I want to make sure my students have a good time learning drums but I also want to make sure they learn a lot..! I always make sure to ask my students what they want to learn and what their favorite music is... after that, I figure out what type of lessons to plan out.

About Emerson
Thanks so much for your interest in starting music lessons with me. I’m so excited to share my passion for music with you! As Lao Tzu said: “Music in the soul can be heard by the universe."

Lesson details:
My main goal as a teacher is to help my students reach their goals. If my student wants to learn how to play rock, hip-hop, and jazz drums I believe that it's my job to teach them how to play those styles..! If my student wants to get accepted into a music school I will make sure that they are prepared for an audition whether it be for orchestral percussion, jazz drums, rock drums, etc.

What students should have:
All students should (but don't have to) have a 3-ring binder to organize handouts in...!

Things that drum students should have: A drum set, drum sticks, a drum pad, and a music stand.

Recommended
books for a beginning drum student:
Fundamentals for Snare Drum by Garwood Whaley
Elementary Snare Drum by Mitchell Peters
Encyclopedia for Reading Rhythms by Gary Hess

Things that guitar students should have: A guitar, a guitar tuner, and a music stand.

Recommended book: Hal Leonard Guitar Method (Complete Edition) by Schmid and Koch.

My specialties:

Drum specialties: Jazz, Latin (Brazilian, Cuban), African, Rock, Funk, Metal, Pop, Hip-hop, R&B, Blues, Country, Reggae, and Marching. I am proficient in drum reading, drum transcription, practice techniques, and drum rudiments and their application on the drum set.

Orchestral percussion specialties: keyboard percussion (marimba, xylophone, glockenspiel, vibraphone, chimes), snare drum, timpani, bass drum, cymbals, tambourine, triangle, orchestral excerpts, etudes, technique, important literature, and practice techniques.

Guitar specialties: reading music, tablature, chords, scales, improvisation, and technique.

Wide variety of styles/genres:
e.g. Rock, Swing, Latin, etc.
Includes all snare rudiments, as well as full trap-kit exercises.
Familiarization of multiple time signatures.

About Brett
MUSIC INSTRUCTION AND
ENJOYMENT OFFERED. Very enthusiastic and
experienced musician available for instruction offering the following:

# In-depth written music theory coupled with an equivalent of ear training and tone
recognition

# Introduction to performance skills with instruments that include:

Guitar - electric & acoustic
Drum Kit and percussion rhythms
Piano/Keyboard

# Group lessons or private instruction, depending on personal preferences and age
groups

Personal
experience includes:

1) 15 years of GUITAR: professional performance
and composition. Styles include rock, folk, blues, chord
progressions, and alternate tuning.

2) 15 years of DRUMS and PERCUSSION: Latin, swing, blues, as well as rock, funk, punk, and reduced to
p forty beats.

3) 15 years of PIANO: which utilize
several years of personal instruction in classical, popular, and some ragtime,
in addition to an intimate knowledge of Piano Proficiency (scales & modes,
chord structures & inversions, common chord progressions, intervals, circle
of 5th, and finger exercises)

4) 2 years of MUSIC THEORY and COMPOSITION at college level.

Lessons will include additional materials to the primary instrument such as sheet music for
sight reading, rhythm patterns, tabletures, and chord charts.

***Above all, I encourage students to select those pieces, tunes, or songs that have appealed to them the most; perhaps even inspiring them to learn a musical instrument in the first place. Adaptations are a common and enjoyable part of the teaching process.

*** Lesson Details ***
Expect efforts, on my part, to steer learning into areas of the students particular interest as well as conventional genres such as classical, popular, folk, blues, etc...

Moreover, I rely on ear training as a strong complement to written music theory and sight-reading; often using recorded music samples or simple patterns on a piano.

I try to balance method-type published lesson books with beginner, intermediate, or original composition sheet music to specifically selected pieces.

Ideally, with a reasonable practice schedule each week, full comprehension of the written music grand staff and an ear to catch a false note will become second nature. By then, more opportunities to learn actual pieces and styles become greater, having got the initial learning curve under the students belt.

*** Studio Equipment ***
*snare drum
*electronic keyboard/piano

*** Travel Equipment ***
lesson material/music media samples can be provided for copy
student would have own instrument

*** Specialties ***
Electric Guitar, Acoustic Guitar, Piano, Drums, Percussion, Music Theory
finger picking styles and chord progressions - guitar
lead and rhythm patterns - electric guitar
latin, blues, rock, jazz styles - drum kit & percussion
classical & popular tunes - piano/keyboard

I'm into my second month of weekly guitar lessons with Brett and can't believe how well I am playing already!! I've had some basic guitar lessons in the past but still very much a beginner. Brett knew precisely where to start and what I needed next to advance my playing, and broke it down into attainable steps. So far I've learned a good handful of strum patterns; I can finally play two songs pretty well and sing along; and I am in the rudimentary stage of learning to finger pick. Really love the fact that beautiful sounds are coming from my instrument! Highly recommend if you're ready to make the commitment to becoming a capable player.

What a terrible experience. I signed up for lessons for my wife from Brett as a gift because he listed times that would work for my wife given that we have a young daughter, and have a hard time making time for lessons. Brett told us 3 days before the lesson that the time wouldn't work, then simply never showed for the rescheduled first lesson. Worse, he simply refused to do scheduling via email (he would leave voicemails and failed to return my wife's call when she called back as they were playing phone tag), and then told us he had another commitment during the slot we had supposedly reserved for him. Worse, he failed to update the site as he continually cancelled lessons and never showed up for scheduled times. I now have a huge hassle of getting a refund on the money I paid for lessons as opposed to a lovely gift for my wife. Life's too short and we're too busy for such an awful experience.

Great teacher for my young daughter

Brett has been a great teacher for my 5 year old daughter. She is just learning the basics of piano and Brett has been great at expanding her skill sets. She really enjoys practicing with him and actually looks forward to when he comes over every week!

Professional teacher since 2008. Started with a snare drum in fourth grade and never stopped! Alumnus of University of Washington (BM, cum laude, Jazz Studies) + Roosevelt High School. I make sure to teach students what they are most interested in while also providing them with a strong musical foundation they can apply to any path.

About Evan
I love playing drums, and I love teaching others how to play drums. As a recent graduate from the University of Washington's acclaimed jazz program as well as an alumnus of the prestigious Roosevelt High School Jazz Band, I am a professional drummer and teacher with an extensive and unique set of experiences. Since middle school, I have been lucky enough to perform and tour all over the US and Europe, playing everything from house shows to esteemed competitions and festivals. In addition to being a member of several active local projects, I have performed with the Seattle Symphony; UW faculty members Bill Frisell, Cuong Vu, Luke Bergman, Ted Poor, and Marc Seales; several Cornish faculty members including Jim Knapp, Jovino Santos Neto, and Wayne Horvitz; and celebrated NYC-based players Wynton Marsalis, Tim Berne, Ralph Alessi, and Andrew
D'Angelo. Aside from that, I am a co-founder of Table & Chairs, a new Seattle-based record label, as well as a co-founder of the Racer Sessions, a weekly forum and performance outlet for new and improvised music.

I began teaching in 2008, shortly after beginning my studies at the University of Washington. My private students have ranged from total beginners to advanced, each one presenting a unique set of interests and abilities to work with. In addition to teaching my own students, I have much experience as a substitute percussion teacher at Northshore Junior High School (Kingsgate, WA) and Spotlight Studios (Woodinville, WA). I have also presented many clinics and workshops at local schools including Garfield High School, Edmonds-Woodway High School, Ballard High School, Eckstein Middle School, and Holy Names Academy, as well as for Seattle JazzED. For these, the topics covered have ranged from free improvisation to straight-ahead and big band jazz.

*** Lesson Details ***
For beginning players, I like to start with the books "A Fresh Approach to the Snare Drum" and "A Fresh Approach to the Drum Set," both by Mark Wessels. These books do a great job of laying down the fundamentals that all drummers should learn at the outset of their education. Beyond that, what I teach depends largely on any specific path(s) the student may wish to pursue, though of course it is totally fine if the student doesn't immediately know what they would like to study beyond the basics. In that case, I would do my best to construct a rough curriculum that I think would work well for the student. The following books are all ones I have worked with and have found to be excellent at improving unique things: "Syncopation" (Ted Reed), "Stick Control" (G.L. Stone), "The Drummer's Complete Vocabulary As Taught By Alan Dawson" (John Ramsay), "Patterns" (Gary Chaffee), and "Portraits in Rhythm" (Anthony Cirone).

I prefer lessons to be focused on a curriculum, however customized it may be, as I have found that approach to be the most efficient, especially with younger players. While I believe that it is very important to learn the fundamentals of drumming, I also believe that some of the most rewarding experiences a student can have may be achieved through realizing their own unique creative potential. Thus, I find it great to set the curriculum aside for part of the lesson, either to allow the student some time to show me what else they've been working on, listening to, watching, thinking about, or perhaps to just jam and have fun. I also expect students to make progress on their own between lessons, though I understand fully from my teaching experience that the amount of progress I can expect is different for each student.

*** Studio Equipment ***

*** Travel Equipment ***
Sticks, practice pad, books

My teaching technique is learner-centered. I work with students to help them build a strong vocabulary of drum rudiments and have them apply their newly acquired drumming knowledge to the songs and genres that interest them most. I have found this to be ideal for those at the beginning and intermediate levels. For the advanced drummers out there, I may be able to assist with some minor application of technique or perhaps deviate from standard drumming practices to acquire a fuller awareness of the body's interaction with not only the drumsticks and drum set, but how to maintain total postural awareness.

About David
Many years of drum instruction with students who have learned best with alternative learner-centered approaches including: extreme patience, slow to fast repetition of patterns and exercises, focused breathing, as well as sight-reading, rhythm and ear training. Students with: Asperger's, Autism, Dyslexia and related states have benefited greatly.

I believe teaching needs to be tailor-fit to the individual. There is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to private instruction. Our lessons will begin by me getting to know who you are as a student and as a musician. We will determine what you want out of music and your instrument, then we will set goals to get there. All of this will be a collaboration between me and you. I believe that music must be a self-driven endeavor. It is a vehicle for self-discovery.

That being said, I do believe in having a solid technical foundation, and I will push you to develop a daily practice routine. I try to begin every lesson with a rudimental warmup, regardless of age or experience. I also try to include free-play time, playing together, or playing along to music with every session to have fun and develop creativity. I believe fun, creativity, and human-connection is what music is all about, and technique is the work you put in to make those things happen. We will always end on a positive note ...

About Alex
Alex began his drumming career at age 11, and it quickly became his number one passion. Graduating from the snare drum to the drum set in high school, he learned to love the excitement of the stage with his rock band, Ghost Animals, and dove deep into the world of jazz while playing in his high school jazz band. He pushed himself to be well-rounded by participating in any ensemble he could, from the drum line to the pit orchestra, even winning the local solo & ensemble competition on timpani. He continued to study music in college where he was exposed to composition and music theory. Today Alex continues to share his passion by making a career in music as a performer and teacher. He loves the unique opportunity teaching gives to inspire both children and adults to discover themselves through music.

Whether a beginner or an advanced musician, I love working with students of any age and skill level. I tailor each lesson to specifically fit the student’s skills and interests, making sure that they are not only progressing but enjoying the process of making music.

About Taylor
I'm a video game composer who loves working with students of any age and skill level, whether they are beginning to compose for the first time or have been composing for years. Getting people started composing and watching them discover that they have a lot to say through music, is such a joy of mine. I tailor each lesson to specifically fit the student’s skills and interests, making sure that they are not only progressing but enjoying the process of making music.

My students have gone on to record their music in the Netherlands, write a musical that was performed at their college, write a song for their middle school talent show, score a short film - and much more!

With me, students can learn:

• Composition (any style: jazz, classical, pop – you name it, we can do it!)
• Composing for film, T.V. and video games
• How to us
e music composition software (Logic, Digital Performer, Cubase, Studio One, Pro Tools, Ableton etc.)
• Music theory
• Songwriting
• Music production
• How to use music notation software (write out your parts, charts, lead sheets etc. so that others can play your original compositions)
• Classical percussion techniques

Students can expect to have a lot of fun learning with me! We can write soundtracks, band pieces, solo pieces - whatever the student finds most interesting.

Nationally and internationally touring/teaching drummer with 10+ years experience on the drum kit. Everyone has specific needs and wants with drumming, and I would love to help you achieve your drumming goal! I believe that the most important part of learning how to drum is learning how to really listen, so I tailor most of my lessons around those. I can teach more formal disciplines like rhythm reading and rudiments, as well. Send me a message and let's see if we can work something out!

About Andrew
I am a drummer with 10+ years experience touring nationally and internationally, recording albums, and teaching drums. I have played with Kings Kaleidoscope, Emery, Propaganda, and more. I specialize in rock and hip-hop drumming, but I love to bounce around and I know other styles as well! I really believe in the importance of listening, dynamics, feel, and playing with other people, so that is what I prioritize in my lessons. However, if you want to learn rhythm reading, rudiments, and other formal disciplines I can teach you that as well! Feel free to send me a message and lets see if we can work something out.

Learn a variety of percussion and drum styles with an emphasis on fundamental technique, time/rhythm, and musical expression!

About Taylor
Hi!

My name is Taylor and welcome to my teacher bio. I'm a passionate drummer/percussionist with a diverse teaching and performance background. I have a degree from The Cleveland Institute of Music in Timpani/Percussion where I studied mostly classical music. However, I have played and studied drum set for the last 15 years in addition to my classical studies. I'm always looking for new styles of music to immerse myself in!

As an educator, I have a diverse background. I have experience in the public school system teaching at The Cleveland School of the Arts, an alternative public school for artistically gifted students in the Cleveland, Ohio Metropolitan School District. Additionally, I am a drum/percussion instructor at Hunterdon Preparatory School, an alternative public School in Annandale, New Jersey. I have marching band
experience, both as an adjunct instructor and as a drumline director. Lastly, I have seven years of private lesson instruction experience teaching students of all kinds and all ability levels including beginners as young as five years old, mentally disabled students, and intermediate-advanced adults.

I pride myself on my flexibility as an educator. All students are different and all students learn differently, and I hope we can find out what works best for you to meet your musical goals.

I look forward to meting you!

I have a background in fundamental rhythm, rather than teaching the student to simply play, I teach them to read and write their own rhythms and drum beats in a fun and hands-on manner using methods that music teachers around the country use in their classrooms. Furthermore, I have years of experience teaching children as young as 4 years old from their very first lesson. I’ve developed my own method for children to read drum music using simple and an easy to understand rhythmic language.

About Trevor
My name is Trevor and I’m excited to help you learn to play drums and percussion. I have over 12+ years of experience playing and 5 years teaching. I hold a Bachelors in Music Business with a focus on percussion and drum set. I’ve taught students from ages 4 to 50 and I enjoy giving every person the opportunity to pick up some sticks and learn. I’ve played styles from jazz to heavy rock, orchestral to country and everything in between, there’s no style that I’m uncomfortable teaching. I look forward to meeting you and having fun while learning the fundamentals of rhythm, drums, and percussion.

Hi I'm Michael Cangelosi, an instructor in Covington LA. Im a young up and coming musician who has been playing the drums for over fifteen years now and who would love the opportunity to share my knowledge with anyone who shares my passion either as a fun hobby or potential career. Following my program, My students should see growth in all aspects of what makes a drummer a drummer, and have a blast doing it, just as I have these many years!

About Michael
I am a proffessional musian and have had a love for the drums since the day I was born. I personally started my lessons young and have been hooked for the past fifteen years. It didnt take me long to realize that my passion extended farther than just my personal growth, but also a strong desire to bring the gift of music to others. I am and always will be a very patient teacher. I understand that each student will have different needs and different desires for where these lessons will lead them. I personally for example was a very slow learner when I had first begun my own lessons, so I can relate to those who do not learn as quickly as others. But I truly hope that all of my students will be able to use the knowledge from my lessons to better themselves as people and musicians.
