Kyle S.

Portland, OR

About Kyle

Hey!

My name is Kyle S. and I'm incredibly passionate about music education for all ages. Over twenty years of playing all instruments has taught me there is not one specific way to teach music, so I change my curriculum for every student and completely customize what you learn to how you learn, and what you're interested in. I started teaching music lessons in after school programs when I was eleven and fell totally in love. I continued to do this for many years driving to neighboring towns, volunteering at church youth groups and local Boys and Girls Club all around my hometown.

I we
nt on to study Music Education at Oregon State University and Guitar Performance at the University of Oregon and Jazz Performance on Guitar at Portland State University! At each of these Universities I taught students my age as well as locals in each town and have been supporting myself entirely through music since 2008! Additionally, I work for a Record Label in Portland, "PJCE Records", and have real life experience with production, press releases and booking through the west coast and mid-west.

In Portland I've been gigging, playing on records, recording music for films, and volunteering every week at Nonprofit Music Schools around town to help underprivileged kids, and expose them to the joy of music. Give me a call and we can talk about what you're interested in, and get lessons started.

Look forward to hearing from you!

I'm fairly laid back, and teach from a number of different texts depending on the interests of the student. Each student is different, and I vary instruction accordingly. I have a lot of experience songwriting, composing, and playing as a sideman in groups on different instruments. I've been part of bands led by myself and been hired by other people, as well as composing for different groups of instruments from trios to full orchestras.

If there is interest, I can also provide worksheets based on the curriculum and standards held by the University of Oregon, and Portland State University.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Private home studio equipped with a many guitars, a piano, a Wurlitzer, electric bass and amplifier, two drum kits, and a beautiful kitty.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide guitars, amplifiers, and notebooks for all students even if they do not own guitars or amplifiers. I also make copies and email attachments of all homework, and record lessons and send them to students to listen to when practicing.

*** Specialties ***
I've been playing and studying guitar since I was seven years old. I've attended Berklee School of Music summer workshops, camps, seminars, and presented music theory papers at conferences at the University of Oregon. I can and am willing to teach any type of musical style or interest to any skill level!

Kyle is an incredible teacher. His lessons are the perfect balance of fun, relaxed, and challenging. His passion is infectious, especially when delving into music theory. I would highly recommend him to anyone looking to get a fuller, deeper understanding of music and how it works.

Kyle has been great! I started using him for lessons for my son who just turned 5. He has the energy and attention span of a 5yr old. Despite this Kyle has done very well with him. He mixes the right amount of play and discipline to accomplish the lesson objectives and keep my son focused while maintaining a relationship with my son that makes him look forward to the lessons. I had a hard time finding teachers to start with someone so young, but Kyle has done great and I would certainly recommend giving him a try. We have done lessons both at Kyle's studio and our home.

Jane Y.

Ridgefield, WA

About Jane

A Professional Musician, I am now happy to pass my skills and knowledge on to the next generations so that they may have ALL the fun and enjoyment of music in their lives, that I had in mine.

Having toured the East Coast Venues (NYC to Key West) for 30 years, and self produced 10 CDs, I have 3 EMMY AWARDS for soundtrack music for the EXPEDITION FLORIDA SERIES, Nature Documentaries. They were funded by the University of Florida, Museum of Natural History, and the Tourist Development Council of Alachua County, Florida.

Playing acoustic and electric six string guitars, electric bass guita
r, piano and keyboards, drums, percussion and hand drums, I majored in Flute and Voice at University of Florida School of Music and have spent my life immersed in and obsessed by the world of music.

I have played classical, rock, reggae, folk, jazz, swing, country, bluegrass, praise, gospel, afro-pop, ska and 80's music, and have toured as a solo act, duo - CecilyJane (5 years), and with a full 6 piece band, SKATTERBRAINZ (8 years.)

I teach lessons and classes full time, and also perform LIVE and in person frequently in local venues for profit and community service.

*** Lesson Details ***
Lessons start with learning the names of notes, how to read music, a bit of music theory (time signature, sharps and flats) and how this translates to the instrument the child chooses. All instruments are taught by fingering first and then musical notes second. It is easier for the child this way, and he/she can be playing a song with both hands by the end of first lesson.

As the child learns the beginning steps of reading and implementing music, I encourage them to tell me what songs they like, and then try to find an easy one to start with.

So that while we are learning "real music" we are also having fun with a piece that your child enjoys and has "CHOSEN".

This way they have some discipline AND some fun!

As pieces are mastered, the same pieces can be redone on different, more difficult levels, so that pieces are always growing and improving.

Eventually the student can read music competently on the instrument, as well as hear and play by ear.

At higher levels I teach the ability to improvise and read music and chord charts in order to play professionally with other musicians. I also encourage students to get with other students and friends to have music "sessions." They can bring their musical friends to lesson to help learn songs for TALENT SHOWS or CHURCH or what ever their immediate needs or desires are. I can also record "Karaoke" tracks for songs they write or want to sing for talent shows/ auditions.

All lessons are custom designed for the student's abilities, tastes and goals. ALL LESSONS ARE DESIGNED TO BE FUN, and ENJOYED BY THE STUDENT as well as the instructor. I want both of us to have a great time in lesson and learn while we do.

Once a student becomes proficient at reading and playing the instrument, they are invited to be a part of the HUMMINGBIRD BAND which does regular performances at local retirement homes and other local events and festivals. Bi Annual student recitals are also held at a local retirement home with a grand piano and Recital room.

Jane was my room mate for about 2 years and I observed her dedication to teaching music to her students. Seeing them succeed and be able to perform was always a treat as I went to her and her students rehearsals and performances. Seeing her students succeed in all aspects of their lives is a top priority for Jane.

Ms Jane has been a fantastic teacher of music to our two children, 12 & 13yrs. She has taught mainly guitar and piano and at times drums and bass to them both. She is a strong determined teacher who wants to see her students gain a clear understanding of musical instruments and learn how to play skillfully the instrument of choice. Thanks Ms Jane your work with our kids has been greatly appreciated.

He has received an award in Southern California for Outstanding Musical Direction in a theatrical production of "The King and I.
" He is currently the vocal coach for Magenta Theater and Musical Director for Metropolitan Performing Arts Academy, both in Vancouver, WA.

He has traveled the US with The Continental Singers, an international singing group, been a choral director in churches and various performing groups. He has worked as a recording studio engineer, live sound engineer, and theater sound designer.

Don strives to bring out the best in each student. Whether a beginner, intermediate, or advanced student, Don will expand your musical horizon and styles to new levels.

*** Lesson Details ***
All that I request from a student is a desire to learn. I will work with you at your pace to achieve the musical goals you have. Each student begins at a different level.

The first lesson will focus on your musical background. If you are a beginner, that's no problem. I specialize in working with beginning students to teach them all the joy and satisfaction there is in mastering an instrument.

I love to laugh and the lessons are very laid back and fun, but I desire that a student move forward and learn new techniques.

You will be playing simple songs after your first lesson. I'm asked many times by students "how long will it take until I'm good." My answer is: that is in direct proportion to the amount of time you dedicate to practicing. After a month or two, you will know how to read music and have a basic understanding of music theory.

I use various curriculum depending on the student's need. For piano, I generally use Alfred Methods. For guitar, Hal Leonard or Mel Bay. For voice, the curriculum is individually tailored to the students level and goals.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in theatrical performance for actors/vocalists.

Expanded my range and strengthened my voice.

Don has a lot of experience, worked well around my schedule, and is very professional.
From day one he gave me exercises and study material to take home. Due to his experience he could pinpoint my weak points and give me something to work on for next week. If I couldn't make it on my lesson day Don was very open and helpful with rescheduling.
Don is friendly, punctual, and can I say experienced one more time :) I would highly recommend him to anyone looking to expand there music knowledge.

He has illuminated my understanding for the guitar

James has been my guitar teacher for four years and has illuminated my understanding for the guitar and classical music. His love of the guitar and music is expressed in his generosity in sharing and teaching. He has a gift of patience that conveys his enjoyment of playing and listening to music, even in it's most beginning expression. One never experiences disapproval from James, the attitude is always toward learning to improve.

A positive, professional teacher.

James,

"I signed up for guitar 101 at Clark College. I found James to be a fine teacher, since he expected me, as a student, to reach beyond my abilities and; yes, compose a musical encore. As a private instructor, I find him to be tactful, as he continues to reward me with ever more complex musical sheets. He is always working with me to reach my specific goals. I could take lessons closer to my home; but continue to visit Clark College, because James has the ability to not only play great guitar, but to teach what he plays. The other Martha"
