I have extensively studied vocal performance for many years and continue to add to my own technique. I have a Master of Vocal Performance Degree from the Chicago College of Performing Arts. I currently work for a recording studio (Sound Summit Studios in Naperville IL) where I teach voice and help singers record their music in the studio. I have previously taught at The School of Rock in Indianapolis Indiana. I have administered vocal lessons to every voice type at all different levels. Several of my students have recored albums and are currently performing all over the U.S.

I have a bachelors degree in biology with a minor in art. After graduating college, I was a full-time high school biology teacher, volleyball coach, and director of the school musical. As a high school teacher, I learned first hand the kind of pressure and expectat
ions that are placed on students in order for them to succeed. In college, I was the head student researcher on a two-year lab project. I took several upper level science courses including: biochemistry, calculus, organic chemistry, calculus based physics, cell biology, anatomy, and physiology. I studied marine biology in the Virgin Islands and am CPR certified.

*** Lesson Details ***
Voice lessons with me are fun and effective. You can expect to hear improved technique from day one, eventually reaching your long term goals. I begin every lesson aligning the students voice through various vocal warm ups and exercises. We then work together to pick repertoire that will suit the singer'€™s voice and they will enjoy singing. During a lesson we will also cover performance presentation, acting, diction, rhythm, musicality, style, and interpretation.

During tutoring you can expect a personalized plan based on your goals and aspirations. Since every student is different you can be assured we will come up with a plan that is designed just for you. I am a laid back tutor but will be sure to get the most out of you after our time together. Most students see at least a one letter grade improvement. My main goal for every tutoring session is student learning and comprehension.

Ben is absolutely amazing! He has an astonishing amount of knowledge and a way of explaining and teaching that makes sense to me in a way that no instructor has ever done. My personal goal, as impractical as it may seem, was to be able to sing with a healthy vibrato and by the end of our first 30 minute lesson, I was able to sing a note with a healthy vibrato. Something as simple as “feeling spinning a ping pong ball in the back of the throat” made me able to produce this beautiful and rich sound. This is a small first step but a huge achievement that I was not able to achieve with months of lessons with other instructors in the past. This gave me such a rewarding feeling and gave me so much ambition to practice and improve. Bravo Ben! Bravo!

Ben has helped me tremendously over just a few lessons. Everything I thought I was supposed to do in order to sing properly was pretty much wrong. He is able to explain techniques very clearly in order for me to improve my singing voice. It has not been easy for me but he is very patient as well as demanding in order for me to reach my full potential. As you can see I’ve written a review for Matthew regarding my daughters success (her test was last year) so I’d like to write one for my son also. My son was not driving at the time and Matthew agreed to drive to our home and teach him for an additional nominal fee. My son also took multiple tutoring sessions with Matthew and learned something new every time. He felt confident going into the test, confident in his ability to complete the exam and do well on it. Matthew takes his time with each individual and works with their specific needs. My children needed help in different areas of the ACT and Matthew was more than capable of helping them in those areas. My sons ACT score also went up 4 points after working with Matthew! I can’t say enough how professional, kind and thorough he is.

I have 8 years of experience as a tutor, including a gap year running an after-school tutoring program for at risk youth. I'm a firm believer that, despite what many students believe, almost no one is "bad at math." 2) Academic Confidence – I’m always surprised by the number of students that I work with who honestly believe they aren’t smart or capable enough to succeed in school. So, part of my job as a tutor is to help those students understand that hard work and confidence are the key to success, so matter how difficult they find the work initially.

3) Love of Learning – This is perhaps the most important element to me. My favorite teachers were not the ones who managed to cram the most amount of information in my head, but those who helped me be excited about the subjects they taught. As a tutor, I work with students to develop excitement about the subject matter and a love of learning more generally.

Finally, here’s a bit more information about me. Currently, I'm a public health researcher at a large non-profit, and specialize in systematic reviews and project evaluation. I studied Sociology and Public Policy at UNC Chapel Hill. I graduated summa cum laude and received a Chancellor's award for excellence in my field of study. In the new few years, I plan to go back for a PhD in clinical psychology. I look forward to working with you or your student!

Josh was a very patient and a hands on tutor. He took time to get to know each student in order to better assist them personally. He had good boundaries with the students and was able to stay professional while being able to have fun with them. We saw personal gains based on the VA SOL test scores at the end of the school year after his assistance.

Both of my sons went from F’s to B’s with Josh’s help. We had all pretty much given up that they would be able to get good grades in math. We were just hoping Josh could get them to pass. We can’t say enough about Josh’s clear, understandable and relevant guidance. Yes, they got great grades, but he also made them feel confident in their abilities to do the work. He is wonderful!

I do not see teaching as simply repeating what has been already detailed in text books and lectures. Everyone’s mind is different and thus everyone has a unique perception to understanding one issue or another. Things are better illustrated with an example.

A while back, there was a television show hosted by a T.V. personality named Monty Hall. In the show, Monty presented a contestant with 3 closed doors. Behind one door was a new car. And behind each of the other two doors was a goat. The contestant had the option to choose one door so as to win the new car.

The probability that a car was behind door 1 or door 2 or door 3 was the same, about 33.33%. Let us say that the contestant picked door 1. Monty would then open one of the other two doors that were not chosen by the contestant. There were 3 terms in the game: 1) Monty knew what w
as behind each door; 2) Monty cannot open the door that was already chosen by the contestant; 3) Monty would only open a door that hides a goat.

Let us say Monty opened door 3 revealing a goat. Monty then asked the contestant if the contestant would like to switch to door 2 or keep his original choice of door 1. Contestants would be bewildered not knowing really what to do. Was it better to keep the originally choice or was it better to switch or it would make no difference whether to keep the original choice or switch?

Meet Marilyn vos Savant. Marilyn wrote a column called “Ask Marilyn” in a newspaper called Parade. Marilyn was known for having one of the highest recorded IQ. A reader sent Marilyn a letter asking her if it was better to switch or not to switch. Marilyn stated in her column that a contestant should switch since switching doubled the contestant’s chances of winning. Many of Marilyn’s readers erupted in protest including readers with Ph.D., mathematicians, and academicians. Most people believed that the probability that a car was behind door 1 or door 2 was the same of 50%.

This became known as The Monty Hall Problem or The Monty Hall Paradox. Articles and books were written over this problem. Actually Marilyn was right and this was proven using computer simulation. Yet until today many people cannot understand that switching doubles the chances of winning.

At first glance this paradox might seem irrelevant to teaching. But I think it does. This paradox tutor the mind in the subject of structured thinking which is very important in learning.
