I generally start a beginner student on the Rubank method. Once through the first book, I encourage the student to start learning how to make reeds. Once the student has developed a good embouchure, I like to provide the student reeds that I make so that we can work on breathe control, dynamics and articulation. Once through the second Rubank book, I then move the student into Barret.

I structure my lessons so students learn what they want to learn, while also building a strong foundation of guitar skills. I typically use Alfred's Basic books and also have the following tools available to use during lessons: flash cards and a metronome. I work with my students on sight reading as well as ear training so they can become better players over time. I also provide students with homework sheet that explains what we have been focusing on, what they have achieved, and what is the expectation for next lesson.

"Will had been my teacher for about two years before I relocated to another city and he's the best instructor I've had. Will had a great level of patience, he's methodical with his lesson plans, and he's very analytical. His lessons are challenging and there is never a dull moment. Most importantly, he's passionate about music and he'll inspire you to love music as much as he does. I highly recommend Will!"

Violin Tips: Stiff Shoulders and Arm Pain

Playing the violin should be fun - not a pain! Some arm fatigue is normal when you're first starting out, but anything more than that may be a sign of poor posture, technique or instrument placement. Here are a few things to keep in mind as you practice and play... 1. Relax. Many beginner players tense up their shoulders, arms or wrist without even realizing it, which can cause a lot of problems. Just relax! Focus on your breathing, but also don't lose your posture. 2. Check your techni …
