About Edwin
Hello! Thank you for your interest in taking guitar/piano/music lessons.

I am a professional teacher/studio musician/performer/producer with over 17 years of private teaching experience and a graduate of the University of Miami Studio Music and Jazz program in 2002 specializing in the guitar.

I am available to teach guitar(acoustic, electric, classical) for all levels, ages, and styles(pop to folk, rock to soul, world to classical) in English, Spanish and Japanese.

Other subjects taught include bass guitar, piano/keyboard, ukulele, banjo, mandolin, harmonium, classical percussion, music theory, composition(all styles from pop to classical), ear training, and studio production/engineering/mixing.

Born in Cali, Colombia on April 1979, I began my musical endeavors studying the piano at the age of 6. Early on I had the opportunit
y to play percussion in the school symphony while at the same time developed an intense interest in the instrument that would become my true love, the guitar.

During 1996-98 I studied jazz guitar at the New World School of the Arts music program under the direction of J.B. Dyas and Dr. Roby George. Upon graduation, I was immediately accepted to the University of Miami jazz guitar program under the direction of Randall Dollahan. It was during this time that I also refined my skills as a classical guitarist and as a composer/arranger. In addition, I began passing my knowledge onto friends and eventually began working as a teacher.

My ability to play almost any genre of music is the fruit of past experience playing with an impressive variety of music groups, including jazz combos, symphony orchestras, Andean world music ensembles, and several rock and pop groups as well. As a studio guitarist I have recorded for various artists including Jaci Velasquez, Carlos Ponce, Alexandre Pires, and Noelia.

Every one of you is unique and there are many possible paths to reach your goals in music.

With my background and music industry experience, I am able to customize my lessons for you so that you can reach your desired goals. We will take some time to find out where your passion lies in music and I will use my experience and knowledge to create a customized lesson-plan that will allow us to focus on reaching your desired goals and at the same time maintain a well rounded music education.

I find this to be key in making the lessons and your practice sessions very enjoyable, fun and laid back - knowing that everything we practice, play and talk about is in line with your goals as a student.

I will also be playing along with you and demonstrating everything that we're working on - music is meant to be shared and played with others and it is important to have that experience of interaction from early on in your lessons.

So whether it's learning to accompany yourself or others, write songs, read music, understand harmony, solo, or just jam out to your favorite songs, you will be well on your way to reaching your goals within 6 months of my lessons.

Look forward to making music with you!

Award-Winning Teacher - Networked/played with members of Heart, Bad Company & Queensryche. Learn Your Favorite Songs Quickly & Accurately.

Percussion is one of my specialties.

Beginning to Intermediate Percussion lessons and beats that are actually used in today's and yesteryear's "hit songs".

It's no secret, percussion is the backbone or "foundation" to
any hit song.

I break down percussion to its most basic rudiments so that
you will grow by leaps and bounds instead of just crawling
along.

You have to walk before you can run so getting it right initially is very important to moving forward and getting you playing your favorite songs quickly and accurately..

About Matthew
Hi.. My name is Matt. I'm a very energetic, friendly, understanding & passionate music coach who has worked with students & clientele throughout the US. Possessing more than 25 years of music training & music industry experience, I've been able to take people's Playing to amazing levels.

In my musical travels I've networked or shared the stage with many famous NW music legends:
1.) Roger Fisher- Heart-2013 Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame Inductee
2.) Lynn Sorensen- Paul Rogers/Bad Co/KZOK's Spike & Impalers
3.) Donny Evola - Geoff Tate/Former Queensryche/Foghat
4.) Jeff Kathan- Paul Rogers/Bad Company/Montrose
5.) Doug Mcgrew- Geoff Tate/Former Queensryche Singer/Operation Mindcrime
6.) Update - For the last year I have been playing off and on with Rudy Parris from NBC TV's "The Voice". Season 3 - Team Blake. He is an incredible music
ian and I'm proud to call him and his manager my friends. His new album coming out is nothing short of amazing.

In fact everyone I've mentioned above are pro all the way and great guys as well. I"m honored to have played with them.

I challenge my students to view music more than just as a "skill", but also a tool to communicate effectively and to combat life's obstacles.

I have had many guitar teachers myself including one true Famous Rock Star legend here in Pacific NW. Congrats Rog. U Earned It, & inspire myself, & others everyday.

You got to know the rules 1st, before you can then break the rules. This is how you develop your own unique style. And it's what separates the Pro Players from the rest of the pack.

But even if you don't want to play professionally, maybe you just want to learn a few chords, licks, songs, for yourself, or to impress friends. That's okay too!

I welcome every level and style. I always learn something from my students.
That's what music is all about. Learning & trading tips and licks from other musicians.

Bottom Line Is... I can help you learn and progress on your instrument faster...

Let me be the Music Coach to get you there!

Good assessment of child's starting point. Wonderfully enthusiastic and knowledgeable. Great introduction into drum kit (we called it drum set in my day). At that point, needed to slow down and give child more fundamental practice time to soak in the concepts before racing on.

If you are looking for someone to teach bass by reading of sheet music, stop now and get back some of your precocious tim.

Matt teaches how you how to play by ear. I have yet to see a chord chart or any sheet music. He emphasizes timing, counting and not getting in the way of the train. if you want to become a musician who can sit in with others, have a good time playing, be ready for the stage, this is the place.

I gave this instructor two of my five lesson slots to see if perhaps the first lesson was just an off day. In lessons in the past I've been set up with some structure and learning materials. During these lessons, it was mostly just listening to a song on youtube to try to get the main basic components of this song. No sheet music, just a name of a chord (aka Em 7) that I kept trying to get the instructor to explain but to no avail. I asked if he could slow down and go over the first part so I could understand before moving onto another concept but I just got a "you'll get there, you'll figure it out". For the second lesson, he had a print out of guitar chords (I was there for piano lessons) but it was for a song I know and love so figured I could figure it out but again, it was too fast paced and when I asked to slow down for understanding of one part before moving to the next I was met with more "you'll get there". At the end of the lesson, he had me take a picture of the printed out guitar chords with lyrics....its was on a piece of printer paper and I couldn't even take that home? For $70 an hour I would at least like a piece of printer paper so I don't have to hold my phone with one hand while I play with the other. Chalk it up to a difference in teaching and learning style if you like but I felt like these lessons were chaotic and that I was asking for my learning needs to be met and they were not.

I can help students who are wanting to be in marching band and symphonic/orchestra. I have hand drums and various auxiliary percussion instruments, including tambourines, triangle, shakers, maracas, claves, a cabasa, etc. I also have a xylophone for students who want to learn mallet instruments, and I am well familiar with both the Burton and Stevens grips. I can help those who are wishing to compete in band contests, as well.

About Tracy
I have been playing the drum set in various bands since 2001. I have also been playing with the OKC Community Orchestra since 2009. I have played in symphonic and jazz bands and a percussion ensemble. I have taught a percussion class, private lessons, and I have been a full time music teacher in the OKC district. I have recorded in the studio also, and I enjoy doing a bit of my own production. Rocking on stage is my favorite activity! I can teach you how to be an integral part of a band and play along to your favorites. I enjoy bringing out the best in a student and teaching to his/her strengths. Let's run!

*** Lesson Details ***
I am a very easygoing and patient teacher. I fully understand that the drum set requires a high level of coordination, and I am mindful of this while working with students. I will begin with proper gr
ip and stroke technique as well as the use of a metronome. I will teach the student to read rhythms and drum set notation. I know how to isolate difficult patterns, break them down into understandable parts, and reintegrate them into a piece. I like to use the music that a student enjoys to relate to the written music. I have found YouTube to be an indispensable tool for this, and my students have responded very well. I will work on snare drum technique as well, because it is the primary voice on the set, and the touch and nuance required to play it well relate to the set as well. I will tailor my instruction to suit the student's learning style and preferences. I want to make the learning fun, so I will help the student quickly gain the basic skills to play along with their favorite bands. This promotes musicality as well as solid time. It will also aid in transcription, which will come with development and is a valuable tool. I will use this in tandem with technique-building exercises to form a well rounded musician. I believe that a student should have a familiarity with his/her instrument, so we will also go over the anatomy and tuning of the set. Above all, music should be fun!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Music room w/ drum set, hand drums, and seating for parents

*** Travel Equipment ***
I have a practice pad, snare drum, and sticks. If a student wishes to have drum set lessons in his/her home, that instrument should be there.
**Please note** I do have a drum set in my home.

*** Specialties ***
For the drum set, I am the most experienced in rock, country, and bluegrass styles. I am comfortable with both Stevens and Burton grips for mallet instruments.

I want to make sure my students have a good time learning percussion but I also want to make sure they learn a lot..! I always make sure to ask my students what they want to learn and what their favorite music is... after that, I figure out what type of lessons to plan out.

About Emerson
Thanks so much for your interest in starting music lessons with me. I’m so excited to share my passion for music with you! As Lao Tzu said: “Music in the soul can be heard by the universe."

Lesson details:
My main goal as a teacher is to help my students reach their goals. If my student wants to learn how to play rock, hip-hop, and jazz drums I believe that it's my job to teach them how to play those styles..! If my student wants to get accepted into a music school I will make sure that they are prepared for an audition whether it be for orchestral percussion, jazz drums, rock drums, etc.

What students should have:
All students should (but don't have to) have a 3-ring binder to organize handouts in...!

Things that drum students should have: A drum set, drum sticks, a drum pad, and a music stand.

Recommended
books for a beginning drum student:
Fundamentals for Snare Drum by Garwood Whaley
Elementary Snare Drum by Mitchell Peters
Encyclopedia for Reading Rhythms by Gary Hess

Things that guitar students should have: A guitar, a guitar tuner, and a music stand.

Recommended book: Hal Leonard Guitar Method (Complete Edition) by Schmid and Koch.

My specialties:

Drum specialties: Jazz, Latin (Brazilian, Cuban), African, Rock, Funk, Metal, Pop, Hip-hop, R&B, Blues, Country, Reggae, and Marching. I am proficient in drum reading, drum transcription, practice techniques, and drum rudiments and their application on the drum set.

Orchestral percussion specialties: keyboard percussion (marimba, xylophone, glockenspiel, vibraphone, chimes), snare drum, timpani, bass drum, cymbals, tambourine, triangle, orchestral excerpts, etudes, technique, important literature, and practice techniques.

Guitar specialties: reading music, tablature, chords, scales, improvisation, and technique.

Emerson is an amazing instructor. Besides being a very knowledgeable and gifted musician, he’s patient, kind, and makes learning the drums fun. What I appreciate most about Emerson is that he’s interested in helping me reach my goals. I happen to be interested in learning Latin style drums and lucky for me, Latin is one (of many) of Emerson’s specialties. So many people have told me that Latin is hard to learn, but in four short lessons, I already know how to play a basic Bossa Nova beat. Emerson is a very organized and efficient instructor. We work with handouts, video (I record him as he instructs) and reading exercises from a book. A highlight for me in our sessions is when Emerson accompanies my drum playing with another instrument, the piano for example. I really get the feeling like we’re having a little jam session and it's fun because I can hear that I'm making music and that's an awesome feeling.

Choose Emerson as your music instructor and you will not be disappointed.

About Brett
MUSIC INSTRUCTION AND
ENJOYMENT OFFERED. Very enthusiastic and
experienced musician available for instruction offering the following:

# In-depth written music theory coupled with an equivalent of ear training and tone
recognition

# Introduction to performance skills with instruments that include:

Guitar - electric & acoustic
Drum Kit and percussion rhythms
Piano/Keyboard

# Group lessons or private instruction, depending on personal preferences and age
groups

Personal
experience includes:

1) 15 years of GUITAR: professional performance
and composition. Styles include rock, folk, blues, chord
progressions, and alternate tuning.

2) 15 years of DRUMS and PERCUSSION: Latin, swing, blues, as well as rock, funk, punk, and reduced to
p forty beats.

3) 15 years of PIANO: which utilize
several years of personal instruction in classical, popular, and some ragtime,
in addition to an intimate knowledge of Piano Proficiency (scales & modes,
chord structures & inversions, common chord progressions, intervals, circle
of 5th, and finger exercises)

4) 2 years of MUSIC THEORY and COMPOSITION at college level.

Lessons will include additional materials to the primary instrument such as sheet music for
sight reading, rhythm patterns, tabletures, and chord charts.

***Above all, I encourage students to select those pieces, tunes, or songs that have appealed to them the most; perhaps even inspiring them to learn a musical instrument in the first place. Adaptations are a common and enjoyable part of the teaching process.

*** Lesson Details ***
Expect efforts, on my part, to steer learning into areas of the students particular interest as well as conventional genres such as classical, popular, folk, blues, etc...

Moreover, I rely on ear training as a strong complement to written music theory and sight-reading; often using recorded music samples or simple patterns on a piano.

I try to balance method-type published lesson books with beginner, intermediate, or original composition sheet music to specifically selected pieces.

Ideally, with a reasonable practice schedule each week, full comprehension of the written music grand staff and an ear to catch a false note will become second nature. By then, more opportunities to learn actual pieces and styles become greater, having got the initial learning curve under the students belt.

*** Studio Equipment ***
*snare drum
*electronic keyboard/piano

*** Travel Equipment ***
lesson material/music media samples can be provided for copy

I'm into my second month of weekly guitar lessons with Brett and can't believe how well I am playing already!! I've had some basic guitar lessons in the past but still very much a beginner. Brett knew precisely where to start and what I needed next to advance my playing, and broke it down into attainable steps. So far I've learned a good handful of strum patterns; I can finally play two songs pretty well and sing along; and I am in the rudimentary stage of learning to finger pick. Really love the fact that beautiful sounds are coming from my instrument! Highly recommend if you're ready to make the commitment to becoming a capable player.

What a terrible experience. I signed up for lessons for my wife from Brett as a gift because he listed times that would work for my wife given that we have a young daughter, and have a hard time making time for lessons. Brett told us 3 days before the lesson that the time wouldn't work, then simply never showed for the rescheduled first lesson. Worse, he simply refused to do scheduling via email (he would leave voicemails and failed to return my wife's call when she called back as they were playing phone tag), and then told us he had another commitment during the slot we had supposedly reserved for him. Worse, he failed to update the site as he continually cancelled lessons and never showed up for scheduled times. I now have a huge hassle of getting a refund on the money I paid for lessons as opposed to a lovely gift for my wife. Life's too short and we're too busy for such an awful experience.

In our percussion class we will cover music theory, counting rhythms and discover a variety of percussion. The majority of this lesson will revolve around the Cajon, Shaker, Tamborine, and using brushes and snare technique and will explore african drums as well!

Bring your hacky sack and get ready for the drum circle. This class is perfect for groups and couples. Feel free to use the "ask a question" feature if you have any questions about this class or it's outline!

About Rachel
I started my musical path in a Ballet Studio. I fell in love with the crackle of the vinyl record playing as I learned to listen and dance with the rhythm.

I started playing the guitar when I was in elementary and took classical lessons until I was a teenager.I really enjoy the art of practice and the journey of patience. The process of learning has helped me carve out and cultivate my style of music. It's opened up a lot of doors for me in my life. I've had the honor to play with a lot of great performers and have been lucky enough to tour the U.S. and Canada with festivals and showcases such as Vans Warped Tour, South By Southwest and the Halifax Pop Explosion.I've been the opening act for Carolyn Wonderland, Maria Taylor, Tsunami Bomb, Tilly and the Wall, Basia Bulat, Rise Against, Strike Anywhere. Anathallo, Cursive, Milton Hopki
ns, and Pony Up.

When I have free time I volunteer with the Houston Chapter of Girls Rock Camp to help teach girls empowerment through songwriting and music.

I began teaching as an afterschool job when I was 16. I was homeschooled, so I feel that the experience taught me that everyone learns differently and that there is not just one standardized method to playing music.

My teaching style varies with each student, but the one constant is my ability to make each and every client I encounter completely fall in LOVE with music. It's my super power.

Lesson plans are tailored for your specific needs and to help you achieve your musical goals and aspirations at your desired pace. I enjoy my students and making music with them.

Here is an overview of the lessons that I provide.

Guitar:
Finger Picking, Song Writing, Rhythm, Lead, Scales,Modes & Ear Training.

Songwriting and composition: Learn techniques, how to brain storm and plot your musical story line. This class pairs great with vocal lessons or guitar lessons.

Rachel is the best guitar teacher I have ever had...period...EVER! Her easy going method allows me to learn just enough as a beginner to enjoy and then move on to the next lesson. We are not concerned with learning lengthy songs or long, drawn, out scales as I am only a beginner! But at the same time we are not learning row-row-row-your boat. I am learning chords, arpeggios, hammer-ons, lite theory, and all at a very short easy pace which is what I want. Five stars for her as a teacher by far!!!

David explains things in a manner that I could easily understand. He was calm, patient, and respectful of skill level.

Awesome teacher! Not just a great drummer, but patient and articulate. He was really able to help me understand and execute in ways I never could before. Seems like he would also be great with kids...super patient and encouraging!

David is a very skilled drummer and a very enthusiastic teacher. In lessons, he seems to like to split time between practicing rudiments and learning to play different rhythms on the set. He is also exceptionally patient and supportive with my 9-year-old, highly distractible daughter. David is very positive, pointing out things that are going well and interesting rhythms that they discover. I am really glad we found David--he is an excellent teacher and I love watching my daughter learn so much about music!

Percussion is so much more than drums. If you are wanting a comprehensive beginners guide to playing percussion. I can help you with posture, sticking, and giving you the fundamentals needed to have an awesome start to your percussion playing. These skills transfer to all percussion instruments, including drum set. I would recommend finding a percussion teacher who plays percussion primarily.

About Matthew
Hi, I am Matt Shewmaker. I am a band director in the Fort Smith, AR area. I am in my 7th year teaching band and love every minute of it. I have recently decided to return to teaching private lessons, and would love to help you with your auditions, festival music, AP music theory exams, or just learn some skills on becoming a better musician. Outside of the audition music, we continually work tone production, range, and confidence on any brass instrument. In college I had a small guitar studio as well. Some of those guitar students have gone on to study at the collegiate level and gig around town today! I am comfortable teaching at all levels, but my expertise is centered around student development at the middle school to high school level.

June 2012 - June 2015 I was the head band director of Waldron High School. We won several awards
through our marching and concert band program. I also ran after school lessons in which many students made our region honor band.

June 2015 - Present
I am currently the head director at Trinity Junior High in Fort Smith. I run a 7-9 band program that includes both marching and concert band seasons. Our student involvement is quite high as our band program serves about 50% of our total student population.

Whether a beginner or an advanced musician, I love working with students of any age and skill level! I tailor each lesson to specifically fit the student’s skills and interests, making sure that they are not only progressing but enjoying the process of making music.

About Taylor
I'm a video game composer who loves working with students of any age and skill level, whether they are beginning to compose for the first time or have been composing for years. Getting people started composing and watching them discover that they have a lot to say through music, is such a joy of mine! I tailor each lesson to specifically fit the student’s skills and interests, making sure that they are not only progressing but enjoying the process of making music.

With me, students can learn:

- Composition (any style: jazz, classical, pop – you name it, we can do it!)
- Composing for film, T.V. and video games
- How to use music composition software (Logic, Digital Performer, Cubase, Studio One, Pro Tools, Ableton etc.)
- Music theory
- Songwriting
- Music production
- How to use music notation
software (write out your parts, charts, lead sheets etc. so that others can play your original compositions)
- Classical percussion techniques

Students can expect to have a lot of fun learning with me! We can write soundtracks, band pieces, solo pieces - whatever the student finds most interesting. :)

BIO:
I’m a composer who currently lives in Bellvue, Washington. I started my music career when I was 9 years old playing the Zimbabwean marimba and mbira (a traditional Shona thumb piano). Not only are the instruments beautiful, but they express our connection to the world around us. I completely fell in love with the polyrhythms and melodies of Zimbabwean music!

I continued to pursue my passion for music by studying percussion and composition at The Boston Conservatory of Music… then completed my M.M. in Scoring for Film, Television, and Video Games at The Berklee College of Music in Valencia, Spain.

Now I write music for video games and help our stories unfold.

I've been working with Taylor for several months now and have enjoyed it very much! She has been helping me with Cubase and composition. Musicians need to collaborate and share ideas and I'm grateful I've had the opportunity to do that with her. She is well organized, easy to get along with, and has an impressive background. I would highly recommend her for your next project or if you're new to DAW's.

Working with Taylor has been one of the best investments I have made for my personal development in the musical world. She has helped compose music for a play, has helped keep me calm when I feel like I am overwhelmed or overthinking my objectives and keeps me leveled. We have also worked on analyzing scores from classical to modern. I highly recommend her if not just for her knowledge/skills, but her great sense of humor as well (makes the lessons even more enjoyable). Thanks Taylor, you’re the best.

I was very pleased that Taylor offered Skype lessons, but I was a bit worried whether I could learn in this format or not. To my surprise, it was exceptionally easy and rewarding! Currently, Taylor and I are working on a piece that I am composing for my short film. Of course, as a newbie, I knew nothing about Apple’s Logic Pro X when I began, but Taylor took her time to explain just how the software worked, as well as the techniques I needed for scoring my film. I highly recommend Taylor and the very convenient Skype format! You won’t be disappointed.
