Teaching Philosophy -
My teaching philosophy is built on well rounded communication, explanation and examples. So, that a student can truly understand and learn a topic, surrounded in a very humorous, light and supportive environment. Along with being provided good information, a student learns better and feels more motivated to learn when there is a balance of positive support and confidence building accompanied by constructive criticism and examples/information that can help a student assess what ever walls they may be meeting in their musical growth.
I understand that all students/artists have different goals they wish to achieve. So it is very important to me to accommodate each individuals needs and wants to help them grow in the fields they wish too; However, In that I have played music for a long time, I understand there are certain things that a student may not have been exposed to yet; It is important that while focusing on a students artistic goals they respect and are open to the suggestion and guidance of their teacher.
I truly believe music has an amazing influence on the world and has the ability to change peoples way of thinking. Therefore, I try and keep an open awareness to all music, so that I can understand all different musical languages utilized to communicate to people, and I don't believe I will ever know them all. I hold it to attention to influence my students somewhat similarly so that they can shape the landscape of how we communicate musically in the future.
I also try and be very patient with my students. Knowing that when I feel rushed, it makes information more difficult to comprehend, remember and allocate. I love watching the gears run in my students head, so I try and provide information that pushes a student but is within their abilities.
HUMOR is very important. I like to break people out of their shell by telling a joke and hopefully getting one back, so they feel more comfortable and free. One of a Artists worst enemies are nerves. Keeping things light-hearted and maybe even a little small talk can be very helpful to a students development and growth on a topic. After all, Art is meant to be fun and we should enjoy every moment of it, in fact we should enjoy every moment in life period.
I understand music requires focus and discipline and I have certain expectation of a student to understand that and practice. You can't buy chops, you can't buy music theory etc. you can get help but eventually your the one who must understand it and play it.
I am here to help you. Based on what I know and what I have extensively studied, I will do all that I can to help you achieve your musical goals. I am here to answer your questions and help you grow. I love teaching because I love sharing knowledge; As long as your seek it, it is here for you. Otherwise, I'd still love to hear some jokes.

*** Lesson Details *** I'm very disciplined but am also very light hearted. It's important for me to assess things seriously, so that one can understand a topic or piece of information.
I generate my lessons based on the individuals needs and therefore draw from various curriculums, sources and examples, such as : MI curriculum for ear training, Theory, Single string Technique, Reading, Rhythm guitar, Ted Greenes Chord Chemistry, Berklee Guitar Method, as well as The Real Book, other artist books(Eric Clapton, etc.) The Guitar Players Hand Book, Bach pieces and self developed curriculums, relative to the topic at hand and students personal goals, amongst many others.
-Beginning students within three months of consistent lessons should have the ability to solo and playing chords to songs that they are interested in and songs provided in the lesson along with a basic understanding of the major scale and its relationship to all of the diatonic music.
-intermediate students should have an elevated understanding of scale and chord patters along with the theory that explains modal relationships and use of these concepts.
-Advanced students should learn all of diatonic scale shapes and modes assuming they don't already know them in which case their specifically situation will be assessed
-Professional students I expect to have specific questions therefore where they grow should be largely subjective.
Overall, in a short amount of time on a scale of 1 - 10 I expect to in three months at-least elevate a students musical abilities one full point if not more.

*** Specialties *** As a Musician I try and play as many styles and be proficient in as many as possible and therefore can play most. However, in the fields of blues, jazz, funk, flamenco and Latin I excel.
I can work with you on mallet technique (marimba, xylophone, bells, vibraphone, etc.) and help you learn from classical/orchestral, pop, and jazz literature. I can also assist you with learning orchestral snare drum technique. We can work on learning orchestral repertoire as well. A few of the books I use are the Modern School for Xylophone, Marimba, and Vibraphone (Goldenberg), Modern Method for Tympani (Goodman), and Stick Control (Stone). I earned a Bachelor's Degree in Percussion Performance from the University of Alabama,with Piano as my secondary instrument. I hold a Master's Degree in Percussion Performance from Indiana University, with a Cognate in Jazz Studies. I have taught private percussion, drum set, and piano lessons for over 30 years. I performed for 10 years as a contract percussionist with the Savannah Symphony Orchestra, the Charleston Symphony Orchestra, the Macon Symphony Orchestra, and the Columbus Symphony Orchestra. I have performed in orchestras with accomplished musicians including The Moody Blues (Chastain Park), Judy Collins, and Henry Mancini.
son Details *** I like my students to have some fun while they learn. I ask that you practice 30 minutes a day, so that you can spend your lesson time learning and moving forward. For piano, I use the Alfred series, as well as the Real Book (jazz standards), and of course sheet music for classical pieces and popular tunes. After three months, you will have learned how to play the basic scales and chords, as well as some introductory classical and popular material. On drums after six months, you will know the first thirteen rudiments and some of the basic rock beats, and you will be playing with some rock ballads. After six months on piano, you will be playing all of the major scales and chords and the basic minor chords. You will be playing some Bach and Mozart, and you will start on some basic jazz standards. On drums, you will have learned most of the 26 basic rudiments, and you will be playing along with some medium tempo rock songs. You will have learned some coordinated independence to start playing jazz and swing styles (which by the way are the building blocks for playing R&B and hip-hop). And you'll enjoy the journey! I enjoy seeing my students grow as they learn. I have had students of mine go on to play in the Spirit of Atlanta Drum and Bugle Corps, get advanced music degrees, and become recording artists. The former Percussion Instructor at the University of Alabama was my percussion student. While I know that not everyone seeks to play professionally, you will learn the tools to play well. Stephen has been a great piano teacher. Both my boys take lessons from him and they enjoy it bery much. He is very clear about what they need to learn. His lessons are well planned and he’s flexible with the learning styles of each student. Sometime we even called him and asked questions after the lessons and he’s very generous and nice to have spent the time to explain things to the boys over the phone.

I've been studying piano with Steve for about a year. I could not be happier with my progress. Steve not only tunes right in to my needs but makes the discipline fun. He is a talented musician, and it's obvious he enjoys teaching music. I feel very fortunate to have him as my teacher.

I had my first lesson with Stephen today and he is an awesome teacher. I've been teaching myself for the last couple of years and was very nervous about playing in front of anyone. He made me feel very comfortable and picked up my needs quickly. He's very flexible and patient. I have full confidence that he will take me to the next level of reading, performing and theory. I'm exited to have found Stephen and look forward to my next lesson.
I pretty much teach all common areas of percussion. These include timpani, drum set, marching percussion, mallet percussion, concert percussion, and some world percussion.
Alex was born May 31, 1987. Since both of his parents were band directors, he grew up in a very musically inclined family. When he was 15 years old, during his freshman year of high school, he started studying percussion. A year later he began studying under Chad Kohler and continued to do so until 2009. During spring semester of 2009 he studied briefly under Richard Walker at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI). In the fall of that year he then transferred to Butler University for an academic year and studied under Craig Hetrick and Jon Crabiel.
Beginning in 2011 Alex began studying attending University of Indianapolis and is currently studying under Paul Berns as well as Art Reiner. In addition to studying with them he has also went back to continue to study with his mentor Chad Kohler. In the time since Alex gr
aduated high school, he has been continuously presented with teaching opportunities. At the time, though, music was not looking like the best course of action for him. With the aid of Chad Kohler, Alex then began getting more involved with teaching percussion. Alex eventually went on to arranging his own parts for his students, as well as composing original percussion ensemble pieces. Alex is currently pursuing his Master's Degree in Music Technology at IUPUI.
In the time since he has been out of high school, he has taught at a number of schools including the Lynhurst 7th & 8th Grade Center, North Putnam Jr./Sr. High School, Broad Ripple Magnet School for the Arts & Humanities, and Lawrence Central. He has also taught at Arlington High School and Short Ridge High School.
When it comes to teaching music, what is known to be as the “Holy Trinity” comes to mind. While teaching I personally believe that it is important to challenge students just enough so that they are not discouraged and are still able to have fun.
The Holy Trinity plays a big role in this. What it consists of is embracing your students from all angles. This would be from ensembles and private lessons, which in turn then encourage them to practice. Ensemble, private lessons, and practicing are the three main categories that make up the “Holy Trinity.” And in using this, you can also be more involved with your students as well. It is always a good idea be friend your students as well and not just be the “teacher.” There is a great quote that goes like this, “They will never care about how much you know, until they know how much you care.” In which case has been proven to be very true time and time again.
It is important as a teacher to be able to inspire your students and to encourage them. Which is why I think it is important to be a good friend as well to your students. This way a kind of trust is formed and in turn can easily lead to the success of a music program. Also I do believe that it is important to expose students to as many forms of music as possible. This way they are not just stuck in one kind of mind set and if they choose to go into music for their career, then they have many different experiences they can pull and relate from. Plus they will also have some more knowledge of different cultures and music genres that can help not only create better music but also be more overall worldly in their personal life out side of music. Being able to learn about music is very important, and can easily impact a student’s life in many different ways that most subjects just do not have the capability to. This is what I believe about learning music and why I also love to teach it. I want my students to be able to have all the same great experiences I have had and more. Which is why I personally believe so heavily in a good music education.
*** Lesson Details *** Although the approach to teaching that I use comes across as being pretty laid back, I do expect what some might consider to be a lot out of my students. This is because I want to make sure that my students will be successful as musicians.
While a student is studying with me; they will learn about percussion from multiple angles. They will learn and be able to understand many basic music theory terms and principles. They will also learn how each percussion instrument is tied to one another in technique and how to easily transition from instrument to instrument.
Depending on the age of the student, after about three months of studying with me, the student will know a few major scales, most of the standard American rudiments, and some basic drum set concepts. After 6 months, the student will know all 12 major scales, be familiar with all 40 snare drum rudiments, and know a good portion of basic drum set.
Please keep in mind that results may vary depending on the age of the student and the amount of practicing they do on their own. Results also depend upon whether or not they are practicing correctly, which is something they will also learn how to do with me.
*** Studio Equipment *** In-studio lessons in basement with acoustic drum set. Street parking or drive way. Seating available for parents.
Lessons at the High School will be in the band room with their equipment.

I have been playing music since the age of six. I was raised strictly on classical piano and voice lessons until I picked up the guitar just before the age of ten. By my senior year of high school I had learned how to play bass and drums, was writing and recording my own material, and had formed my own band, which is now called Athanasia. After passing around my demos on the Sunset Strip, I managed to land an audition with the then-forming band Five Finger Death Punch and got the gig on the spot. I played with the band for two years and ultimately earned two gold and one platinum record for my work writing, playing and engineering on their first two albums. As a result I have since been hired by numerous acts worldwide to produce, engineer and mix their records at my studio Nightmare Sound and have gained enough exposure as a musician to
be hired by several bands as a session player on numerous international tours.
I am a professional percussionist.
