I have 30 years experience in playing and teaching many styles, including rock, folk, classical, and jazz, I have played classical guitar at weddings for over 30 years, both as a soloist and with ensembles. I have put together occasional jazz groups. I am also familiar with much rock and folk music, especially from the '60s.

About Geoff
I played on a toy piano when I was very young, learning a bit of sight reading from my Mother, while listening to classical, jazz, and rock music. When I was 12, I learned guitar and later took private piano lessons from a prominent Philadelphia instructor. After playing in a rock band in high school, I went to college and received my degree in Physics. During this time, I joined a choir, and sang and played guitar in a contemporary vocal group where I became the lead guitarist and vocal arranger, and later became the director. I also played guitar in my church, as well as in a small folk group, performing music of the Beatles, Bacharach, Crosby, Stills, and Nash, and many others. I also played or sung in a number of weddings during my college days.

Upon graduation, I moved to the DC area to work in the engineering field, while s
imultaneously pursuing my music ambition. I studied classical guitar at American University with a student of the great Andres Segovia, and also studied jazz guitar with a former student of a prominent jazz guitarist, Pat Martino. Additionally, I sang in choirs and studied composition privately with a prominent Washington area composer and performer from Catholic University, I also began to teach at an area performing arts academy.

My most long-term experiences in music have been serving in my local church for over 30 years, either playing guitar (acoustic, electric, bass), piano, or arranging vocals in a contemporary worship band. I also started a church choir, and led both choir and small orchestra in a number of special performances. Additionally, I led congregational worship in different scenarios. During this time I also taught students of all ages guitar, piano, and music theory, and have continued to today in helping students to find their musical potential and pursue their musical ambitions.

I have recently retired from my engineering career so I can use my musical gifts in my local church and teach music as a second career. I have completed my second degree at George Mason University, and continue to play with other musicians there. More importantly, I continue to learn how to better teach others of all ages how to grow in all aspects of music-making.

*** Lesson Details ***
Having taught for many years, my approach is flexible and I can adjust my teaching style and/or curriculum to maximize the student's potential for learning at any age. I have taught improvisation on a number of different instruments such as violin, cello, flute, and clarinet.

Here are some testimonials from present or former students/parents:

"Mr. S. is very earnest; when he gives you a compliment, you can tell he really means it. He's very patient and experienced and skilled and he is willing to take what he's teaching down to my level to help me understand it." Gregory K., age 10
Geoff is a patient and encouraging instructor. He tailored my lessons towards the skills that I needed. He provides the necessary encouragement when the long hours of practice seem impossible to sustain. I could write a book about Geoff's credentials: highly qualified is an understatement. -- Neal B.
Mr. S. is awesome at playing and teaching guitar, and he is nice and helps you. -- Michael B., age 12
œI'm sure I could learn to ˜Play Guitar Today™ using books and videos, but I think I'm on the right track with private one-on-one instruction. “ Linda H.
The guitar lessons are fun, interactive, and instructive. A great way to make learning a delight!“ Gina R., parent

I structure my lessons so students learn what they want to learn, while also building a strong foundation of guitar skills. I typically use Alfred's Basic books and also have the following tools available to use during lessons: flash cards and a metronome. I work with my students on sight reading as well as ear training so they can become better players over time. I also provide students with homework sheet that explains what we have been focusing on, what they have achieved, and what is the expectation for next lesson.

About Hanaa
Hi there! My name is Hanaa. I have a Bachelor degree in Music Education and have worked as a classroom teacher and a private tutor for ten years. I have no idea what I'm getting into when I first register for the class. Mrs. Hanaa was one of the instructor that have great reviews and a good price rate. Everyone who have reviewed her probably mention how closely she work with her student and how she allow them to learn in their own pace. I totally agree and she also provide a great atmosphere that allow the student excited to learn. If other review does not convince you to choose her, I hope this one will.

Ms. Hanna is an amazing person and teacher. My kids immediately fell in love with her. I can see why, she is very personable and easy to get along with. She instilled the love of music in my boys and they look forward to her lessons ( not an easy task with boys age 7 to 9). She also has very calming tone and demeanor , which makes a great educator. I highly recommend Ms. Hanna for lessons.

Guitar has always been a springboard for me for musical ideas. Teaching guitar has been very rewarding because it (like piano) gives students skills that transfer well across all instruments and musical styles which lets me see my students have fun in many different directions. My lessons are divided into sections that get students playing tunes quickly while also focusing on technique and musicality/creative exercises.

About Daniel
Hello! My name is Daniel and I have been playing and teaching guitar and bass (electric and upright) in all styles for over 15 years. I even have a Masters Degree and a Bachelors (double degree) in music to show for it. My students have the benefit of highly customized lessons based on their interests and goals.

As a teacher, I have been delighted to see my students find success and joy in music as a number of my students have won awards through school and extracurricular groups

In my 7 year musical career, I have become a skilled sheet music reader, song interpreter, and can play in key well with other musicians.

These three components of musicianship are essential for the growth of anybody starting out. Becoming comfortable in these areas will inspire students to continue growing their musical capabilities.

My prices are lower than what you may find in the area because while I am very good at music and have 7 solid years of diverse experience, I feel I can provide the most benefit in the beginning stages of the students learning path, so cheap prices my make up for a lack of schooling or professional training; but I have given many lessons before and my students have all been very successful!

Being taught by me includes sight reading basics first and then moving onto playing popular songs and playing in key. I am very comfortable teaching any age.

I am a young professional myself and would be eager to teach you or your family member!

About Jake
I've been playing guitar and piano for 7 years, during this time I've played with local bands and even manage one! The DC music scene is thriving and unique and I'd love to do my part inspiring and teaching people eager to play.

I also love to ski!

Brian immediately knew how to adapt to my profile.... not too young, not too talented, not too available, and without any ambition about playing on stage or in a group. I've been learning bass guitar for one month and a half with him, starting at a beginner's level. Last week-end I was able to play a few songs more or less correctly with some friends at a party. Brian has the talent to keep the fun while teaching, and bringing appreciable progress in a very pleasant path.

I have been playing guitar for almost 12 years now. I have helped many musicians for their auditions into various music schools and programs and each have been granted acceptance, some even received scholarship. I am currently studying music for a degree in music education with an emphasis on guitar pedagogy. I also like to teach and incorporate elements regarding ear training and music theory. Music is very personal and should be treated as such, therefore I believe the student should have a wide latitude of input for what they wish to learn and goals they deem fit to achieve. I am truly driven towards playing and spreading the love of playing music and will help the student reach their highest potential possible. I can teach blues, rock, pop, jazz, and classical.

About Taylor
Music is a world within itself, your instrument a microcosm of that world which you create. There are no rules, no limits except the ones you put on yourself. This idea means volumes to me and the ability to pass on this feeling to someone else is beyond success to me. I love to teach and am willing to go wherever the student wants to go and give them the necessary tools in order to build the world they want to create. I have been playing for almost 12 years and have a lot to share that I've learned over that time. I teach blues, rock, pop, jazz, funk, R&B, and classical styles as well as improvisation the the necessary music theory and ear training to go along with it. I can also teach elements of songwriting if the student wishes to song write. I have helped students with their auditions into various music schools and programs all of wh
ich they have been accepted into, some even receiving scholarship. I have also tutored students from freshman in college to juniors in college in music theory and ear training. I have played with various jazz bands and combos as well has pop and jam bands around the Radford Virginia area.

I cannot wait to meet the student and take their playing and musicianship to new heights!
