Clarissa N.

Los Angeles, CA

I've been writing songs my entire life. As a published songwriter, I have helped many of my piano students over the years become beautiful writers themselves and enjoy the process immensely.

About Clarissa

I studied piano in Germany with Lola Poirier (a student of the famous Alfred Cortot) for 11 years, then with Phillip Evans in New York (professor at the Manhattan School of Music) and finally with world-renowned concert pianist Eugene Liszt at Carnegie-Mellon University, where I received my Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance with a Minor in Child Pedagogy.

For the past twenty eight years I have been teaching students of all levels and ages, incorporating some of my former teachers' methods with my own teaching style. I am passionate about awakening a hunger in each of my students for br
inging and keeping music in their lives forever. I don't look at my students as children who play an instrument, but as young artists on the road to self-discovery and musical fulfillment!
Although many of my students have used their proficiency in piano for college admission and scholarship opportunities, my goal remains to bring their piano playing ability to such an advanced level, that it will become a part of their lives forever.

Along the way I have created strong bonds of friendship with many of my former students, to the point that I feel like they have become a part of my extended family. I am most rewarded when a former student drops by for a visit after completing college to let me know how they are still being positively affected by their continued use of the gift of playing the piano.

*** Lesson Details ***
My objective in the first few months of working with a new student is to teach them all the basics-especially how to read music-so they will be able to get to play the pieces they love as soon as possible. My emphasis is on classical music, but I also teach Popular Music and Broadway Music or anything else the student might prefer.
I use the Michael Aaron Beginner's book together with Note Reviews (my own method of teaching note reading the fast and easy way).
I am very friendly and outgoing- being overly strict doesn't accomplish anything.... but I am progress oriented. My students all practice because they want to move forward and improve and because they enjoy coming to class and performing in my Recitals....which are a wonderful opportunity for them to showcase their talent and accomplishments.

After 3 months many students are just about ready to start on their first real classical piece (such as "Fur Elise' by Beethoven) and by 6 months most are playing original classical pieces by Mozart, Bach and Haydn and Beethoven.

In addition, many of my students enjoy learning contemporary and musical theater pieces, and some even come for audition coaching . I accompany them and help prepare them for their music theater auditions: I teach them how to incorporate their piano training to aid them with their vocal exercises and....having an extended personal background in musical theater myself...give them feedback and insight into the audition process.

*** Specialties ***
My biggest strengths as a teacher are relatability and communication: I am very good at figuring out each of my student's strengths and weaknesses and working with them to bring out their best! Making the lessons fun remains a priority.... as does making sure they learn how to read notes and get exposed to as many pieces as possible so they have a well rounded repertoire.

I love teaching music, it is my greatest passion in life and my students respond in kind by learning quickly and advancing rapidly while enjoying themselves immensely. As is evident by the fact that most of them stay with me for many years most until College some even returning after College to enhance their skills and enrich their repertoire and, because they miss their weekly classes. Some of my former students have even gone on to become Piano teachers themselves!

You will learn about chord structures, rhythmic structures, and various ways to keep a song interesting. We will also explore different ways to highlight the lyrics, making sure the text and the music is working together.

About Christoffer

*** Bio ***
I have an MFA in Music Composition and Piano Performance from California Institute of the Arts and a BA in Music Composition from UC Santa Barbara. I began piano at the age of 7 and started composing as a teenager. Teaching has always been important to me. I started providing lessons in high school and learned that giving musical knowledge is just as important as acquiring the skills it takes to be a musician. Studying with me will help you become a well-rounded musician
with the ability to play the type of music you want to play.

Constantly composing, film scoring, and performing, I'm a very active musician that works with classical musicians, rock musicians, and everything in between. I teach a variety of instruments and will cater lessons to your styles and interests. I'm also a recording artist and work with music software such as Ableton Live, Native Instruments, and Sibelius. I would love to teach you how to compose and record your own music in whichever genre you prefer.

*** Lesson Details ***
Many of my students have studied music in the past, but weren't able to keep the passion. I pride myself as a very enthusiastic teacher that works hard at making lessons fun and interesting for any age and background. All of my students (from 3 years old to 60 years old) enjoy music and practice harder than ever. You will be provided with a solid foundation in theory, aural skills, technique, and creativity, giving you the ability to carve your own path in music. You will learn the correct way to play your instrument and develop the intuition to command it expressively.

*** Studio Equipment ***
My North Hollywood studio is a private garage turned into a studio. It has 2 desks, a full-size Yamaha keyboard, ukulele, accordion, didgeridoo, guitar, electric bass, chairs, music stand, laptop, and a printer.

My Mar Vista studio is a private room in a house with a semi-concert grand Steinway piano and everything else included in the North Hollywood studio.

Great lesson. This was my first time putting on an accordion in over 30 years and Christoffer had me reading music by the end of my first 30 minute lesson.

Chris is a great teacher. I worked with him at CalArts. He has a highly diverse range of skills as an instrumentalist and composer. He works in various musical styles fluently (from film scoring, songwriting, instrumental and vocal writing, to electronic music). A friendly and pleasant teacher to work with—he is very good at meeting the student at his/her level and helping them with their own individual artistic goals/needs. I highly recommend him as a teacher to anyone wanting to develop their musical skills.

About Thomas

From a young age, I have been deeply involved in the musical community. I began studying piano when I was three, and throughout my education, I’ve learned from such accomplished instructors as Belle Mehus and Christopher Taylor. After receiving a Bachelor’s Degree in Piano Performance from The University of Mary in North Dakota, I continue to study, teach, perform, and compose. I’ve also studied guitar and bass for nearly twenty years.  I love playing and teaching these instruments because of the strong correlations between the way they are tuned and played and the way western music theory wor
ks—as well as the pure enjoyment that comes from them!  Additionally, I have twenty years of education in oboe and other woodwind instruments. I was principle oboist for two orchestras and reached the third round of auditions for 3rd oboe in The Minnesota Orchestra in 2006. Lastly, I have been an active vocalist since being a boy soprano in Menotti's Amahl and the Night Visitors and Andrew Lloyd Weber's Requiem.

I genuinely enjoy all aspects and styles of music—whether I’m studying a Chopin Etude, playing Charles Mingus at a jazz gig, writing and performing with my rock band, or composing hip hop tracks for a short film. I am an easygoing teacher who gets results, and I would love to welcome more people to my diverse group of students.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am very pleased with my teaching method because I help my students achieve great progress, as well as immense enjoyment. I have a fairly standard routine of teaching technique, theory, and musicality, but I keep a comfortable, laid-back environment. The result is solid, consistent advancement that might come from a stricter method of teaching, with a lesson experience that is more fun and loose.

I am also a highly versatile instructor. While there are certain things that I believe are always necessary when learning a musical instrument, I incorporate them into each student's distinct capabilities and preferences. In short, I can instill the same musical values in every student, whether they’re studying J.S. Bach, The Rolling Stones, or Rihanna.

I take my students' goals and musical preferences very seriously and strive to make every student happy. I am always open to any ideas a student might have, and I am available to answer questions at all times.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide literature and some accessories. Student needs to have instrument, other accessories, and a music stand.

Bryan's love for music started at a young age. He began taking private guitar lessons at the age of 10 learning the basics. Very helpful!

Bryan has been a very helpful, knowledgeable and flexible guitar teacher. He uses my interests and questions to drive lesson content. I find personally that understanding the music theory behind what I'm learning to play is very helpful, so we've spent a lot of time breaking things down. He's very knowledgeable. He also does a good job of explaining how he uses his intuition as a guitar player and musician, which helps me develop intuition of my own.I would definitely recommend Bryan!

Matthew I

Culver City, CA

About Matthew J

I have been playing guitar for 14 years and teaching guitar and bass for 7 years. I have worked as a private and group guitar instructor at several music education establishments in the Chicago area and in Eugene, Oregon as well. I have also worked as a band coach for youth groups, where I taught them cover songs, helped them write their own songs and prepared them for live performances.
I studied at Columbia College Chicago majoring in Music Composition and Classical Guitar.
I also studied classical guitar at Lane C.C. and received an Associate of Arts Degree where I studied with Unive
rsity of Oregon Classical Guitarist John Jarvie.
I started taking private guitar lessons as a teenager for several years and played in my high school jazz band along with original rock bands. While in high school, I was able to study with popular Chicago rock virtuoso guitarist Kevin M. Buck, where I first learned music theory and was inspired me to be more studious with the guitar.

I have performed in rock/modern bands for 12 years as an electric guitarist and also for 4 years as a solo acoustic guitarist mixing Bossa Nova, Classical Guitar and original compositions into my performance repertoire.

*** Lesson Details ***
I'm a patient teacher that's passionate about guitar and helping students reach their musical goals whether they are casual players or serious musicians. For beginners, I use Hal Leonard instructional guitar books along with paper handouts and sheet music. I believe it's important for everyone to learn the fundamentals of music to create a strong base of skills in order to continue playing and learning music throughout one's life. For more experienced players, I like to teach various modern rock/pop songs, classical guitar songs, picking patterns, finger picking patters, improvisation, scales and music theory. I teach nylon string acoustic, steel string acoustic guitar and electric guitar and bass
I believe the most basic goal for a guitar student is to be able to play a song in it's entirety, whether it's by themselves or with other musicians/music students. I believe that some of the most important music skills are learned while actually playing with other musicians. It is crucial when learning an instrument to be able to play in 'real time'; playing music with a steady sense of rhythm.

*** Specialties ***
I teach Classical Guitar, Brazilian Jazz, bass guitar, rock, pop, blues, funk and folk guitar using method books, sheet music and guitar tablature.
