Hi, I perform professionally with Cascade Chamber Orchestra (classical) and Mango Nights (World Music and Jazz). I've been teaching all the strings for about 20 years. In the first few lessons students learn how to get get big, beautiful tone by learning various bowing techniques that are easy to learn with a little daily practice.

Then I teach how to read music and play songs in a variety of styles: Gypsy, classical, bluegrass, contemporary classical, rock and more. The album I use for this is a beginning book called VIP Strings composed by my mentor Dr. Lyons. The book comes with a play along piano accompaniment CD that makes practicing fun! Along with this I teach music fundamentals like scales, music theory and ear training.

For more serious students, I use materials from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music and prepare them for one to two exams a year. The exams test playing abilities on 3 songs plus scales, arpeggios, ear training and music theory. ...

For more serious students, I use materials from the Associated Board of the
Royal Schools of Music and prepare them for one to two exams a year. The exams test playing abilities on 3 songs plus scales, arpeggios, ear training and music theory. Students that pass get a beautiful certificate for each level, grades 1 to 8.

I earned my music degree from Portland State University in 2006, graduating with honors. In 1996 I won two Medals of Distinction for violin performance and music theory and then in 2001 I received a Merit Award from the Associated Board of the Royal School of Music, London, England for viola performance. I've been blessed to be able to perform in a variety of ensembles and genres such as musical theater pit orchestras, string quartets, the Vancouver Symphony, and rock, jazz, tango, Middle Eastern and blue grass/folk bands.

My biggest thrill is to be able to transmit culture to the younger generation through music.

*** Lesson Details ***
I offer the following for my violin, viola, cello, bass and piano students. Most of all, it is the joy of music making that I want to share with my students.

Private and group lessons
Two recitals a year
Special performance opportunities throughout the year
Classical, jazz, fiddle, rock, tango, sacred, Celtic, folk
Music theory
Customized lesson plans using various methods old and new

I endeavor to provide a fun, non intimidating environment for students while motivating them to achieve their highest potential by providing many performance opportunities throughout the year. Some of my students have appeared as special guests with my band, Mango Nights.

Included with weekly private lessons are once a month group lessons where students can learn essential ensemble skills and have fun meeting other students.

Beginning students learn several simple songs that teach great tone and rhythm using classical, folk, blues, rock, ragtime, bluegrass. Students learn concepts such as syncopation, rhythm, note reading, articulations, dynamics, asymmetrical time meters and and more. Each book comes with a CD with piano accompaniment which makes practicing at home enjoyable.

Students are gradually introduced to scales, arpeggios, music theory, ear training and sight reading. All this works together to produce "the complete musician". The complete musician is a person who has excellent rhythm, pitch, note reading skills and creativity, a person who can enjoy and appreciate music in it's various forms over a lifetime whether it be for personal enjoyment or as a career.

For more serious students who have the goal of auditioning for university scholarships, top youth orchestras or becoming a professional musician, an accelerated intensive course is available in partnership with the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music. In this program, the student is prepared for a once a year rigorous exam requiring the playing of select pieces, scales and arpeggios, sight reading and ear training. The candidate performs for the visiting Associated Board Examiner from London England and is graded on a point system. Upon passing the student receives a beautiful certificate and additional awards for high scores. Once a year at a separate time, a written exam for music theory is taken. The exams are graded 1 to 8 and can be classical or jazz depending on the candidate's choice.

Emphasizing intonation and tone production while maintaining proper posture from day 1. I will help you build a foundation of skills on the violin to play whatever music you desire from Suzuki, to Country, to Rock. Or help apply what you know already to play a different kind of music.

About Jon
Out of all instruments, the sound of the violin is the closest to the human voice. Small wonder it is one of the oldest instruments still being played and it's tones can fit in to almost any style of music.

Learning the violin from me can include violin fundamentals such as bow use and finger placement, reading music notation, lead sheets, and playing by ear. All of these are skills that come into play at different times depending on what your goals are. A combination of these skills will give you a foundation of music knowledge that will serve you regardless of what style of music you want to play. Specific styles I've worked with are: Classical, Irish, Bluegrass, Rock and Symphonic Metal.

I tailor lessons to my students goals. I emphasize technique fundamentals, and help students apply the techniques they learn toward music t
hey enjoy playing, or composing.

In addition to playing violin, I write and arrange music. My song "The Burning Plain" won a national award for songwriting. If writing songs is your goal I can help you apply music theory concepts is ways that will make your songs stand out.

I believe that students can only learn properly in the right atmosphere, with an enthusiastic, motivated instructor. If the experience is not fun the student will not excel in what they do. I believe the students should periodically have a chance to show what they are learning by performing in recitals with others.

About Jack
I started taking Violin and Piano lessons at age 7. By the age of 12 I was performing recitals and was Concert Master of my elementary school orchestra. In high school I was first chair, and learned to conduct the orchestra. I attended Southwest Missouri State College in Springfield Missouri. I created my own string quartet while studying there. I studied Violin under Mr. Harold King, who was a good friend of Jascha Heifetz and was his roommate in Chicago where they studied music together. I have studied Violin and Piano with many other instructors, including Tony Bennet and Peggy Lee's recording pianist. I studied modern and jazz piano with Paul Horn's Jazz Group. I was vocal coach for 3 years for the Pasadena, California Ambassador choir.I have taught for approx. 50 years privately and in various colleges and schools. I was a co-founder
and owner of Pasadena School of music in Pasadena California . I was an instructor for Beacock Music in Vancouver, Washington. I have been a member or the Clark College Orchestra and have performed in several concerts with them.I currently perform all over Oregon and Washington, and perform weekly for various functions in the area.

JACK IS TERRIFIC!

I wish we had found Jack years ago. We hired Jack specifically to help my daughter prepare for an audition. The audition was a success! Jack's approach to teaching is no nonsense and precise, but he has a warm and gentle way about him that motivated my daughter in a way that others haven't. Aside from his teaching ability, I was pleasantly surprised with Jack's sense of urgency and flexibility in responding to special scheduling needs. This is the first time I have been inspired to write an on-line testimony. I hope it helps other students discover Jack's tutoring.

Typically, I use the Suzuki and Strictly Strings books for beginner students, and I will then advance to etude studies such as Wolfarht and Sevick in addition to the Suzuki sequels for my intermediate students. Lastly, I will add Introducing the Positions, Mazas, Josephine Trott Double Stops, and solo concertos to my advanced students.

About Elicia
I began violin lessons at age five, and was requested by the youth conductor to join the Palm Beach Youth Symphony a year later. For eight consecutive years, I performed with many other youth orchestras and served as concert mistress several times. At the age of thirteen, I auditioned for and joined The Venice Symphony during the 2004-2005 season and was a part of their ensemble for seven consecutive seasons, including the position as assistant principal. In addition to the Venice Symphony, I have also performed with the Sarasota Pops for two seasons, The South Shore Symphony Orchestra as assistant concert mistress and as concert mistress, and Anna Maria Island Concert Chorus and Orchestra. Recently, I relocated to the South Philly and performed with the Delaware County Symphony in Aston, PA, and the Rose Tree Pops located in Media, PA fo
r a ouple of years. Over the years I have had performing experience with violin duets and trios with a classical guitarist on a number of occasions for weddings, Christmas shows, and restaurant events. Some of my performance venues include the 800 Bay Restaurant and Club, the Four Seasons, the Sugarhouse Casino, and the Pyramid Club.

In addition to my musical career, I am also heavily training in the sport of ice dancing. Currently, my brother and ice dance partner, Stephen, and I are 3 time national competitors at the championship level with plans to compete internationally. Through my experience as a performer both in music and on the ice, I can give to each student not only the ability to create music through the violin, but also the mental ability to handle performing and competitive atmospheres.

*** Lesson Details ***
My lessons offer an extensive education in technique, musicality, music theory, and most importantly, effective practice methods that increase capability and skill rapidly. I tailor my lessons specifically according to the student's abilities and strengths, while incorporating a warm and inviting atmosphere.

After a few months, my students acquire a well rounded knowledge and feel for the violin and classical music and appreciate the art and beauty music brings to life. They are always strongly impacted and inspired to pursue and achieve higher goals and activities.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I have a living room with a grand piano, two music stands, and seating for parents.

*** Travel Equipment ***
My violin, a music stand, extra music, fingerboard tape, a metronome, stickers, and a tuner. I will expect my student to have his own violin and bow, a case, a shoulder rest, and music, music stand (can be portable), and a notebook for recording lesson assignments and corrections.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in classical violin, and I have worked with the Suzuki Method, but I am also very open to other methods and schools.

I have been taking online violin lessons with Elicia for two years. I am a full-time phd student, hoping to learn violin in the very limited time I have. I started with almost no background in music and after 40 lessons or so, we managed to get through Sukuzi book 1, the first half of book 2 and a few pieces from Wolfhart. I am grateful for her help in making progress, not only in the sense of being able to play more pieces, but also of cultivating good habits.
I enjoy learning violin with Elicia and highly recommend her as a violin teacher. She is very good at communicating ideas, and I’ve always found her instructions very descriptive and helpful. I would also attribute it to a good understanding of the learning process, since she is often able to anticipate the issues I might have and to make suggestions accordingly.

I teach the Suzuki method, but I also like to incorporate different styles of violin music as well, including fiddling and Celtic. I also teach music theory and how to read music. After the first lesson, I'll come up with a customized lesson plan to keep you or your child engaged and inspired to keep playing!

About Megan
I am originally from North Carolina and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. I have been involved in music, theatre and dance since the age of 3. I also have worked with various professional children's theatre companies and run my own touring theatre company. I have been a Zumba instructor since 2011 and I have been a swimming instructor/lifeguard since 2003.

*** Lesson Details ***
I believe that learning anything new should be a fun experience. If it's not fun then you're more likely to get frustrated and quit. My teaching philosophy is that I want to know what inspires you and create lessons that will keep you or your children interested and having fun. I offer 30 and 45 minute lessons. During the first lesson we will figure out a personalized lesson and go from there.

*** Travel Equipment ***
For
violin students I expect them to have a proper size violin, shoulder rest and bow.
For beginner piano students you should have at least a 61 key keyboard, but an 88 keyboard piano is preferred.

*** Specialties ***
I'm very personable, very communicative and I work well with all ages.

Before switching to primarily playing viola, I trained and performed as a violinist for ten years and graduated from the Suzuki Violin Method. I now play violin as my secondary instrument.

My teaching style is inspired by my initial training in the Suzuki method, and my studies with violist and pedagogue Karen Ritscher at Oberlin Conservatory. Please note, I have not yet received training as a Suzuki teacher and use the Suzuki method books and the teaching I received as a Suzuki student as a jumping off point for working on each student's individual needs.

About Grace
I studied viola at Oberlin Conservatory of Music and moved to Portland three years ago to pursue performance and teaching opportunities. Since then I have performed with Classical Revolution PDX, Cascadia Composers and ARCO PDX and am a member of Macaulay Balkan.

My initial studies were on violin using the Suzuki method, which has greatly influenced my teaching approach. However, I am dedicated to customizing the lesson time and structure to the needs and priorities of my students.

*** Specialties ***
Very few "viola teachers" play viola as their primary instrument. As a full-time violist, I can help you learn how to play this idiosyncratic instrument from my own experience.

Grace is excellent! I feel extremely lucky to have her as my violin teacher. I was playing better after just one lesson with her.

Before I found her, I had been turned down by several other teachers on this site because I wanted to learn how to play the violin without having to learn to read music. When I saw Grace's video, I thought surely she would turn me down too, because she's an even better player than the teachers who had said no. I was very surprised and excited when she agreed to teach me. She saw no problem with giving me lessons without reading, which means that not only is she a better musician than the others, but obviously she's a better and more versatile instructor, too.

Like I said, I feel very fortunate. And, as good as she is, I would have expected to pay a lot more for her. I actually WOULD pay more. She'd be worth it! I've looked at dozens of other teachers on this site .. Trust me, she's the best.
