Classical music-focused, fun and relaxed environment, experienced teacher with top conservatory background

About Jessica
Jessica moved to the Chevy Chase/Bethesda area in 2009, having grown up and gone to school in New York and Ohio. She loves the area, and she and her husband are thrilled to be putting down roots in the community. As a performer, Jessica has traveled around the world, but throughout her career teaching has been one of her most important focuses. "As a relative newcomer to the DC area, growing my private studio has been a great way to get involved in the community. My teaching style is individualized, but I always try to include two important things: building a strong basic skill set, and developing creativity."

*** Lesson Details ***
Whether your goal is to make it into All-State, give a solo recital, play tunes at family gatherings, or just try something new for the very first time, I will help you succeed and have a good time along
the way.

In my view, the most interesting thing about performing music is that it is one of the few activities that engages both the left and the right brain at the same time. With that in mind, my teaching places equal importance on developing strong technique, and developing creativity. Students learn all the basics of music, and also spend time developing strong ensemble skills and strong background knowledge of style and repertoire, so that they can enjoy music in all kinds of settings, all their lives.

Knowing from experience how "boring" it can be to learn by rote, I combine technical work with fun time playing duets together, improvising, and exploring a wide variety of styles and genres of music. After all, there is no experience so motivating as hearing a new piece that you HAVE to learn to play yourself!

*** Studio Equipment ***
lessons in either living room or upstairs office; Steinway baby grand piano in living room;

*** Travel Equipment ***
I expect piano students to have daily access to either a piano or a keyboard with 88 full-sized, weighted keys. Bass or cello students must have their own bass or cello.

*** Specialties ***
classical, baroque, renaissance

I really enjoy taking piano lessons with Jessica. It had been 40 years since I took lessons (as a teenager). Jessica's manner as well as her knowledge and love of music is just what I was hoping to find in a teacher. Her ability to explain musical concepts and her thoughtful approach to teaching has far surpassed my expectations. She gives great constructive feedback and ensures that you understand what she is saying. She is very positive and patient. I thoroughly enjoy my lessons with her and recommend her strongly.

I've been working with Nate for almost a year now in the band Mile Twelve, and my experience with him has been incredible. Not only is he a amazingly well-learned, proficient, and creative musician, but he's one of the most understanding and helpful guys that I know. I've learned so much from playing with Nate, and I know his students are in good hands.

Working with Nate is great! By working step by step through a couple songs I brought with me, and I noticed an across-the-board improvement in my playing after the first lesson. Plus, we have a good time of it!

Nate has a very good ear, and is quickly able to identify problems, and thoroughly explain how to fix them. Whether a technique thing, or subtle nuances in timing, or tone, Nate always finds the clear path to expressing the goal, and how to get there.
I'd recommend Nate to anyone seeking to improve their playing. The rest is practice, practice, practice.

Given the interactive nature of music and bass playing, we will also spend time developing good ensemble skills as well. We will work towards achieving your personal goals as a musician to develop a personal voice and have fun!

About Zach
My name is Zach, I have been playing bass for 21 years and hold a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Bass Performance from the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University. I love all types of music, and regularly perform and teach jazz, classical, folk, rock and experimental. My goal for students is give a well rounded background, allowing the student to develop a personal sound while gaining a thorough understanding of music fundamentals and theory. Lessons are tailored around students interests and goals, and I often hand write specific individual excercises for each student. We will also cover traditional concepts of bass technique, and use established methodology (and reference recordings!) for development. For double bass I teach German bow, though regularly use a Dragonetti bow in performance.

I have a double bass at my home stud
io available for use during lessons, a bass amp for electric, and an 88-key keyboard. Please reach out with any questions, thank you!

Being an active and experienced musician gives me the necessary knowledge to know what is needed on order to become a better musician. Also having over 20 years of teaching experience allows me to tailor my knowledge to the need of every particular student. I really enjoy to transfer my knowledge and solve the unique musical problem that every student encounter during their musical path.

About Andrea
Bassist and composer Andrea Veneziani performs extensively within the improvised music scene, across a broad spectrum of genres. His instrumental tone, sensitivity and imagination, and melodic approach to a supposedly clumsy instrument brought him to perform and record with many established musicians. Based in New York City, his work as an instrumentalist and composer can be regularly heard at the top jazz clubs in the city and around the globe.

As a current faculty member of the New York Jazz Workshop, Andrea Veneziani is a dedicated educator. He has taught master classes at the National Institute of Music and the National University of Costa Rica, at the Boğaziçi University in Istanbul, Turkey and at the Olav Duun Videregående Skole in Namsos, Norway. He also served as an adjunct professor at New York University, where he graduated i
n 2011 with a Master of Music Degree in Performance with a Concentration in Jazz as a Fulbright scholarship recipient.

My students can expect a loving, supportive, and encouraging atmosphere to learn a difficult instrument. We will go through the basics of hand shapes, learn how to navigate the neck with scales, and tunes that make the upright bass approachable.

About Oliver
I specialize in upright bass, jazz bass, funk bass, bass technique, and rhythm. I will inspire a positive attitude and good practice habits that will help any student succeed. I’ve extensively studied jazz, latin jazz, funk, rock music, hip hop, bluegrass, folk, and composition.

I can also teach guitar, piano, drums, and voice. As a mulit-instrumentalist, jamming with my students is a priority. Being able to play with other musicians is one of the best feelings you’ll ever experience. I’m happy to take you there!

Recently, I helped one of my bass players get a scholarship to go to Berklee Summer Camp to study music.

I am very excited to continue my teaching on TakeLessons. I look forward to helping new students to become the musician of their dreams.

I've been playing professionally in Chicago for five years. I am currently
co-manager, upright bass player, and singer for an ambient-folk band, Sedgewick, based in Chicago. I play upright bass in the Frank Catalano and Jimmy Chamberlin (drummer for Smashing Pumpkins) super group, 9 Worlds Ensemble, and Bowmanville.

The bass has been my primary instrument for the past 8 years and I absolutely love playing and teaching. My methodology is strong influenced by F. Simandl, Francois Rabbath and Max Johnk. The core of my curriculum includes basic right and left arm technique, tone production, and familiarity with the instrument. The warmth of the double bass is like none other and I love what it adds to a recording or live set. Thanks for visiting my page.

About Aaron
Hello, my name is Aaron and I love teaching music as much as playing. My strength lies in being able to adapt to different learning styles in order to maximize time spent in lessons. My love for music extends to each genre and would love to talk to you about your favorites. I have been playing and recording for the last 8 years in a variety of styles. Additionally, I have been transcribing quite a lot by ear for the past 4 years the likes of James Jamerson, Pino Palladino, and Esperanza Spalding. I hope to collaborate soon. Thank you.

Aaron took me from someone who could read notes off a page to someone who could think in terms of what sounds good together in a key and how to pick bass lines out of songs. After just a few lessons I was able to at some flair into what I played and it greatly increased my ability. 10/10 would take lessons again.

I'm a classically trained bass player and played in orchestra for 7 years while in school. I've taken music theory courses as well but my need for different music had me venturing out into the local venues of the metroplex. I've played with multiple bands playing country, blues, and rockabilly. I've worked on multiple albums with these artists. I have a deep love of metal and rock as well and love to incorporate as many styles as I can into what I play. I think I've had a wide musical experience that can give people a little bit of everything. I've been a musician for 13 years and hope I can add to someone's musical journey as many others have added to mine. You can always learn something from another person so let's teach each other and make us both better musicians.

About Austin
I'm a classically trained bass player who played in my school orchestra for 7 years, 5th grade till a senior in high school. I have taken music theory courses in school but I needed more when I started high school. I started to play in bands and have been in a few since then. I've played at venues all over the metroplex and been on multiple albums. I love to perform and try to play with as many people as I can. I've played for 13 years now and want to help others on their musical path just as many others have helped me. We can always learn from each other so let's become better musicians together!
