I teach reading rhythms, playing with a bend and how to groove!
I have taught private guitar, piano, bass and drum lessons since the late 70s in Salt Lake City, where I majored in jazz guitar performance, and since 1980 in Los Angeles. I make the lessons fun. Some of my students have received college scholarships and won cash prizes for music contests. All of them had fun while learning and improving on their instruments.
*** Lesson Details *** I am very enthusiastic and can teach students how to read. If they do not want to read music, they can learn to play by ear. I can also show them where to put their fingers. During piano lessons, I often accompa
ny students on guitar and suggest a scale for improvisation, so they can play the blues. During drum lessons, I often play bass so they can learn to groove.
*** Travel Equipment *** They should have their own instrument and a music stand.
*** Specialties *** I specialize in jazz improvisation on piano and guitar. I also teach recreational guitar and piano for adults, including classical and blues styles. I coach bass players and drummers in playing stylistically correct grooves for jazz, rock and latin music.

I developed a desire later in life to learn how to play jazz and blues piano. I was very fortunate to start learning from Mike. He started me out with basic blues and over time I progressed into many of the jazz standards. Because he is also an accomplished guitar player, at all his lessons, he would accompany me while I played the new piece of music I was learning. He also does this if you are learning the guitar. This was very helpful in giving me a more complete musical experience, as I also learned to hear and play with other musicians. He is an extremely patient and upbeat instructor, constantly giving me positive reinforcement. I would get a new tune to practice as I became more proficient with the previous one. Each new tune became progressively more challenging. Having taken lessons from Mike for many years, I also witnessed his teaching and developing of younger kids. He really works with them in a positive way giving them as much time as they need to turn the corner on each tune and progress forward. They seem to enjoy it and he has developed some great musicians. As part of his instruction, he gives all his students an opportunity to participate in a Jazz Band he puts together. In this Jazz Band he leads all the players in working together though a jam session. Other players may include guitarists, brass players and keyboardists, young and older. Frankly I am forever grateful to Mike for helping me create the foundation to play jazz and blues piano both alone and with a group of other musicians.

Eli has been awesome. My son is really enjoying his lessons and feels so happy with his progress every week. Eli obviously has skills AND he knows how to share them. We couldn't be happier.

Very good with young children
My son is 4 years old and has only had two sessions with Eli however, he does a very good job of communicating with him on his level and keeping his focus. He also has given him practice exercises which seem to do the trick.
Ryan has excellent range as a drum instructor, and has had success teaching all levels/styles, and all ages, as young as 3 years old! Ryan can teach non-western styles as well, in particular the challenge of adapting these rhythms to the drum set. Ryan also has professional experience singing and drumming, which is a unique skill to possess, whether for backing or lead vocal situations.
Ryan started his music with piano lessons at age four while lending his vocal talents in the recording booth for his musician/writer/ arranger father, Rick. Ryan was playing in piano recitals by age six, segued from keyboards to drums at age 14, and was subsequently accepted into the University of California, Santa Barbara percussion program after high school.
While an undergraduate at UCSB, Ryan spent three years as the principal timpanist for the UCSB Symphony and five years as timpanist with the UCSB Wind Ensemble. Concurrently over the same five year period, he performed with a diver
sity of UCSB ensembles, Orchestra and Jazz combos, work with the College of Creative Studies department (CCS), and a variety of recording and recital work in and outside the university. Chiefly among these was the UCSB Percussion Ensemble, where Ryan performed on a variety of percussive instruments, in solo or featured pieces. He worked over two years as a percussionist with the Santa Barbara Youth Symphony, with a focus on timpani. Ryan also focused on the Indian Tabla drums, a discipline he also taught through the Ethnomusicology department at the University after his graduation.
Ryan has studied with percussionist Mike Faux, and Greg Goodall, Hollywood Bowl Principal Timpanist, as well as world-class percussionist and composer William Kraft. For three years, Ryan studied under John Magnussen, currently teaching percussion at CSUN, and Jon Nathan, director of Ethnomusicology Jazz UCSB, and Principal Timpanist for the Santa Barbara Civic Light Opera.
Ryan was hired (by Patrick Lindley, Principal Musician, UCSB Dance) for over a year to ultimately perform full time as one of only two music accompanists for the UCSB Dance dept. modern dance classes. As accompanist, he worked with modern studio and master classes for visiting dance companies and artists performing in-concert at UCSB including Paul Taylor, Larry Keigwin, Santa Barbara Summer Dance, White Oak and Pilobilus. In addition to his role as music accompanist, Ryan guest-lectured rhythm and percussion classes for the dance department on a number of occasions. After moving to San Francisco in the fall of 2002, Ryan expanded his involvement in the role of accompanist to include ODC, SFDC, Joe Goode, Stanford dance and Laney college in Oakland.
Other professional and teaching experience includes work with LA movie and mainstream film music composer Aaron Martin, Ride Productions, and Hands On. In the instructional realm, Ryan has worked with all ages and abilities, ranging from children aged four to adults at the college level and beyond, in both individualized and classroom or group environments. Additionally, Ryan has taught drumkit to a number of local students in the Santa Barbara as well as Los Angeles and San Francisco areas.
In the progressive Santa Barbara, LA and San Francisco scenes, Ryan has played percussion for bands that recorded a full-length and demo-length albums respectively, performing throughout the state of California with his band, The Prototype. His current band project, Excessive Acts, performs regularly in the Los Angeles area. They are currently in the post-production phase of their first EP-length album.
*** Lesson Details *** Hello and welcome! The following paragraphs will provide you with an ample amount of information on my background, experience, and ability. I do, however, consider all of this information to be supplemental; the most important thing about any teacher of music is the ability to relate warmly with a student, to create an open and nurturing atmosphere in which the student is never made to feel uncomfortable or wrong. Everything is a process, and while there are always guidelines to be followed, music is ever in motion. Music is not absolute and rigid, but has a give and take. I always try to appeal to that same sense of flow in my own music exploration, as well as in my teachings to others.
Attributes and Services
Ryan is a professional drummer/percussionist with over 15 years experience performing and teaching to students of all ages in a wide variety of styles ranging from orchestral and chamber percussion to jazz, funk, rock, metal, as well as many ethnic musics such as those fund in Africa and South America, the middle east and India.
Instrumental techniques offered include drumset as well as hand percussion including conga, bongo, darbukka, tabla, and assorted percussion--double pedal or brush technique also offered. Leading my bucket list was learning to play the drums, and I am so fortunate to have Ryan as my instructor. He is very patient and encouraging. His bio states that he teaches students of all ages, and I venture to guess that I am his oldest student at age 71. He is not only teaching me to play the drums, but to read music as well. You are never too old to follow your dreams. Thank you Ryan!

Ryan has been teaching Drum lesson to my 8 years old son for last 3 months. My son is a very challenging student and has problem focusing and paying attention. I am really amazed that he actually learnt and playing music.
I prepare young beginners who have an interest in drum set with the fundamentals of this fascinating instrument that is a BLAST to play. Drumming is particularly good for kinesthetic learners who thrive on the physicality and challenge of it.
With two adult drummer sons, I've been "schooled" in drumming forever. I use rhythm instruments and movement to work with students who need some preparation before they are ready to tackle the drum set. Then we get to it!
A musician since age 4, Teresa's dad took her early passion for music seriously. So she respects the power that parents have to foster their children's musical lives! She notes the many stories she has heard over the years: "If someone had just supported my interest"... "If my teacher had listened to what I wanted to learn."
These stories and her own passion for music-making inform her approach. A degreed music educator and multi-instrumentalist, she celebrates and uses the musical interests of her students to move them forward. She has three grown sons, including two touring musicians. Th
eir musical lives also influence her work with children, young people, and adults. The point is to celebrate and develop each student's unique, interest-based musical self-expression.
In her home teaching studio in Sherwood Forest, CA, 30 minutes is the perfect lesson time for most purposes. Options include piano, voice, ukulele, beginning guitar, beginning drum set, and preparation for auditions. Teresa also conducts early childhood music sessions for 3 to 5 year-olds. 45-minute and 60-minute sessions are also available as needed, and are recommended for audition prep.
For a little more info on Teresa, she is a certified professional coach. Her passion is coaching others in meeting their musical AND larger life goals. So if anyone in your circle could use expert support in accomplishing a goal that really matters to them, rather than just dreaming about or wishing for it, have them look her up right here on this site, Teresa Y., Life Coaching, 91325. I'm a first time music enthusiast! I know NOTHING about music. I left knowing how to tune my ukulele, the C, F,G chords, and the beginning portions of a Bob Marley "Three Little Birds" song! Teresa was wonderful, knowledgeable, and very comfortable to be around! I'm excited to work with her, and see where my skills develop! ;) I already am going to refer her to my friends!

Teresa and I have worked together as music teachers and on other music projects. She is a skilled and experienced music teacher that I would recommend to anyone. What really sets her apart is her positive presence -- not only is she fun to be around, but her personality makes you feel supported in working toward your goals.

Teresa is great. She is very patient and very good at carrying on conversations with little ones. My 6 yo daughter’s been going to her home for weekly Ukulele lessons for about 2 months now, and my daughter adores her. Teresa is always willing to be flexible with switching lesson time to fit my ever changing schedule.

Athan is such a patient instructor. With me being an "older" student who doesn't learn as fast as I used to, he is very encouraging and nurturing. He is very talented and overall a great teacher. I hope I will become as good as him as a drummer one day. =)

"I studied with Evan all through high school (2000-2005). I have since taken lessons from many other professional drummers and finished a degree in music a
t BYU and Evan still stands to be one of the best teachers I've ever had. He is very thorough in teaching technique/sticking/independence and all that, but most importantly he is a master at helping you APPLY what you learn in a musical way that is honest and meaningful. He is great at helping the student understand the bigger picture drumming and how to get out of your head and try to make real music. On top of that he is a great guy and fun to take lessons from. I owe much of my drumming success to him. I think that my sound and the way I approach the instrument are largely due to how he taught me and inspired me. I highly recommend any aspiring drummer no matter what level to study with Evan. One of the best in Southern California."

"We decided to get our son involved in something that doesn't require a gaming controller and he chose drums. We picked Tom out of the gate and I told my s

Tom ALWAYS is encouraging and supportive which has helped build my son's confidence and stoke his passion for something other than XBox. He has been flexible with us when needed.
