My first class with Mya Mya was excellent. I had taken a class prior to this and was not feeling confident about my abilities until I met Mya Mya. If you're thinking about sewing and need help. I would encourage you to meet with an instructor first one-on-one before taking a class or online training. The instructor and can help guide you better. I'm so glad I learned about this instructor. You will not be disappointed.

About Naomi
I was originally born in Cincinnati, Ohio in a large family (youngest of nine kids), and we all attended Catholic schools... this is where I started learning Spanish. I have studied it (and English Literature) for many years, then eventually won a scholarship to study/travel in Mexico for six months. I returned from Mexico fluent, graduated from college with honors in language and Humanities, then decided to go live in Washington, DC to use that language. I got into corporate training, working 10 years at Fannie Mae as I traveled to 38 of the 50 states to help them train banks on their financial systems. I later began working in healthcare, and got certified as an interpreter AND as an Instructional Designer. I have designed educational programs ever since at hospitals, schools, educational centers, retail organizations, and with hig
her education (now at GWU). My hobbies include speaking Spanish, swimming, listening to jazz, playing with my daughter and my beagle.

If you are looking for a Spanish teacher look no further! Naomi is a very skilled and phenomenal teacher. I have taken her class for the last 10 months and I truly can see the progress I have made with her teaching style. She not only has set lessons from the book, but she will bring real-world examples such as food, newspapers, and music! I recently traveled to the Dominican Republic and I was amazed at how easily I was able to hold a conversation. The people there let me know that my Spanish was very good. It was definitely a compliment for me. I believe that a student is only as good as their teacher. Naomi is the right teacher!

About Orla
Hi there!

My name is Orla and I love singing and teaching others to sing! I began my vocal training at the age of 12 learning how to sing classical and musical theater music. I eventually went on to learn jazz and rock vocal techniques before going to Berklee College of Music in Boston where I learned how to sing celtic music and alternative contemporary styles.

The most important thing to me when working with singers of any age or ability is helping them learn the correct techniques to keep their voices safe and healthy while singing. With this strong foundation, my students will be able to achieve almost any style or level of singing they desire. It is totally possible to stretch your vocal range, learn a new style, or incorporate movement into your songs if you simply use the correct and healthy vocal techniques!
I also make s
ure to focus a lot on confidence and stage presence to help students prepare for upcoming auditions, showcases, concerts, and talent shows. With my voice lessons it is absolutely possible to transition out of your stage fright and own that stage like you were born to be there, because you were!! These are not only vocal coaching sessions, but complete performance-ready-workshops.
I am here to make all your singing and vocal performance dreams come true! I can't wait to sing with you :)

Orla has provided such a stress-free environment with passionate & patient individualized teachings, based on different singers needs, that make for the best learning environment.

She gives warm ups for the three parts of your singing voice along with recording the first time the warm up is introduced for you to have at home to practice along with.

Personally, I even had a tiny bit of trouble trying to do one of the warm ups and Orla went out of her way to do more research and found a warm up that was better suited for my voice. She never fails to say the most positive things that always put a smile on my face and assures students that its all a learning process. Even when you feel like you aren't progressing, she also provides the outside perspective of positive change and helps to reassure you progress is being made even without realizing it.

I didn't mean to write so much but Orla is a really amazing teacher with a big wealth of knowledge on singing and voice that shouldn't go unnoticed.
I had never taken voice lessons before but I feel so lucky to have found such a kind and motivating teacher!

About Jennifer
The most important thing to know about me is that I love working with children and it shows. You can trust that I will dedicate myself to the success of your child. Nothing brings me more joy than seeing a child succeed at something they truly struggled with.

I have homeschooled my two children since 2002. My son was homeschooled until he entered the Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, a highly selective specialized high school in Northern Virginia. He is now a student at at the Carnegie Mellon University School of Computer Science. I continue to homeschool my 13 year old daughter.

My most treasured memories are of teaching both my children to read, knowing the great gift of reading is a fundamental building block to a successful life.

I have worked with other children for seven years as a robotics coach and a coac
h for Destination Imagination. I love the thrill of watching children develop new skills, and the blossoming of self-esteem that comes with mastering those skills.

I decided to become a Barton tutor after I saw so many of my friends' dyslexic children succeed with the Barton system. One of my first students was my own nephew!

I have been using the system as a tutor since February, 2017. I graduated from the University of New Brunswick with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology-Psychology. I have loved caring for, educating and working with children for my entire adult life, and I will dedicate myself completely to the success of your child, using a proven, evidence-based system to teach dyslexic children to read and spell.

About Josh
I'm a researcher with 8 years of tutoring experience and spent a gap year directing an after-school tutoring program for at-risk youth. Over the years I've tutored dozens of students (in subjects ranging from biology, math, and earth science to English writing, SAT prep, and statistics) and have yet to come across someone whose grades did not significantly improve after our time working together. I'm more than happy to provide references to anyone looking to hear more about my past work.

I'm passionate about tutoring because I believe every student has the potential to thrive in an academic environment. Unfortunately, many students aren't taught in way that helps them achieve conceptual mastery or don't get enough individual attention in the classroom. That's why I believe in the power of the personal, individualized tutoring relationshi
p. When a tutor, I focus on a few things:

1) Concept Mastery - I work to help students understand that it's not enough to just understand how to solve a problem, but that you also need to understand why that solution works. If you have a deep conceptual mastery over the material, you'll be able to solve new kinds of problems with those same skills, even if you haven't encountered a problem like it before.

2) Academic Confidence – I’m always surprised by the number of students that I work with who honestly believe they aren’t smart or capable enough to succeed in school. So, part of my job as a tutor is to help those students understand that hard work and confidence are the key to success, so matter how difficult they find the work initially.

3) Love of Learning – This is perhaps the most important element to me. My favorite teachers were not the ones who managed to cram the most amount of information in my head, but those who helped me be excited about the subjects they taught. As a tutor, I work with students to develop excitement about the subject matter and a love of learning more generally.

Finally, here’s a bit more information about me. Currently, I'm a public health researcher at a large non-profit, and specialize in systematic reviews and project evaluation. I studied Sociology and Public Policy at UNC Chapel Hill. I graduated summa cum laude and received a Chancellor's award for excellence in my field of study. In the new few years, I plan to go back for a PhD in clinical psychology. I look forward to working with you or your student!

Josh was a very patient and a hands on tutor. He took time to get to know each student in order to better assist them personally. He had good boundaries with the students and was able to stay professional while being able to have fun with them. We saw personal gains based on the VA SOL test scores at the end of the school year after his assistance.

Both of my sons went from F’s to B’s with Josh’s help. We had all pretty much given up that they would be able to get good grades in math. We were just hoping Josh could get them to pass. We can’t say enough about Josh’s clear, understandable and relevant guidance. Yes, they got great grades, but he also made them feel confident in their abilities to do the work. He is wonderful!

About Vanity
Hello,
My name is Vanity but you can call me Vaani. I am a student at North Carolina State University where I double major in Horticulture and Plant Biology, and Minor in Religious studies. I am the 2nd oldest of seven children, and if you asked my siblings they would tell you I’m an awesome sister who loves showing them and teaching them new things. I currently tutor my baby brother who is 9 and my baby sister who is 13, so I have a great deal of patience and experience. I love having a good laugh while teaching, because what kid doesn’t like to have fun? I am a member of BETA BETA BETA which is the National Biological Honors Society so I’m pretty good at science. I love everything about physics and so that is where my math experience comes from. Reading is a huge passion of mines, I read a book a month and am quite the book hoarder. As
a young girl I loved spending long hours at the library and have a couple school spelling bee wins under my belt. I look forward to not only teaching you but learning from you. Until next time!

About Ali
I'm new to TakeLessons but have nearly a decade of experience in tutoring and mentoring students. I have Bachelor's of Science degrees in Bioengineering and Biology and a PhD in Applied Biomedical Engineering. I have applied my degrees extensively as a biomedical researcher with 17 peer-reviewed publications, over 50 conference abstracts, and three patents. After completing my post-doctoral training at the Cleveland Clinic, I began medical school at Georgetown University School of Medicine, where I am currently a medical student.

When I first started college, I was in your shoes. Having to learn advanced-level biology (e.g. molecular biology, human genetics, etc), mathematics (e.g. calculus I-IV, differential equations, etc) and engineering (e.g. fluid dynamics, mechanics of materials, biomedical signal processing, etc) seemed daunting.
However, I soon learned that topics that appear intimidating at first are actually fairly simple to learn once they've been broken down. My goal is to not only help you learn the material at hand but to teach you how to apply various techniques to learning even the most complex of subjects with a sense of confidence and ease. Regardless how advanced or basic the material, I'm certain I can teach you and that you can learn it.

I look forward to helping you achieve the success that you desire!
