Classical music-focused, fun and relaxed environment, experienced teacher with top conservatory background
Jessica moved to the Chevy Chase/Bethesda area in 2009, having grown up and gone to school in New York and Ohio. She loves the area, and she and her husband are thrilled to be putting down roots in the community. As a performer, Jessica has traveled around the world, but throughout her career teaching has been one of her most important focuses. "As a relative newcomer to the DC area, growing my private studio has been a great way to get involved in the community. My teaching style is individualized, but I always try to include two important things: building a strong basic skill set, and developing creativity."
*** Lesson Details *** Whether your goal is to make it into All-State, give a solo recital, play tunes at family gatherings, or just try something new for the very first time, I will help you succeed and have a good time along
In my view, the most interesting thing about performing music is that it is one of the few activities that engages both the left and the right brain at the same time. With that in mind, my teaching places equal importance on developing strong technique, and developing creativity. Students learn all the basics of music, and also spend time developing strong ensemble skills and strong background knowledge of style and repertoire, so that they can enjoy music in all kinds of settings, all their lives.
Knowing from experience how "boring" it can be to learn by rote, I combine technical work with fun time playing duets together, improvising, and exploring a wide variety of styles and genres of music. After all, there is no experience so motivating as hearing a new piece that you HAVE to learn to play yourself!
*** Studio Equipment *** lessons in either living room or upstairs office; Steinway baby grand piano in living room;
*** Travel Equipment *** I expect piano students to have daily access to either a piano or a keyboard with 88 full-sized, weighted keys. Bass or cello students must have their own bass or cello.
I had a great first lesson with Jessica. The lesson took place in a comfortable studio in her house. We discussed my goals and then reviewed where I am currently. She paid carefully attention to my body position with the bow and had several great suggestions on exercises to improve it. I'm already looking forward to the next lesson.

I really enjoy taking piano lessons with Jessica. It had been 40 years since I took lessons (as a teenager). Jessica's manner as well as her knowledge and love of music is just what I was hoping to find in a teacher. Her ability to explain musical concepts and her thoughtful approach to teaching has far surpassed my expectations. She gives great constructive feedback and ensures that you understand what she is saying. She is very positive and patient. I thoroughly enjoy my lessons with her and recommend her strongly.
My name is Travis, and I have been playing trumpet for 17 years. I have been teaching for 8. I love working with new students, and became more focused on private lessons during my Sophomore year in college. Speaking of which, I earned a Bachelors of Music in Trumpet Performance from the University of Maryland College Park.
While there, I played with the Wind Orchestra, Symphonic Orchestra and Jazz Band. I am also a regular performer with the Prince Georges Philharmonic.
As each student is different, so is my technique and teaching method. Generally, I have students work through the fundamentals of the instrument including fingerings, embouchure, breathing and scales. Once mastered, the more difficult obstacles such as range, dexterity, repertoire and endurance are approached. I do not work with a set schedule for s
tudents, and tailor the lesson plan for the student's growth and practice.
I earned my B.A. in music at Hood College and have spent the last fifteen years teaching general music classes as well as private voice and piano. I am also a preschool teacher in Montgomery County and my strengths lie in working with young children. If you are looking for a beginning piano teacher for your child, I would love to meet you! I use the Alfred series and generally have students work out of the technique, repertoire and theory books. Lessons are designed to be a half hour, and I understand the importance of changing activities frequently and keeping lessons fun and engaging when working with young children.
I earned my B.A. in music from Hood College and have been teaching private voice/piano lessons and general music in schools for the past fifteen years. I sang opera professionally in my twenties and early thirties, and have taught voice to both the young beginner who just likes to sing for fun and the serious musician preparing for a career in music. I also teach beginning - intermediate piano and particularly enjoy working with children (I am a preschool teacher by day). Thanks to my background in working with young children, I understand how to pace a lesson to keep a young child interested in sitting still on a piano bench for thirty minutes straight ;)
If you are interested in piano lessons, please have either a real piano or weighted keyboard at home for practice. You will also need to purchase a few music books (about $5 each).
Voice students will need to purchase song books ($15-20) after we meet and I get a feel for the student’s range and what type of repertoire we should work on.
Note: for VOICE LESSONS ONLY I only teach female students.
Andrew is a gifted teacher who prides himself on making the student feel comfortable, no matter their level of experience or ability. This approach has worked successfully for many of his students, allowing them to be more open and understanding of some of the many concepts introduced and practiced while learning the piano.
Andrew is also very adaptable, understanding that each student is different, responding to unique learning styles and approaches that suits them better than others. But one thing remains the same, and that is the ability to enjoy the work as well as feel clear and measurable progress. This is any student's ultimate goal, and Andrew has a proven track record of success when it comes to learning the instrument.
Andrew will work with you to establish clear goals, if you don't already possess them, and be a steady and comforting guide for you on your journey - no matter how far you intend to go.
Andrew started playing piano at the tender age of 3. His mom wanted him to spend his endless energy on something artistic so she started him on piano lessons. Very early on it was clear Andrew had a natural, unique ability to connect with the piano. He played in school bands throughout grade school and began performing around DC in high school. While Andrew also plays guitar, drums, and bass, the piano has remained his first love and primary instrument.
At seventeen, Andrew left DC and started college at The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York City. Andrew studied Jazz Piano but also led big bands, wrote and arranged music, produced, and engineered recordings. Shifting from Jazz to Rock in his early twenties, Andrew joined the band Ambulance LTD, playing live throughout New York City, the United States, and internat
ionally, as well as on the "LP" and "EP" recordings.
Upon returning to New York from touring, Andrew began assisting younger students at The New York Piano Academy—helping them to develop their playing skills, as well as their composing and arranging pursuits. The experience exposed his innate ability to build students’ talents through patience and encouragement, consistently taking them farther than they thought they could go. Andrew realized his passion for teaching and began working with students of all ages, from 3 year-old children to seniors. As a teacher, Andrew focuses on making learning enjoyable while teaching all types of music—pop, rock, jazz, classical, and even Broadway. Andrew tailors his lesson programs to the uniqueness of each student and teaches them not only how to play, but also how to better hear, enjoy, and love music.
Never thought l could to be able to learn a Bach invention before. Now I’m playing it. Very enthusiastic teacher.

Great first piano lesson for my 10 year old - Andrew was encouraging, patient and inspiring- my daughter connected with him right away and couldn’t wait to get home and practice. Looking forward to more lessons!
I want to inspire my students of all ages to reach their potential as musicians. I work with my students on sheet reading, key and time signatures, developing an understanding of harmonic and tonal concepts, and proper technique. My lessons are tailored to the student’s interests, goals and skill level.
I started my classical music training at four years old and continued formal lessons until high school. I grew up in a very musical household as my father is also a professional musician.
Through my formal training and my further study, I have built up a substantial knowledge of music theory. At 11, I began playing percussion instruments and played in my school band through college (Shanghai Jiaotong University). At 13, I earned my level 10 piano performance certificate, which is the highest level in China.
During my time at University, I toured with the band throughout Eastern Asia and Europe. I also performed for Hillary Clinton’s visit to Shanghai and have performed musical solos multiple times at the Shanghai Grand Theater.
In my spare time, I enjoy listening to and playing popular music and classical pieces, particularly
those by Bach and Chopin. For more information, please do not hesitate to ask.

She will play the chapter by herself to let me better understand the performance. Thanks to her professional instructions and patience, my playing skills have been improved a lot. I will recommend Lilan to everyone who would like to expect an improvement on their playing skills as well as receiving great instruction experience.

I have been teaching the piano since 2010 after graduating from the University of Maryland with a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering. My goal as a teacher is to provide students with the tools they need to succeed in their own musical journey, whether they pursue the piano for the rest of their lives, switch to other instruments, or decide to pursue other interests.
I started studying the piano when I was four and began participating in piano competitions in the 5th grade. When I was in 8th grade, I won first place in a concerto competition and was able perform my piece before a live audience, while accompanied by an orchestra. That opportunity helped me realize that I love sharing music with others, be they students, fellow musicians, or members of an audience. Throughout the years, I have pursued this love by playing the p
iano for/with friends and family, singing in choirs, and playing the violin in orchestras and ensembles. While attending the University of Maryland, I was a member of the Gamer Symphony Orchestra, where I sung with the choir and led the soprano and alto sections in rehearsal. Today, I also work as a piano accompanist and church musician, where I sing with the choir and play the violin, in addition to playing the piano.
Christine’s teaching style is just the right blend of fun, patience and structure. My daughters really enjoy taking lessons with her. They look forward to their weekly lessons and take time to practice in between. Christine is able to adapt her teaching style to each of their ability levels. We are very happy with our decision to work with Christine.
