I like to teach my students all the fundamentals of guitar such as chords, scales, rhythm, and theory. Along with that, we'll go over how to practice such techniques in a tangible manner catered to what you're interested in. Most importantly, we'll work on the application of what you'll learn towards real life situations. Whether it's for a top 40's gig, writing your next song, or having a jam session with your friends and family, I'll help make it happen!

About Allen
Hello! My name is Allen and I've been playing guitar for 16 years, and teaching for the past 10. I've been performing and writing since the age of 16 with bands in many styles. I'm originally from Santa Maria, CA, and I obtained my knowledge of music theory, performance, and songwriting skills from taking private lessons in the central coast at a place called Coelho's Academy of Music. Our head instructor, Jerry Coelho, was a student of the late Howard Roberts and was one of the first graduating students to who helped to establish Guitar Institute of Technology (GIT), currently known as The Musicians Institute. After dedicating 4 years of private lessons under Jerry and his other top instructors, my hard work payed off and I was given the opportunity take students of my own. For the following two years, I've managed to consistently teach
40 students per week. I decided to move forward and take my musical experience with me to San Diego, where I currently teach, write, record, and perform my music with others who have similar goals and aspirations. I love playing in as many bands as possible. The main one I play in is called Quel Bordel. Some of the bands I've played in have given me the opportunity to perform with local and big named artists such as D.J. Artistic, Gary Wilson of Stones Throw Records, The Aristocrats, Terry Bozzio, Alan Holdsworth, and Tony Levin. As a full time musician and performer, I'm typically out gigging anywhere from 2-5 a week. As a teacher, I'm here to help you with where you want to be with guitar. Whether it's rock, pop, funk, hip hop, reggae, jazz, blues, indie, folk, and country, I can help you with the technical and theoretical side of things.

*** Lesson Details ***
My goal- To get you to become better than me. I find myself as an easy going teacher, and can provide that push when I see students getting more engaged in their lessons. I typically teach out of two main books, and it's optional for students to have their own copy of my recommended method books. I emphasize heavy chord vocabulary and steady rhythm. I believe that in order to be a good lead player, you would have to be a great rhythm player. As we develop technique, you can expect me to incorporate theory as to maintain an even share of the HOW's and WHY's. Moreover, expect to DO something with our lessons. Repetition is the mother of learning, and sometimes it comes down to the idea of 'monkey see, monkey do' before we can have in depth conversations about the application of your lessons in real situations. To me, music is very creative. So I'm a big believer on improvisation with both chords and scales. I believe in practical application when learning the songs you want to learn. So every student will have a unique way of learning the fundamentals only necessary to their personal goals.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Two small practice amps, cables, method books (personal copies), extra picks, extra guitar, music stand, blank sheet music/tabs for notes, extra strings, music stand, metronome, tuner

*** Travel Equipment ***

For those who want to learn at the intermediate/advance level, I use the book called Jazz and Pop Guitar (chords and progressions) and Scales and Modes in the Beginning which can cover all aspects of chord theory and improvisation. I model my curriculum off of my prior lesson plans from my teachers ( based off of Berklee and GIT) My genres specialize in rock, funk, jazz, indie rock, folk, country, blues, pop

My daughter is very shy which is why she won't try new things very often. However, after her first lesson with Allen she was excited. She said he made the lesson very fun and made her very comfortable. She learned her first two chords and is eager to practice transitioning between the chords and is looking forward to her next lesson with Allen.

Cary is an incredible instructor 😊 We've been impressed with how quickly both of our boys have been able to learn and play the guitar without ever having any other previous lessons. Cary is very encouraging and patient. Both of my boys have completely different learning styles and abilities. I appreciated how Cary knew exactly how to meet each of their needs individually and help build confidence in their ability to perform and to recognize their individual strengths versus comparing their learning level. Cary has a passion for music and teaching and it clearly shows in his instruction. I've had no reservation of highly recommending him to friends and family who have also been pleased with their experience and results.

I found Zach through 'take lessons' after my daughter had a few years with an intense classical pianist. I want my daughter to have fun and appreciate music and not feel the intense pressure she was feeling with our previous instructor. Zach was the perfect choice. My daughter loves her lessons. Zach does take time off for his professional endevors. Good for him. He has always let us know and connected with us when he returns.

Students learn notation, tab, theory and chords. They will play entire songs along with recordings by their favorite artists. Later they will learn how to improvise a solo or play one from a recording. Fingerpicking styles will also be taught as well as how to chord in the correct style for the music.

Other students may have a specific goal and a custom curriculum will be created to get them there fast. Students are encouraged to listen, keep solid rhythm, try different styles, and have fun.

About Mike
Hi. My name is Mike J. I am a full time music instructor with over 30 years of experience teaching, performing and writing music. I teach both steel string guitar (acoustic or electric) and classical (nylon string) guitar as well as the electric bass and the ukulele.

I incorporate music theory into my lessons but can also teach theory by itself.

I cover rock, folk, pop, blues, jazz, gospel, country or classical. I teach fingerpicking and flat-picking. I strive to find a good balance each lesson between the study of reading, technique and music theory and learning songs you know and like.

I have had excellent results with this approach so that typically ¼ of my students have stayed and studied with me for over 3 years!

Here's an article I wrote on some of the reasons I enjoy teaching:

I tailor my lessons to meet student goals. I help students learn basic chords and strumming patterns, learn to sing while playing, understand how to read notes, tabs and chord charts, understand power chords and basic music theory, play popular songs of the past or present, learn basic scales and improvisation skills, and even write their own songs! You can search my music on Spotify or iTunes for a sample of my style. My album is called "Songs from Pablo's Attic."

I lived in Italy for more than 2 years and have worked as an Italian teacher and tutor for 5 years. I have been playing guitar and making music for 19 years. Peter is an excellent one-on-one teacher for Italian. Based on his background, I'm not surprised to find him very knowledgable about the language as it is currently spoken. In our sessions, he often explains the nuances of words and phrases based on usage, is careful to guide correct pronunciation and adds in multiple phrases of common speech. He has assembled a workbook that is well-organized and clear; we have progressed through it week by week and it has a nice feel of building a usable knowledge of key verbs, words and phrases. Peter is great at teaching and sharing what he knows, and on top of all of this he is flexible to the student's pace, needs and interests. We paused in our progress through the workbook to focus on specific topics like directions, clothing, colors, food, the urban setting, etc. Weekly he sends me sentences via a Google doc and I work and them and send my translations into Italian back--works great! I am excited to have Peter as my teacher and I think you will be, too. I plan on working with him through the course and beyond. Grazie mille, Peter!

I teach all genres of guitar ranging from rock, pop, alternative, jazz, acoustic, and acoustic finger style. I have 12 years of extensive study in guitar, music theory, with a focus in jazz guitar. I have performed in several different bands including lead guitarist for 4 consecutive years in high school jazz band. I am able to teach whatever students desire to learn. Every lesson is recorded on audio and given to the student for future reference and record. I'm excited to be accepting new students and can't wait to meet you!

About Nathan
I am a 23 year old musician. I have studied guitar for 12 years. 8 of those years were spent studying under the instruction of Mike Smith who graduated from the U of U in jazz guitar. 1 year was also spent studying specifically jazz guitar under the instruction of Ben Mathews, an adjunct professor at Utah State University. I have also played in several bands and enjoy writing my own music on a daily basis.

I have played all genres and style of guitar, but specialize in acoustic finger style (such as the music played by Tommy Emmanuel), as well as jazz guitar. I love rock, pop, alternative, and jazz. These are the genres I spend the most time with.

Most of all I have a passion for playing, performing, and writing music for guitar. I love every moment I get to be able to play with other people and share the knowledge and experience I
have gained playing and performing for others.

Along with guitar I have played piano since the age of 7, joined the orchestra at age 12 playing the bass, moved on to clarinet and tenor saxophone, and played as the lead jazz guitarist in the high school jazz band for 4 years. I am also formally trained in music theory. Having studied under individual instructors for over half my life I have a firm grasp of the necessary steps and skills needed to progress as a guitarist and musician. All lessons are recorded and shared with the student to keep for future use and practicing.
