Ear Training Lessons in Arcola. Amazing Teachers.

Ear Training was a huge part of my college experience. As a Jazz musician, being able to hear the musical context of your surroundings and adapt to them is hugely important. My methods include fun and challenging ways of memorizing pitch relationships that don't necessarily require an in depth knowledge of pitches.

Not everyone can play an instrument or sing "by ear", however, there is a process by which you can improve your ability to "hear" the nuances of music, from identifying intervals to identifying keys. This can be especially important when trying to emulate your favorite songs. This training is part of all my instrumental lessons, but can be taught as a separate skill.

I teach ear training using the movable doe solfege system. This system is what is used at most contemporary music schools. It is ideal for jazz, and pop as well as country and other similar styles. If you plan to attend a classical conservatory this will most likely not be the system used.

Using a Kodaly based approach, students will learn to identify melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic elements and ultimately to be able to read music from written notation.

Ear training encompasses perceiving how sounds are moving so that it can be sung, notated, or played back. Conversely, training the ear enables one to mentally hear notated music in advance of playing it. This valuable skill speeds all aspects of musical learning.

Students can expect a theoretical based solfeggi training, developing their tonality and ability to transcribe music.

My approach is experiential. There's no substitute for pragmatic workout sessions and very specific exercises to practice regularly between lessons. And of course this invaluable aspect of musical training should also be FUN.
