Basics of the language of music, also instrument specific

About Lynn
Whether  you are 5, 25, or  perhaps 75 years old when you make the decision to enter the world of music, you will be changing your life for the positive.

Your relationship with music & your chosen instrument is unique &
will  be life long.  I look forward to sharing  your
excitement as we pursue the path to comfort, confidence & the
eventual, inevitable joy you will achieve with your new friend.

*** Lesson Details ***
In a calm, easy going atmosphere you can expect to laugh a bit, as it is called 'playing music', as well as become focused & disciplined to succeed.

You will learn to have an understanding of how to read & play a minimum of 3 songs each month, & will be picking up enough music theory as it applies to your instrument each week to feel confident & inspired to continue on as far as you desire.

We will learn h
ow to 'play well with others' in informal as well as more structured gatherings every few months, with no pressure, only compassion & encouragement.

For those wishing to join in the fun of playing bluegrass music, we will start out with technique exercises, scales, basic melodies & accompaniment patterns to prepare you to learn this unique & exciting style of American music. There are many gatherings in the area called 'Pickin' Parties' that I want to get you ready to participate in as soon as is humanly possible.

If you are one of those brave souls undertaking the lovely but challenging fretless instrument, the violin, my main focus is to get you started with the all the necessary basic techniques - holding the instrument & bow correctly, getting the best possible tone & pitch using efficiency & accuracy, mixed with a great deal of ear training & heart.

Specific songs you'd like to learn? Your reward for accomplishing what I deem necessary on whichever instrument you've chosen will be for us to then listen to & analyze your desired piece, & I will then write it out in either tablature or standard notation.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Lesson studio contains music stand, tuner, metronome, & there is easy parking in the well lit front lot.

All music theory concepts covered and utilized during lessons; scales and chord formations.

About Barbara
Music has been an integral part of my world, playing a major role in both my personal and professional life. I embrace the chance to be immersed in it, to share my enthusiasm for and expertise in the area of the music education experience, promoting creative development and student performance skills.

I am an original New Yorker but have lived in Virginia Beach for the past 12 years. I began studying piano at the age of 8 and have not stopped playing since. It is a gift and a joy to be able to share my love of music performance with people of all ages and abilities. I have also sung in many choirs in addition to performing professionally on the piano and the guitar, both as a soloist and ensemble member.

I rejoice in the success that I see in my students as they learn and gain an appreciation for the gift of music. They become more
and more eager to share and more and more open to the possibilities ahead.

*** Lesson Details ***
I listen well to my students. They are free and encouraged to express their goals and soon, they become more and more comfortable doing so. They begin to understand that even though I am their instructor, we are working as a team and that my goals for them are directly tied to the goals they have set for themselves.

My teaching style is natural, relaxed and yet, very enthusiastic, all at the same time. I have patience in abundance and my continual student affirmation is well received. I give most attention to personalizing instruction for each of my students. My passion for musical expression is contagious and readily shared. It is a joy to teach music, to contribute to the growth and delight that I witness through a student's progress.

I have taught music to both children and adults, from beginner to advanced levels. My teaching approach remains the same, save for the goals that suit the specific student, which we discover early on, sometimes even at the first session, together, right from the start. My beginning students receive the attention necessary to encourage their desire to persevere, which includes positive feedback (which is abundant) and a teaching style that fits his/her level of learning. My student's success is my goal. This is my jubilant mission.

Music theory is always incorporated into piano lessons. It is crucial to understand how music works. I will use theory to help you understand what you are playing and how to use it to your advantage when composing or writing songs.

About Robert
My names is Robert. I teach piano, voice, guitar, bass, and drums (beginner/intermediate/advanced and all ages starting as young as 5 - kids and adults alike. I've had ample experience in music performance - touring around the world playing concerts in countries like Indonesia, Australia, Russia, and Japan - was a touring member for the Norfolk based rock group, MAE (Capitol Records, Tooth & Nail Records). Currently I perform regular gigs around Hampton Roads, solo (MUSICPLAYER) and with bands (LADADA) and (DEJA). My expertise is piano and singing but I have a multi-instrumental understanding of music (proficient in piano, guitar, drums, bass, etc).

"My goal with each student is to help instill a desire and passion to explore the deeper side of music. I try to keep my lessons fun, exciting, and interactive. Music theory is crucial to
understanding music, but I also teach you how to sense the emotions in music as well as using your ear. I believe that each student has his or her own personal musical journey. I'm sensitive to that and want to give each student a head start on that journey. Teaching another person how to play, understand, and feel music is something that makes me come alive."

*** Studio Equipment ***
I own two digital pianos, both with weighted keys. And I recommend that each of my students has a piano of their own with weighted keys.

*** Travel Equipment ***
If need be I can bring a digital piano with me for in-home lessons.

***Booking Lessons***
When booking lessons please contact me beforehand to make sure I can accommodate your schedule. My calendar changes on a weekly basis.

I always will try to relate what we are covering to real-life musical examples, and I hope to instill a passion for musical discovery and analysis in all of my students. Whether you're wanting to get an edge-up for your AP Music Theory or college course, or if you finally wanted to understand how chords work together to create beautiful music, I'm the instructor for you!

About Adam
Adam has been teaching in various subjects since 2011, and is currently available to teach lessons at home or at your location of choice.

Adam started on Clarinet in 2nd grade, and then started learning guitar in 2009. He received his degree in Commercial Music at Azusa Pacific University, where he worked as a Music Theory Tutor, TA, and MIDI Lab technician.

Adam's teaching style encourages students to ask important questions, understand ideas at a conceptual level, and never to settle for "good enough" in place of "best." Lessons are always structured with your specific goals in mind, and can include a blend of a variety of topics to suit your needs.

I have an almost unhealthy passion for Music Theory, it's science, it's art, it's math and it's mind control. Why do we associate minor keys with sadness and major keys with happiness? What is a mode? But Noah, you said math was your worst subject in high school, why do you love the numbers of music theory? If you can get a solid understanding of intermediate music theory, you will unlock the potential to being able to play virtually any instrument and to write music in virtually any genre Lets do this!

About Noah
Berklee College of Music '16 - Voice principle, B.M. Songwriting
I have taken a lot of voice lessons with a lot of different teachers. Most teachers are hard and fast in their opinions about styles that are "worthy" or "not worthy" of teaching. I am confident in the fact that learning R&B is no better or worse than learning classical music, musical theater or jazz or rock. They ALL provide benefits to the voice, to the musician. I've sung and played in a wide variety of ensembles and styles myself, from psychedelic rock to 'Singin' in the Rain' to Jazz to classical arias, to synth pop. My goal is to find music that moves the student emotionally wether it was on the radio or not. From there we can mix in exercises and adaptations the emphasize vocal/musical health, musicianship and fun. After all, if it isn't fun or cathartic, why make mu
sic at all? I also play piano, electric bass and guitar, with a degree in Songwriting from Berklee CoM, so I'm well equipped to assist young singer/songwriters.

Comprehensive exploration of harmonic, melodic, and rhythmic theory, from the basics to the most esoteric.

About Mike
I've toured the world and lived to tell the tale!

Being on the road can be arduous and taxing, but it is the adventure of a lifetime. I've done it all, from roughing it up and down the eastern seaboard in a minivan with the Indie Rock band Busman's Holiday, to playing big stages in Botswana, South Africa, and the United Kingdom with Zimbabwean music legend Thomas Mapfumo and his band Blacks Unlimited. I even got my sea legs performing in the orchestra aboard the Island Princess and the Grand Princess cruise liners! The cruise ships sent me around the Mediterranean, across the Atlantic, through the Carribbean to Colombia, along the Panama Canal, up the coast of Mexico, and finally dodging icebergs on the Alaskan Coastline! And last but not least, I got the chance to play cutting-edge jazz at festivals in Taiwan and China.

As a friend of
mine once said, "Your horn is a magic wand. Just point it the direction you want to go, and it will take you there!" Truer words were ne'er spoken. If you want your music to take you places, studying with me is a great place to start.

Come join the music, and let's go places!
