About Jonathan S.

I've been playing and studying trumpet, it's studies, and repertoire since year 2000 (all through middle school, high school, and college). The exercises, techniques and tuneful melodies that I've taught students have helped them grow in their music community, whether it be in the school band or local church. All ages and skill levels are welcomed!
About Jonathan
I am a Florida native, active doctoral student, teacher and practitioner. My career includes performing and recording as a guitarist and teaching subjects such as music or math. Grade-school academic strengths in mathematics represent my enthusiasm for the subject. The math equivalent in music can be considered music theory, which is another passion of mine. I hope to take these well-rounded characteristics to teach and influence others with what I have learned in my education and career thus far.
Education & Teaching Experience:
I am currently pursuing my Doctorate of Musical Arts from Shenandoah University and hold a Masters of Music from the University of Akron and a Bachelor of Music from Stetson University (all degrees with a guitar performance emphasis). I also have a temporary teaching certificate for Music K-12 fro
Degrees:
Doctorate of Musical Arts: Guitar Performance; Shenandoah University, expected May 2017/2018
Master of Music: Guitar Performance; University of Akron, May 2014
Bachelor of Music: Guitar Performance; Stetson University, 2011
While giving lessons:
I ensure that every student receives fundamental foundation pertaining to the subject. While learning the basics, I advise that the student organizes their lessons and materials in a way that displays progress over time. With the proper knowledge, we can treat the heart of a subject with refinement in order to grasp it's purpose and reason---whether its music or math.
Why?
My students have grown with confidence through a sense of accomplishment. Success does not only affect a person's well-being but can also impact other dimensions of their lives.

*** Lesson Details ***
The focus of each lesson depends heavily on the level of each student... beginning students can expect a larger portion of the instruction to focus on fundamentals and music reading so as to lay a foundation for further success. For these students I will generally work out of an existing band method as these are more than adequate, and perhaps add a few supplemental materials which in include simple exercises specific to the instrument, scale patterns, and rhythm/musi
More advanced students can expect to review proper technique and work on appropriate etudes and solo repertoire. I spend a lot of time working on practice technique. Confidence building if necessary. If the student plays in a jazz band we can work on bebop/swing/improvisation as well.
*** Studio Equipment ***
I have a stand, tuner, metronome, and video and audio recording devices should we decide to use them.
*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide teaching materials and can bring a music stand. Student needs working instrument, and should own a tuner, metronome, and music stand. For a tuner/metronome I recommend a Korg TM-50. Nearly anything will do for a stand but I'd avoid a flimsy fold-up stand. I recommend an On-Stage SM7211. Can't go wrong with a Manhasset black stand either.
*** Specialties ***
Classical solo repertoire and audition preparation. Blues and bebop improvisation. Musicality and lyricism. Technique.

As a colleague of Chris' I can heartily recommend his teaching to any trombonists wishing to hone their skills as musicians. Chris focuses on the individual needs of each student, working to tailor his lessons to meet their specific needs and face their unique challenges. His attention to detail and patience helps each student build a strong foundation in musicality and fantastic brass playing. I recommend him highly as both a superb educator and performer!

My son is 12 years old, has been playing Trumpet and Flugelhorn for about 5 years, and he needed a private instruction to take his music to the next level. He has made great progress under Chris' guidance, and his easy going manner has made our son feel very comfortable with the lesson environment. He is very talented, and would highly recommend Chris for anyone looking to further their capabilities.

I currently teach trumpet at the New School for Leadership and the Arts, but I have many years' experience teaching music to students of all ages. I teach to the abilities, passions, and ambitions of the student(s).
About Gio
I have been teaching guitar, drums, and piano for about eight years to students of all ages. Music is what I'm passionate about and it's what I enjoy. I want to inspire that same passion into the hearts and minds of others.
*** Lesson Details ***
I am a laid-back teacher, fun, and I focus on the needs, abilities, and ambitions of the student. In turn, students must realize that learning an instrument takes a lot of work and dedication. One can't expect to learn very much if s/he only practices or thinks about the instrument during the lesson. If the student is willing to put some time into practicing, then I will help them go far!
*** Studi
I have several guitars, a drum kit, djembe, mandolin, clarinet and full-size keyboard.
*** Specialties ***
Guitar: Classical, jazz, American or Irish folk, rock and pop; lead or rhythm.
Drums & Percussion: All genres
Piano: Classical (includes sight reading)

I believe that all instruments are a direct extension of the human voice. With that in mind, my goal is to develop a student’s individual voice through the instrument they have chosen to express themselves. Rather than focusing on technique alone my method focuses on expression of ideas and emotions through music.

I am an experienced trumpet teacher who has had the privilege to study with some of the foremost trumpet instructors including Charlie Geyer and Barbara Butler while at Northwestern University.
I focus on 5 primary areas in my lessons to provide the student with a solid core for lifelong growth through music:
1. I help players develop an efficient playing style that focuses on proper breathing, breath control, body positioning, embouchure, tongue positioning, and air flow.
2. I help players develop excellent technique and help players develop multiple approaches to handling technical passages.
3. I help players understand and develop musical concepts and an approach to their own sound.
4. I help players prepare for auditions at all levels, up to professional auditions.
5. Last, I help players understand how to teach themselves to be better so that they can continue to grow musically throughout their lives.
About Nathaniel
For individuals who are preparing for conservatory auditions, I can help you develop the nuances that are essential when approaching the classic repertoire.
My goal is for you to have confidence and a solid sense of musicality during your audition so that you can present your best self.
