About Barbara
Music has been an integral part of my world, playing a major role in both my personal and professional life. I embrace the chance to be immersed in it, to share my enthusiasm for and expertise in the area of the music education experience, promoting creative development and student performance skills.

I am an original New Yorker but have lived in Virginia Beach for the past 20 years. I began studying piano at the age of 7 and have not stopped playing since. It is a gift and a joy to be able to share my love of music performance with people of all ages and abilities. I have also sung in many choirs in addition to performing professionally on the piano and the guitar, both as a soloist and ensemble member.

I rejoice in the success that I see in my students as they learn and gain an appreciation for the gift of music. They become more
and more eager to share and more and more open to the possibilities ahead.

I listen well to my students. They are free and encouraged to express their goals and soon, they become more and more comfortable doing so. They begin to understand that even though I am their instructor, we are working as a team and that my goals for them are directly tied to the goals they have set for themselves.

My teaching style is natural, relaxed and yet, very enthusiastic, all at the same time. I have patience in abundance and my continual student affirmation is well received. I give most attention to personalizing instruction for each of my students. My passion for musical expression is contagious and readily shared. It is a joy to teach music, to contribute to the growth and delight that I witness through a student's progress.

I have taught music to both children and adults, from beginner to advanced levels. My teaching approach remains the same, save for the goals that suit the specific student, which we discover early on, sometimes even at the first session, together, right from the start. I DO ask that a parent sit in on the lesson for my under age 10 students, at the beginning for sure, then at the child/parent's discretion. My beginning students receive the attention necessary to encourage their desire to persevere, which includes positive feedback (which is abundant) and a teaching style that fits his/her level of learning. My student's success is my goal. This is my jubilant mission.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I own 4 guitars, 1 classical, 2 acoustic/electric, and 1 electric, which I can provide for the lesson, if necessary.
I own a Baldwin Acrasonic piano.

Degrees held:
Indiana University Jacobs School of Music - MM, PD
Oberlin College and Conservatory - BM

I teach private piano lessons, music theory classes, and accompanying. Students of all ages/levels are welcome. My teaching method primarily focuses on the process of learning music. Students are encouraged to make manageable goals for each lesson so that they can feel a sense of achievement throughout the entire learning process. The smaller goals keep the students motivated constantly enabling them to become a better musician. By focusing on the process of learning, students are learning a set of skills that will enable them to learn pieces quicker and allow for a more rewarding end product. They also are able to apply these learning skills to many different areas of study, which enhances their personal growth.

About Danielle
Hello! My name is Danielle and I'm a strings teacher (don't worry - I teach the fun stuff too!). I've been playing violin since age 5, viola since age 13, and 'cello since age 18. I have Bachelors Degrees in Violin Performance and Music Education from James Madison University, and I play both Violin and Viola in Symphonicity, the volunteer orchestra in Virginia Beach.

I've taught everything from private lessons to private school to public school and am a truly passionate teacher. I currently teach general music, choir and strings at an elementary school but I love to fill my nights/weekends with private students - that's where the real fun is!

I've taught ages 4-44 and all skill levels. I take particular pride in developing technique and fundamental skills while keeping lessons light hearted and fun! It is my ultimate goal to spark
a love and passion for music in each of my students.

I always encourage students to explore music on their own and bring me repertoire that they'd like to play (from their favorite movies, TV shows, video games, etc.). Those are a great and engaging supplement to the solo repertoire I choose!

Send me a message to get to know more about me and my teaching. I look forward to hearing from you!
Musically,
Danielle

Tristi is an excellent teacher. She uses a great balance of positive comments about your performance and comments about areas that need improvement. She plays beautifully, which provides good models for learning. Her knowledge of composer's styles and the periods of music is excellent. She is also very personable.

About Elyse
I recently moved to the Peninsula from Texas, where I taught piano for the Texas Christian University Music Preparatory Division for five years. I earned my Masters of Music in Piano Pedagogy degree from TCU in 2014, and before that my Bachelors of Music in Piano Pedagogy degree from the University of Oklahoma. I have lots of experience teaching students of all ages and ability levels. My main goals are for my students to learn to read music, understand basic music theory concepts so they can apply them through improvisation and composition, use effective practice strategies to learn any piece they want to learn, and to always enjoy the process of learning to play piano. I also really enjoy tailoring curriculum to each individual students learning style and interests. I know that students who play music they enjoy will practice more and I
'm very willing to accommodate special learning requests.

About Richard
Hello my name is Richard Schroff and I am new to teaching piano (at least officially, for money). With me the emphasis will be on making things fun and enjoyable. Doing what you want to do, playing what you want to play and not forcing anything on you that you really don't like. A lot of teachers don't seem to realize that the most important thing you can to do to teach your student is to make things interesting. If the interest isn't there then the student won't pay attention, won't want to practice and won't learn much. My first task will be identifying what types of music you like to listen to and play. Once we identify this you can start learning the piano by focusing on the types of music you enjoy playing. I will also teach you music theory and composition if you are interested, as I have a thorough understanding of both. As for my
piano/music background I started playing piano when I was very young, about 8 or so and continued playing until 7th grade when I quit for a while. I quit playing because of the way I was taught by using level by level books with cheesy melodies that I was uninterested in. I started playing the piano again when I was 18 and was inspired by a Beethoven song. I quickly became obsessed with the piano finding out that I clearly have a natural talent for the piano that I never knew I had before. I soon became very skilled and a rather advanced pianist and would play composers such as Beethoven, Mozart, Chopin, Liszt and Rachmaninoff. At the level of skill I am at now I can easily play any Mozart or Beethoven sonata right away and can play virtually any piece at least at a reasonable speed. I have taken several Music Theory classes in college but have studied it more completely on my own and have composed a small amount of piano pieces. I feel I am good enough to teach some fairly advanced students, but because I am new to teaching the piano I would prefer you to be a beginner or intermediate level student. Thank You.

I am a student at Old dominion university and am currently double majoring in Music Education and Music Composition. I have an amazing passion for both performance and composition. I have been teaching younger kids since 2015 and plan to teach music in a school upon graduation. I am very comfortable working with younger kids, but I also enjoy teaching older students as well. I teach both classical and jazz styles of saxophone performance.
My approach to lessons is that the student learns best when they love the subject as much as I do. I make lessons both fun and productive by teaching the style of music the student is most interested, while also doing fun activities such as duets. My students can expect great progress in all elements of performance, while also learning a little music theory on the side.
I have performed in man
y ensembles including the ODU wind ensemble, jazz orchestra, and saxophone quartet. I also have composed many of my own original compositions, which have been performed by the ODU saxophone quartet. I also plan to compete in the annual young artist's competition in fall 2018.
I prefer to teach at the students house, and I am very flexible with my schedule.

A Beginner's Guide to Ukulele Tabs: How to Read Them and Where to Find Them
Want to learn some cool riffs on your ukulele? In this lesson, ukulele teacher Willy M. shares how you can read ukulele tabs and find them for your favorite songs... Hello, ukephiles! Ukephile (pronounced “you-keh-file”) is a new word I just invented deriving from “uke” for "ukelele" and “philo,” Greek for “to love;” so it means “lovers of the ukulele!” Anyway, I digress. One of the hardest things for ukephiles is finding tabs for songs that you want to play. Most of the time, we can f
Kids' Guitar Lessons: How Often Should My Child Practice?
Odds are that if your child is taking guitar lessons, your child chose to play the instrument. Unlike stringed instruments, piano, and classical instruments, kids usually choose to start playing guitar. Kids guitar lessons are a great start, especially when they are geared to your child’s age, but the only way your child will really progress with the guitar is through regular practice. Practicing is a unique challenge when it is an instrument that a child chooses to play. People tend to t
