have found that students who have a more sensitive nature tend to be more comfortable with the way I teach, as I reserve higher, stricter expectations for more advanced, older students. I also try to always be as patient, kind, and considerate with every student as I can be. Lastly, I highly encourage questions and feedback at any time during a lesson, and I try to create an atmosphere where the student feels comfortable to do so.

I accept students from five years old on up, but I prefer horn students to be at least ten years old before starting lessons, unless they have noticeably greater abilities to focus for a certain period of time than other children their age.

*** Lesson Details ***
I have always wanted people I interact with to be, as a general rule, comfortable and relaxed in any setting. This certainly applies to the students I teach. However, students can expect that musical improvement will only occur through daily practice and constant effort. That being said, I am more interested in helping students overcome any difficulties in this area through reviewing their own practice habits and motivations, rather than using harsh discipline. It is crucial that students see the connection between their own practicing and musical improvement. Once this occurs, they can take more responsibility for their own progress with that added awareness.

The material chosen for each student will vary considerably, depending on their current knowledge, experience and ability level, innate abilities, musical tastes and priorities. The progress that is made will, to a large extent, be determined by the student's practice habits and natural ability. However, over the course of a few months or so, students should see noticeable improvement in their own musical abilities, if they practice and pay attention during lessons.

-French Horn: pencil, mute, tuner/metronome, maintenance/cleaning supplies, some books depending on if it is a first lesson, etc. I bring my own horn, and expect the student to have their horn. Occasionally, I will employ a recording device for the purpose of assessing personal teaching effectiveness, or for the student to evaluate their progress/record their practicing.

Ben is great if you want your child to love piano. He is a fun teacher and was very patient with my son, who was a bit turned off from music due to prior experiences. He actually wrote songs for my son to play since he needed more time at the beginner level. He was great when my son was nervous at recitals and festivals and had strategies to help him deal with nerves.

Hello! My name is Serena!

Music shapes my life and has made me the person I am today. My experience in training in opera, musical theatre, jazz, and pop has expanded my musical skills and knowledge. Not only have I been trained in performance, but I have also studied music history, music theory, conducting, movement training, ballet, Alexander Technique, acting, yoga, stage craft, improvisation, other languages, diction and the International Phonetic Alphabet, voice science and anatomy, and vocal pedagogy. I have completed my Bachelor of Music in Operatic Vocal Performance from the prestigious Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University under the tutelage of the legendary Carol Vaness. I have also studied with acclaimed teachers and coaches around the world including Dr. Kari Ragan and Maestro Dean Williamson.

This year has been w
onderfully packed with performance for Seattle Opera. I just closed out a 78 performance run of CINDERELLA IN SPAIN where I sang the role of CINDERELLA and was even on the poster! I also performed the roles for the Seattle Opera preview performances of GRETEL in HANSEL UND GRETEL, VIOLETTA in LA TRAVIATA, KATYA in KATYA KABANOVA, and QUEEN OF THE NIGHT in MAGIC FLUTE. I made my Seattle Opera debut singing ALITSA and RACCOON in their touring production of "OUR EARTH", as well as performing on the mainstage in many productions. My upcoming performances include singing in the Seattle Opera kick off to the season SUMMERFEST in July; and OLYMPIA in LES CONTES D'HOFFMANN with Pacific Northwest Opera. My other roles include ALKANDRE in PENELOPE with Vespertine Opera in Seattle, WA; FRASQUITA in CARMEN with OperaBend in Bend, Oregon and Pacific Northwest Opera; and SUSANNA in LE NOZZE DI FIGARO with the Seattle Opera Guild. I also made my international debut in December 2014 singing GRETEL in HANSEL UND GRETEL with Opera Mariposa in Vancouver, BC. I have also been the featured soloist as "Christine" in Ten Grand's Phantom of the Opera at Benaroya Hall in Seattle, WA, and many lead roles in both opera and musical theatre: such as Semele (Semele), Marie (La Fille du Regiment), Gretel (Hansel und Gretel), Countess Ceprano and Gilda (Rigoletto), Blondchen (Die Entfuehrung aus dem Serail), Maria (West Side Story), La Fee (Cendrillon), Sarah Brown (Guys and Dolls), Cathy (The Last 5 Years), Rosina (Barber of Seville), and more! *** Lesson Details ***
My studio provides musical knowledge through private lessons including healthy vocal technique, basic understanding of music theory, and basic piano skills. I encourage a fun and focused environment. Come ready to learn, and let's make music!

A typical lesson will include vocalises that detail proper technique, some ear training work, some music theory training, and will be followed by repertoire. During this time, students will learn how to produce clear and authentic diction (English and other languages), breath management, phrase shaping, smooth transitions between higher and lower pitches, stylistic ornamentation, as well as dramatic involvement of the piece.

Students will learn the importance of the foundations of breath support, and how to create a healthy sound for any genre while keeping the unique qualities of their own voice-- no cookie-cutter singers here! Students will also learn how to read music, practice effectively, perform authentically, and take care of their delicate instrument for a lifetime of singing!

While Skype is a marvelous tool that has revolutionized the world of teaching, nothing can replicate natural acoustics. In-studio lessons are suggested for a clearer and more personable lesson.
**Skype lessons are reserved for long distance students only**

STUDIO ABSENCE and CANCELLATION POLICIES:
Regularly scheduled and attended lessons are the best way to see positive changes in your voice! The smooth running of the Studio Schedule helps make that happen. Therefore, missing lessons is discouraged and make up lessons/cancellations are not given in the Studio unless:
- I have had a performance or rehearsal that conflicts with our lesson time and cannot have the lesson as scheduled. If this occurs, I will inform you of the event as soon as possible and give you the option of a make up lesson or cancelling the lesson.
- Notices of foreseen cancellations (family vacations, religious holidays, school functions, special occasions etc.) are eligible for rescheduling or cancellation if given before the first lesson of the month.
- Of course, life can throw us for a loop! Illness, emergencies, and unforeseen events may possibly be given make ups or cancellations and will be determined at the Studio's discretion. (In the matter of illness: standard procedure is that if the student can attend work/school, they should come to their lesson. A cold can easily be worked around. If the voice is affected (for singing students), Studio time can still be used to work on ear training, music theory, music history, etc.)

All other absences will result in the lesson being marked as "missed". A hard copy of the Studio Policies and further details will be given to the student at the first lesson. Please feel free to ask any questions or clarifications.

*** Studio Equipment ***
The studio lessons take place in a designated area of my home. The room includes seating for parents to observe lessons as well as a weighted keyboard (88 keys), music stand, desk, and materials. No pets. Lots of street parking is available. Shopping and coffee/food located within walking distance.

My daughter has been taking lessons from Serena for more than two years. We are very happy with her and plan to continue. Training is for classical opera and focus is on basic technique.

Two years of college level music theory under my belt, and applied in studies on the guitar and composition. I'm not just a theory nerd, I'm also pretty darn good at explaining it, and more importantly, why it helps.

About Ian
Ian has graduated with an associates of music, along with studying with a handful of Seattle's finest instructors for Jazz guitar. In addition to studying flamenco guitar in Barcelona with the world-renowned Pedro J. Gonzales, Ian is also is a practiced percussion and drums instructor, and trained vocalist. He regularly plays in clubs around Seattle, is frequently employed by local musical theater orchestras, and already teaches a vibrant studio in Northeast Seattle.

I have a six year background of teaching music, which overlaps with a six year background of working at and managing a K-5 after school/summer daycare, so I can especially excel at getting the best out of young students, but love to teach all ages.

rious angles. I have taught seven-year old girls to strum and sing Taylor Swift songs just as much as I have taught aspiring young jazz players their beginning standards and Jazz theory. Ultimately my goal as a teacher is to have fun connecting and playing the music that my students are passionate about, while simultaneously attempting to introduce them to new concepts and music.

I am a tutor who earned a music teaching degree and didn't want to be a school teacher. I worked professional jobs in retail and tech sales and have come back to teaching.

Whatever subject or instrument I teach, I always make sure to work with the student first. I enjoy helping learners have new aha moments.

The majority of my students take guitar, bass guitar, or Spanish lessons, though I am an educator and help my students learn other skills and knowledge sets too.

I went to Ohio State University for college, earned a BA in Music Education, and graduated Kum Laude. I also spent 4 years in the Ohio State University Marching Band, partially to rehab a brain injury.

In search of helping our 10 year old son build some self-confidence we sought out clarinet lessons this summer. He started playing in school last year, and it was something our reluctant son liked "enough" to want to build up some competency. Joshua has been amazing! He finds just the right amount of challenge to encourage my son to practice, but not get discouraged. My son looks forward to his lesson each week and told me that he isn't even sure he wants to switch to saxophone next year because he is having so much fun playing the clarinet. Joshua is amazing with children, and has spent time getting to know our kiddo and find out what will work best for him. Patient, calm, and inspiring--very talented instructor.

Joshua Blatman is a fantastic music teacher. He has a great resume, is experienced in a variety of instruments, and a solid background in teaching.
I think any kids lucky enough to learn music from Joshua will have fun and hopefully fall in love with learning it, just like my kids have.

I whole-heartedly recommend Joshua for anyone of any age and any skill level who wants to enrich their life learning guitar. I appreciate the fact that he makes the time and has the patience to adapt to my needs. Joshua is flexible in scheduling - especially for those unforeseen incidents - which is appreciated.

I continue to learn and improve my teaching by attending workshops, conferences, and be involved in music teacher groups. These are both in person, social media, and podcasts. I believe it is important to play your instrument if you teach it. My BM degree from UW-Stevens Point taught me how music is important in so many parts of life. My family of 6, includes 3 sons and 1 daughter. My youngest is a sophomore at Thomas Jefferson.

I ask that you have a well maintained instrument before signing up for lessons. ie. an acoustic piano or keyboard that has minimum 76 keys, 88 is PREFERABLE, keys need to be weighted/touch sensitive. You can ask me where are apropriate places to rent or buy a piano.

Mrs. quick has been great!😊She was the only teacher to give my 4 yrs old lessons. Aiden looks forward for them. She makes the lesson fun for him. I would really recommend her!

Mrs. Quick is a very accomplished musician, a creative teacher and great with her young students. My 12 year old daughter has taken piano lessons with Mrs Quick for 5 years and has developed a love for music and improved immensely over that time. My 9 year old son just started piano lessons with Mrs Quick and is very excited as he is starting to make music.
