I have been playing cello for 20 of my 31 years and am certified in the acclaimed Suzuki Method. I love the instrument and take great pride is sharing it with my students of all ages and abilities. Together we will break down technique into fun and manageable steps to build your ability and joy at playing this beautiful instrument!

About Caitlin
I am a life-long musician and active performer that moved to Salt Lake City in the summer of 2015 from Chicago, IL. I've been playing music since age 5 and have variously studied piano, cello, and percussion. As a double major in Anthropology and Music at Lawrence University (Appleton, WI), I am drawn to music as a creative cultural phenomenon that resonates between all people and it is for this reason that I love to share, teach, and learn music with others. As I build a studio here in SLC I am excited to share my love of cello and piano and my commitment to making music fun as I work to build students into life-long musicians.

My primary instrument is the cello and I have performance experience as a soloist, as well as orchestral and chamber musician. Upon arriving in Chicago in 2010, I served as Principal Cellist with the Universit
y of Chicago Symphony Orchestra for two years and took gigs as a classical and improvisational chamber musician throughout the city. In addition to my private studio, I was the primary cello instructor at Musical Chairs Studio, Inc. and Ortegan School of Music in Chicago.

I am also a percussionist and teacher with Salt Lake City's Samba Fogo, an afro-Brazilian music and cultural organization. I have studied Brazilian music with some of the major musicians and scholars in the field at California Brazil Camp in Cazadero, California. My training in percussion has brought an entirely new perspective to my musical practice that highlights rhythmic fluency and precision as a foundational element for both left and right hand stringed instrument technique.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am excited to offer lessons to people of all ages and ability levels and have experience teaching within and beyond the Suzuki Method approach.

Lessons are tailored to each student’s experience, individual needs, and most importantly, their goals! Lesson plans will combine interactive rhythmic, singing and listening exercises away from the instrument with music theory and technique-building exercises. The aim is to cultivate musicians with strong rhythmic, aural, and technical foundations and great problem solving skills that will open many doors as you or your child grow into your talent.

I aim to develop well-rounded musicians and performers by focusing on these 5 teaching priorities:
1. Balanced posture of body including instrument and bow hold
2. Balanced tone production or "tonalization"
3. A system of "perfect" or excellent intonation
4. Artistic musicianship in performance
5. Learning notes and bowings to new pieces

While learning notes and bowings is lowest on the priority list; it must be taught first! Fun listening games aid in the development of aural memory as I help students acquire listening skills that will stay with them for years to come and allow them learn to play any tune they can imagine. Once my students can do the note choosing on their own we are free to focus on the other teaching priorities during lesson time.

I also focus on teaching my students how to practice efficiently and use excellent problem solving skills! We want to get the MOST improvement with the LEAST amount of practice time. I like to combine practice at the instrument with games and exercises that can be done away from the instrument to give each student a degree of flexibility for those busy weeks when it's hard to find time to sit down and play. Students leave each lesson with a detailed practice plan that breaks down the difficult question of "what" and "how" to practice into a clear, concise checklist of familiar exercises. Students will also have suggested YouTube videos to watch some of the best musicians of all time and learn from their mastery of technique and musicality!

*** Additional Information***

I also have experience with extended and amplified cello techniques using loop and distortion pedals to layer and explore the variety and versatility of the cello.

*** Travel Equipment ***
2015 Subaru Forester that will get me to your lesson with all my instruments and any other equipment each and every time!

I travel to lessons with a music stand, metronome, and all teaching materials that would be present at a lesson taught in my home or studio.

Wonderful! I haven't seen my son this excited about the future of his music in a very long time. She helped him correct a few issues and listened to what was important to him in continuing his musical journey then made a bit of a plan to continue forward. She even stayed a little longer to help with a piece he will be performing in a couple of weeks. She seems to have a very strong classical base but has expanded into other areas, which is exactly what my son needs at this time.

Daniel Tressel is an exceptional musician and teacher who has been providing cello lessons to my son for the past five years. Under his direction, my son has reached a level of play that is far beyond what he would have attained through his school orchestra program alone. Daniel is professional yet very personable and tailors his instruction to the needs of the student. His critiques are effective and nonjudgmental, guiding the student to improve with each lesson. He is always punctual and is timely with communication. I am delighted with how much my son has progressed as a musician under Daniel's direction. I highly recommend him as an instructor.

Daniel is a patient and thorough teacher. He provides structured lessons with enough flexibility to address any specific difficulties a student is encountering; either with the lesson material, or material from any activities the student participates in. Personally he has helped with technical bits from music I've played at church as well as music from a youth orchestra I belong to.

As a cellist with 16 years of playing experience and 4+ years of teaching I have learned that music can change your life at any age and even can help you heal from whatever struggles life throws at you. Music and learning an instrument can improve your brain functions in a way that no other activity can accomplish. I am so passionate about teaching and customize my teaching style to each student individually because the same approach does not work for everyone. I strongly believe in that and try to get to know my students, who they are, what their strengths and weaknesses are and how I can help to overcome those. I get very involved with my students and build a personal relationship with each one of them to further help them with cello. I've had some wonderful instructors myself including Amir Eldan and Hans Jensen who taught me not only how to play the instrument itself but also how to use those skills that come with being a musician in life.

Experienced teacher of 3 years with a specialization in beginning/intermediate cello students. Lessons will cater to the needs of each individual student with a focus on a strong technical foundation. As a teacher, I concentrate on engaging students in their learning and aspire to inspire students to discover the joys and benefits of learning music. Not only will students learn to play the cello but they will have instruction in note reading, music theory and ear training. I believe that music should be enjoyable for students and strive to make meaningful connections with my students, positively influencing their musical lives.

About Naomi
I am a performer and teacher, specializing in cello. I graduated with a bachelor and master degree in music performance (cello) from Ball State University (Indiana). While a student, I had a multitude of teaching experiences ranging from music theory, music history, ear training, and English as a Second Language.

For the past three years, I have taught beginning/intermediate cello students. My teaching experiences began at a non-profit community music camp, Music for the Sake of Music, in Green Bay, Wisconsin. During this experience, I found a passion for teaching beginning students because of the fundamental need to provide a solid foundation. These early teaching experiences also inspired my teaching philosophy. Students can expect to focus on technique while simultaneously working on challenging and exciting repertoire. Although ther
e is an emphasis on strong fundamentals, I strive to demonstrate the fun and beneficial qualities of studying music. Music should not be a chore but rather a source of creativity and enjoyment.

I am open to teaching students of all ages and levels, although the majority of my experience is in beginning and intermediate levels. I've studied the cello for 14 years. I have experience in tutoring music theory, sight-ear (ear training), and music history. Also, I have been certified through the National College Learning Center Association, completing training that emphasizes engagement of students. Through this training I've learned how to help students learn independently and overcome challenges through trial and error. In music, these skills foster efficient practice techniques that often lead to a quickly developed technique.

As a performer, I have played in many regional orchestras throughout Indiana such as the Lafayette Symphony Orchestra, Muncie Symphony Orchestra, and Kokomo Symphony Orchestra. I also have experience performing outside of a classical setting, especially in recording. In previous years I have recorded on pop albums for independent artists and composers. My most notable experience includes recording with Tony Award winning actress and singer, Sutton Foster on her newest album Take Me to the World.

Studying music is not about achieving perfection; it is about creativity and joy and obtaining skills that transfer to numerous fields. I look forward to meeting you and helping you develop a wide variety of skills that will enrich many parts of your life.
