Hello! My name is Olivia R. and I am currently a Master's student in Piano Teaching and Performance at CU Boulder.
Teaching piano is something that I love. I have taught for 7 years now in both Nashville, TN (Music City) and Little Rock, AR. My students have ranged from ages 5 to 15. Classical piano is my specialty, but I also enjoy teaching jazz, pop, and ensemble piano. I am currently employed at the Parlando School for the Arts in Boulder and teach there on a weekly basis.
As a music student and teacher, I value the qualities of hard work and excellence while also encouraging my students to never forget that music is fun and inspirational! For me, educating others in music is a way I hope to contribute positively to my local community. Being given the opportunity to share music and inspire those around me through it is a tremendous gift and privilege that I do not take for granted.
About Olivia
I am a Master's student at CU Boulder studying Piano Teaching and Performance. For the past four years, I have lived in Nashville, TN (Music City) - obtaining my Bachelor's Degree in Piano Performance from Belmont University, teaching, and gigging in the city.
I specialize in classical piano, but also teach pop, jazz, and ensemble repertoire. Classical piano lessons (especially for beginners) provide a great foundation for students, even if they decide later on to pursue another musical genre. As a pianist in Nashville, I've been privileged to work with musicians from all genres. In 2012, I was featured in the holiday special, Christmas at Belmont which aired on PBS. I also had the privilege of working with three time Grammy award-winner, Michael W. Smith in 2013. In 2015 and 2016, I was fortunate to play with the Nashville Sym
My teaching philosophy is that music should be inspiring! I truly believe and have seen first-hand that music lessons have the power to change lives at any age. For me, teaching piano is a way to positively contribute to my local community. I am currently teaching at the Parlando School for the Arts in Boulder and hope to expand my teaching studio into the broader community.
Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or reference requests. I look forward to meeting you!

I believe it is essential that students enjoy learning! For this reason, I am flexible in my teaching style, striking a precise balance of structure and freedom that each individual student responds to best. Students appreciate my ability to break down complex skills into small, easily digestible parts as well as my confidence in their abilities and compassionate and warm teaching style.
My approach to teaching helps to teach students not only musical skills, but also important life skills such as discipline, time management, motivation, the significance of different perspectives, and problem solving.
Classes with me involve learning to read music, studying theory, scales, improvisation, and composition, as well as how to play with others.
It is important to see the big picture when studying music, so in addition to learning and preparing pieces, my students occasionally prepare assigned projects, which have included such tasks as doing research on composers and the eras that ...
About Sequoia
As the oldest of 16 grandchildren I've been surrounded by children my entire life, leading, teaching and caring since early days. Thanks to this environment, relating to students come naturally to me, as has an intuitive sense of teaching.
After graduating in 2000 from Kingston High School, (in the Hudson Valley - Kingston, NY) with a music sequence I went on to attend New York University, where I earned a B.A. in Psychology, focusing on Development Psychology, specifically. After graduating, I began giving piano, voice and clarinet lessons and
After studying music education at San Francisco State University, I continued my studies at CUNY Hunter, earning my MA in Music Education in January 2011.
What I have learned from from my own music teachers throughout my life, comes through in my own teaching. I greatly value the contribution of all of my teachers, from those who started me off to those who taught me in adulthood. Their words and techniques can certainly be heard and felt in my own teaching, melding into my own style and personality.
As I ever look to find better ways of teaching, I set an example of excellence and gentle determination for my students. I encourage curiosity, steadfastness, dedication and enjoyment. I strive to motivate students so that they become excited about and dedicated to gaining new skills and achieving goals. I am extremely passionate about student success especially through music.
