I cannot learn something without wanting to immediately begin sharing what I know. That's what inspired me to begin teaching, and it continues to drive me today.

My credo is, "Take fun seriously." There is a reason we say that we "play" music; it is meant to be entertaining, for the listener and the performer. I know you want to learn to play an instrument so that you have one more pleasure in your life, and not to take up a new profession. But I also assume the highest potential in my students. If something is worth learning, it's worth learning well. My goal is for people to say to each other, "There seem to be a lot of good guitarists coming out of the Madison area. What's in the water?" My bottom line: Whatever your personal objectives, it is my job to discover them and help you meet them, whether you're interested performing at the campfire or the concert hall.

If you do not live nearby, we can learn together through online chat via FaceTime, Skype, or Google Hangout. I ...

When the lesson started we got right to the point and decided the best direction to take with the limited experience I have. I have goals for the next lesson and something to work with and someone to help me along the way.

Students learn notation, tab, theory and chords. They will play entire songs along with recordings by their favorite artists. Later they will learn how to improvise a solo or play one from a recording. Fingerpicking styles will also be taught as well as how to chord in the correct style for the music.

Other students may have a specific goal and a custom curriculum will be created to get them there fast.

Students are encouraged to listen, keep solid rhythm, try different styles, and have fun.

About Mike
Hi. My name is Mike J. I am a full time music instructor with over 30 years of experience teaching, performing and writing music. I teach both steel string guitar (acoustic or electric) and classical (nylon string) guitar as well as the electric bass and the ukulele.

I incorporate music theory into my lessons but can also teach theory by itself.

I cover rock, folk, pop, blues, jazz, gospel, country or classical. I teach fingerpicking and flat-picking. I strive to find a good balance each lesson between the study of reading, technique and music theory and learning songs you know and like.

I have had excellent results with this approach so that typically ΒΌ of my students have stayed and studied with me for over 3 years!

Here's an article I wrote on some of the reasons I enjoy teaching:

I have learned so much from Mike in almost a year. He knows so much about the guitar and music theory. Without Mike I would not have progressed as much as I have. Mike has been awesome and very patient. He listens to me when I tell him what I need to work on. I would recommend him a million times over!!!

Angel was excellent with our 6 yr. old Granddaughter beginner. She was a little apprehensive at the beginning, however Angel had the ability to put her at ease and by the end of the session, she was very comfortable. We highly recommend Angel for his professionalism and teaching ability. She is very anxious for the next lesson!

Students can expect to learn at an easy and thorough pace. With my lessons, you can take your time no rush. I will work with every student one on one. Each lesson will be well planned and organized, but also it will be fun. If you don't understand something, I will work so that you do understand it. There is no pressure in learning. You can work at your own pace. Looking forward to working with each and everyone of you.

About Tanesha
Hello There!

Prices have been recently updated!

If you are under the age of 18, please have a parent or guardian book the lessons for you.

My name is Tanesha. I have been playing guitar for a little over 7 years now. I am a self taught guitarist. Guitars have always been a passion of mine, ever since I could remember. I was always drawn to learn more on guitars and one day decided to teach myself. I wanted to teach myself to play so that I can develop my own teaching style, as well as my own methods of teaching. When you are an absolute beginner and you look to learn from other people, their way of teaching can be a little challenging. But with my teaching style it is more broken down. I understand the struggles and difficulties that comes with learning guitar, that's; why I am here to break it down and teach as clea
rly as possible. I am a very caring person, I love to help others and love to see them improve daily. My main goal is for all of my students to learn and benefit from my teaching. I love when students are excited and eager to learn more. Putting effort is very important in order to succeed. if you don't put effort, it will not work.

You can expect to learn the following things:
-Parts of the Guitar
-Song Tutorials
-Picking Patterns
-Strumming Patterns
-Notes on the Guitar
-Chords
-Tablature
-Watch video lectures
and Much More!

The acoustic guitar was the instrument I first fell in love with at age 12. I've been playing hours everyday since. I love to teach the acoustic guitar and see my students get the same passion I have.

About Jacob
My name is Jacob and I've been playing music ever since I was about 12. I fell in love with it and have played music everyday for hours ever since. It's a huge privilege to teach others the same passion. Over 6 years ago I quit my full time job working with troubled youth to teach music full time at my studio, Inside Out Studio. We now have over 200 happy students and 13 teachers. I have a few available times during the day that I'd like to pick up a few more students. We are an award winning studio for our teaching and our students are often the same. I personally teach acoustic and electric guitar, bass, keys/piano, and mandolin. I love teaching all ages, including adults. Thanks for your interest and let me know if you have any questions.

Whether you're tackling singer-songwriting, accompaniment, pop/rock, jazz/funk/r&b, or even classical exercises, I can help you. I've studied piano/voice/guitar long enough to know what each kind of instrumentalist/vocalist needs. I'm well versed in a overview of all genres and styles, as well as specialized areas of study. As a writer, I'm also very familiar with coaching instrumentalists geared towards composition and arranging. If you're looking to improve your skills, I can help!

About Jake
I want to teach the material that excites students. After a handful of really crummy experiences with teachers who wanted me to learn a specific way, I stumbled across a music school in Philadelphia and a college in Boston that really got the principle of teaching what students are drawn to. Bruce Springsteen wrote, "we learned more from a three minute record than we ever learned in school." Although I don't agree with that on all occasions, there is something so special about hearing something that makes you tick and going, "ok let me listen to that again, and now let me figure out HOW I can do that myself." As a teacher, I'm flexible, focused, and also love to have fun with music. It's something that makes us excited and alive; there's no use in pursuing something you love if you don't equally enjoy the process of getting great at
it. So let's find what makes YOU excited about music, and let's figure out out to make you great at it.

The Acoustic Guitar is just such an awesome instrument. I can show you how to healthily play a number of styles. From specific pedagogy to just helping you sing and play chords, I got you.

About Kenny
I am a professional working musician and a licensed K-12 instructor in the State of Louisiana, having graduated from Loyola University New Orleans with a Bachelors of Music Education, with a Minor in Jazz Studies in the spring of 2016. I play the guitar (electric, steel/ nylon string acoustic), the trombone (tenor/ bass), and the drums (kit).
Guitar students can and should expect to improve in some facet every week after every lesson. Every person approaches music differently, and thereby, approaches the guitar differently. Different bodies mean different physical methods for successful playing. Different brains mean different musical realities- and whatever the state of yours is, I want to help you make it better.
There are so many different ways to be musical, and as your teacher I want to make you aware of them, and help you use every
tool in your toolbox, as well as give you some new ones. Music is not too vast to understand, and all it takes is one little push to be off on your way, making your own musical adventures.
As someone who has thrived in most ensemble scenarios from Concert Bands, Orchestras, Big Bands, to Rock Bands and Jazz Combos, I can help prepare you for any musical undertaking. I love students who love music and want to get better at it, regardless of what style it might be in.
So whoever you are, whatever you like, and wherever your skills are at, I want to help- to impart you with skills and knowledge you might need to play at the level you want. I look forward to meeting you and helping you be even more awesome!

My sole initiative and expectation is to delivery quality, student focused music education. The student and I will build a solid foundation by getting to know the fundamentals of the instrument, building muscle memory, practice, and having loads of fun in the meantime.

Learning music can be challenging and daunting, and I always strive to create a low pressure and highly engaging and encouraging environment for positive personal growth. Learning music is not just about the music, it’s a creative outlet and a way to express yourself and learn more about who you really are. I take great pride in being able to be a part of cultivating that experience.

My teaching style follows the Montessori method; the focus is on fostering learning where the student is larger part of the process. Each student learns at a different pace, is interested in different goals, and has individual and unique needs. I take the care to listen and guide, giving each student unique curricula to work from. ...

About Corey
I started my musical journey in Elizabeth, CO when I was in 6th grade playing the trumpet. From that point on I knew that music was always going to be a huge part of my life. I come from a family of musicians and artists and have developed a strong appreciation for art as a fundamental part of our lives. Art is a great form of expression and communication, and in some ways a means of therapy.

After playing trumpet and then moving on to the French horn, my instructors could see my dedication and growth within the craft. They are the ones who really helped push me in the direction I went in and their encouragement and dedication impacted my life in such a positive way. I started studying jazz and playing in the high school jazz band. From there I wanted more, so I auditioned for a magnet high school in Denver, the Denver School of the
Arts. After transferring to DSA I was able to form incredible bonds with teachers and educators.

Being so inspired by those who helped guide and teach me I decided that I wanted to teach and pass on the same care and guidance I received. I began teaching private lessons at the age of 16 and had many students from ages 6 to 45. It was there that I developed a passion for working with youth.

After High school I was accepted with scholarship to the Berklee College of Music in Boston MA. At Berklee I was able to study under some of the best musicians in the world and focus my studies on education and performance. It was during my time at Berklee that I had discovered after school music education opportunities in Boston, and went from volunteering to running a summer camp, and eventually becoming the Music Program director working with funding from an amazing group called the Music and Youth initiative. As Music director I taught youth age 8-18 in a variety of settings. I also played a major role in creating literature and teaching guides for the program. One on one instruction, group lessons, recording studio time, ensembles, and seasonal showcases were all ways to teach and guide our students.

I absolutely love teaching guitar! With ten years of experience I’ve learned about many styles of music and what it means to make each style unique. From reading music to learning music by ear I feel confident in my ability to get you playing guitar in no time.

About Cary
Born in Fairfax, VA, bassist Cary Miga fostered a love for music and performance in Portland, OR. Attending David Douglas High School opened the doors for his performance in jazz band, choir, orchestra, and musical theater. Cary supplemented his jazz education by studying with Grammy award winning educator, composer, and trumpeter Dr. Thara Memory in the American Music Program. Pushed to pursue music as a full-time career, Cary studied with world-renowned musicians such as Darrell Grant, George Colligan, Alan Jones, Andre St. James, Tim Gilson, and Phil Baker. Upon graduating from Portland State University with a degree in Performance for Jazz Bass, Cary now performs in the vintage pop band Jacob Miller & the Bridge City Crooners which frequently travels for events such as the Seaside Jazz Festival, Coos Bay Jazz Festival, Treefort Music
Festival, Doe Bay Music festival, and Folklife Music Festival. While in his hometown, Cary freelances throughout the city at venues such as Raven & Rose, Solaes Lounge, Hotel Vintage, Laurelthirst Pub, and Secret Society.

Cary is an awesome some teacher! I'm in my 60's and started learning the bass, something I've always wanted to do. He was very practical and patient, able to break the needed skills down into do-able steps. He listened to my goals, not just truing to replicate what he does. He's a great teacher for someone who doesn't have an extensive music background, helping me see patterns and connections that made learning much easier and rational. To me, the surest sign of a great teacher is one the when the lesson is over, the student feels fired up, eager to do more and has a growing sense of pleasure and possibility in their playing. That describes Cary as a teacher. I'm SO fortunate to have found him!

If you are interested in Bluegrass and Country music then I am your gal! I have been playing guitar for nine years. I've taken private lessons for all nine years with Jake Workman, the lead guitarist for Ricky Skaggs. I've been teaching guitar for about two years and I love it. I mainly teach Bluegrass but I am willing to teach basically anything that interests you.

About Tessa
My name is Tessa Sigrest. I am 19 years old. I live in Utah with my husband, we are both currently going to school and working. I enjoy playing guitar, fishing, hunting, and spending time with my family. I have been teaching guitar for about two years, and I have been playing for nine. My parents put me in lessons when I was ten, and I have loved playing guitar ever since. I compete in instrument competitions quite frequently. I am the 2015 Utah State instrument championship Flat picking division winner.

I have been in a few bluegrass bands, but right now I am currently in a band with my younger brother, who plays the banjo and mandolin, and my little sister, who sings. I've played guitar with Jake Workman, from Kentucky Thunder, and also some other prominent figures in the Bluegrass community.

I love basically any type of guitar
playing but my preference is bluegrass and country. I also sing a little bit. I look forward to teaching you and sharing my passion that I have for guitar with you.
