Ear training includes interval recognition and listening for note positions within chord structures. The ear-training is approached as a partnered-learning to the theoretical concepts presented through the repertoire.
I am a NYS certified Music teacher who has been teaching in the school system for over 20 years.
I hold both my BM and MA degree in Music Education, and Jazz guitar was my major instrument in college. My focus is to teach techniques, skills and concepts for life-long learning.
I am currently available to teach Guitar, Music Theory and Beginner Piano.
Aside from teaching private guitar and piano lessons and teaching General music and Chorus in school, I perform and accompany singers as a guitarist in churches on Long Island.
For your added security, I've been VIRTUS trained with the Catholic Diocese of Rockville Centre and fingerprinted with the NYS Education department.
My system of guitar training includes:
* Right hand and Left hand technical exercises geared towards developing coordination and confidence;
work in music reading of standard music notation and TAB;
* Fretboard navigation, pick-control and fingerstyle techniques.
* Song repertoire knowledge and memorization
*Solo guitar interpretation of popular songs as well as accompaniment styles appropriate for backing your or another's voice; *Ear-training and Music theory is incorporated into each lesson.
NYSSMA preparation is available for both Classical and Jazz auditions.
Piano lessons are available with concentration in proper hand mechanics and technique, theory, ear-training and music reading. NYSSMA preparation up through level 4 is available.
*** Lesson Details *** My guitar lessons follow a structured format. I begin with technical exercises for both the picking/strumming hand and the fretting hand, leading to good sound production. As students learn to achieve well-balanced tones, they learn to apply that to the written page using standard music notation and the TAB system. From single notes, students learn to build harmony, (chords), from 2 notes, to 3, and thereafter, 4. Song repertoire is built from a variety of sources including published method books. Memorization of song repertoire is stressed.
After the student has learned the notes and scales in the first position as well as the associated chords, he/she can learn songs of his/her choosing from the Folk, Pop, Classical and Jazz repertoire that is appropriate to his/her current level.
Piano method books used include the Dozen-A-Day and Hanon technique exercises as well as the Schaum and Michael Aaron method book series'.
NYSSMA training/coaching is available for both piano and guitar with suitable training beginning a least a year before the NYSSMA audition is to take place.
The Guitar student should have a good quality guitar, (steel strings, nylon strings, or steel-string electric) professionally set-up with light-gauged strings (for the beginners), a strap, a music stand, and time and space in the home in order to encourage a daily routine of practice.
The Piano student should have daily access to a piano or keyboard instrument with weighted keys in order to be able to practice lesson material daily.
For young students, a practice chart is given where a student is to mark his/her practice time in order for progress to be made.
*** Studio Equipment *** I have a dedicated room in my home that is set up for private practice and teaching. It has an electronic piano, folding chairs, a music stand and guitar amplifiers and cables.
*** Travel Equipment *** I bring an acoustic guitar with me to all out-going lessons so that I can play along with the student and demonstrate techniques as necessary. I bring extra blank sheets of music writing paper, fret board diagrams, and study sheets, as well as extra copies of the books I use most frequently. I can purchase books/materials for the student, with the student's or parent/guardian's reimbursement, or the student may purchase materials on their own.
*** Specialties *** Pick-style and finger-style guitar, both acoustic and electric; music reading, music theory; re-harmonization and arrangement techniques to make a song your own!
Do Di Re Ri Me Fa Fi So Si La Li Ti Do! Are you ready to be an ear training wiz? Is sight singing a skill you need to master? Let me help you lock down those intervals.

*** Lesson Details *** I am a very fun loving person and believe in creating a positive environment where students feel comfortable to be themselves. At the same time I am a stickler for details and do not allow laziness. I believe a balance of fun with excellence has allowed my students to excel far beyond their own expectations. Good results takes HARD WORK! Please do not come to lessons with the expectation to sing like Beyoncé or play piano at Carnegie Hall after 4 lessons. Mastering your voice and instrument takes equal parts of time, hard work, dedication and patience.
My teaching style is individually based. For vocal clients, I asses their strengths and weaknesses and develop a plan to build up their weak areas while helping them find "their own voice". I focus on breathing, intonation and control which I believe are the foundation of great singing ability. I use a classical Italian based program along with pop, R&B, jazz, and rock. I have vocal coached in many languages including Spanish, Japanese and Chinese.
For piano clients I focus on strength, dexterity and precision in fingering. I also help students learn to feel the music and bring their personality and touch to each piece they are performing.
*** Studio Equipment *** Tanisha currently teaches at her performing arts academy the White H Arts Academy. There are private instruction rooms and a lobby waiting area for parents and guests. Parents may also sit in the lesson room if desired. Private lesson rooms include a piano, speakers, and a music stand.
The White H Arts Academy also has two state of the art mirrored dance rooms with sound systems and wireless microphones for practicing stage performances or rehearsing for a big show.
*** Specialties *** Vocals: beg to adv Piano: beg to inter
Vocal genres are classical (opera), pop, R&B, gospel, rock, jazz, blues and musical theater. I studied voice at Berklee College of Music. Have also studied Seth Riggs SLS (Speech Level Singing) method independently, however, I am not certified. I also teach in languages other than English including Spanish, Japanese and Chinese.
Piano instruction levels I teach are basic to intermediary focusing on classical, and general accompaniment abilities.
So far so good!! Tanisha was very helpful during my first lesson. Made me feel as if she has known me already. Very good at relating current events in your life to the actual coaching. Awesome!! Can't wait for my next lesson.

Itai graduated from SUNY Purchase with a BA in Studio Composition in 2007, and from Hebrew College with a Masters' Degree in Jewish Education in June, 2016. He has been working in after-school, Hebrew school, camp, and other supplementary educational settings for over ten years. Itai's Hebrew students are either studying for their bnei mitzvah, maintaining their conversational Hebrew, or learning for the purpose of competence of services or Torah study. His piano students have ranged from five-year olds just starting, to young children learning Classical pieces, to teens learning to play the songs they like, to adults working on their songwriting and improvisation. Lessons will accommodate the student's goals. Itai's strengths are improvisation, music theory and ear training, and accompaniment of popular songs - rock, theater, pop, folk,
etc. As a musician, Itai writes songs, composes music for communal singing, improvises, and plays in a Klezmer band. Aside from tutoring, Itai works as a songleader, teaches at the Hebrew school at his synagogue, growing a new outdoor Hebrew school, and occasionally teaches at an outdoor education program.
Please feel free to get in touch and ask questions!
Please note that there's a name I don't use anymore and one of my reviews reflects that. Yes I am the same person.
Please note that there are cats in my home studio.
Having a trained ear is important in the music world. Being able to read music is one thing, but being able to understand and hear the subtle differences between chord progressions, genres of music, and melodies makes improvising and playing with other musicians more "musical".
I'm a Berklee College of Music graduate with a degree in Film Scoring, I have over 15 years of piano experience. I currently work in the gaming industry by creating music and sound design. Being a full time audio nerd, I will help you not only learn how to read and play music, I can teach you the basics of how to write your own music, may it be simple piano pieces to orchestral scores!
Playing piano is one of the most exhilarating instruments to play; you'll be able to understand music theory better, have a great ear, make it easier to learn other instruments, and learn how to play any song to your liking. The possibilities are just endless.
I have been looking to pick up piano again after a long break. I found Lorenzo and he has helped me brush up
on my technique and has made playing fun again. Lorenzo is patient but keeps challenging my abilities and has made me greatly improve my skills. I would highly recommend Lorenzo as a piano teacher to anyone!

Lorenzo is an incredible teacher. My 7 year old has been taking lessons with him for a little over a year. Although she is very shy, she quickly warmed up to him. He is a natural, especially with children. He is very professional, patient and motivating. She always looks forward to her next lesson with "Mr. Lorenzo".

Lorenzo is a wonderful teacher that is patient and has a great personality. I highly recommend him!
Private ear training lessons are a great benefit for the student interested in pursuing music in college, composition lessons, or to better yourself as a musician. It can be taught in conjunction with music theory (recommended), within an instrumental lesson, or by itself.
I believe in teaching all aspects of musicianship when learning an instrument such as music theory, ear training, and singing, just to name a few. I have been private teaching for more than 8 years and I specialize in trombone, music theory/ear training, and piano lessons and have taught a variety of levels. I provide a very inviting environment for students to learn and grow.
* In case of allergies, I will mention that I have 2 cats in my home. Let me know if this is a problem so we can work out a different location.
Great first lesson. I look forward to many more. Thank you

Alexis is very encouraging and patient. She understands my questions even when I am not able to explain them fully. Her lessons are fun and engaging. I made huge progress within a short period of time. I would highly recommend her!
My goal as a teacher is to give you the facility to express yourself through music. The key parts to developing this facility are:
1. theory -- if you know your theory, you know the best way to express your idea without having to think about it 2. technique -- the last thing you want is for your technique to hinder your ability to express your idea. Having good technique lets your ideas flow naturally
When you take lessons with me, you get out of it what you put in. Your job as student is to be honest with what you expect to achieve and my job as teacher is to give you the tools to achieve it
I am a bass player first, not a guitarist who also teaches bass. Students will learn technique, theory and groove from a teacher who understands that as bass players, we are in a unique position. Since bass is both a harmony and rhythm instrument we have the opportunity to develop into leaders in a way other instrumentalists don't. I will encourage students interested in exploring this aspect of their instrument
I have a degree in jazz performance from The Ohio State University and have played in numerous rock, jazz and off-broadway bands over the last 20 years. Now playing is something I do primarily for fun and my #1 goal is always that my students have as much fun playing as I do
David went over basic music theory and rhythm with me, and corrected some technique issues. He explained things clearly and when we put some of it into practice in the final minutes I saw instant results. Absolutely excited to do my homework and for my next lesson.
July 10, 2019
As a beginning, self-taught bass player of four months, I wanted to find a teacher who could analyze and critique my playing. I scheduled five lessons with David over a time period of three months. David was instrumental in analyzing and critiquing bad techniques and habits I acquired. He very thoroughly emphasized proper fretting technique and finger positioning; exercises were given that helped me obtain full tonal quality and efficient fretboard navigation skills. We also reviewed basic theory, scale modes, rhythmic weight, pentatonics and arpeggios; seminal knowledge for the beginner.
A technical type player, David has excellent playing skills as well as a comprehensive knowledge of theory and its practical application. He is a good listener and showed a genuine interest in helping me achieve my goals. I definitely can see an improvement in my playing skills....playing more confidently and efficiently.
November 19, 2018
David has really tailored our lessons for what I was interested in doing. We are working on technique, musicianship and jazz. He was able to assess quickly where I was at with my skill set and pin point ideas and exercises to help me improve. I'm eager to keep on studying with him!
If you (or your child) are just beginning your musical training, I will start you out on learning solfege, hearing tonalities, and imitating rhythms, allowing you to learn simple songs by ear. There will be much singing, clapping, and interactive fun! If you at an intermediate level and want to focus on learning songs or parts by ear, I will help teach you efficient strategies for aural song-learning and help you figure out how to play that one song on the radio you can't stop hearing in your head! For more advanced students wishing to delve into jazz harmony or transcription, I am trained in David Baker and George Russell's approaches to jazz harmony and draw heavily from their methodology.
I hold a degree in Jazz Studies from the Jacobs School of Music, where I focused especially on Afro-Cuban music, thanks to the tutelage of Latin Jazz giants Michael Spiro and Wayne Wallace! My jazz background also gave me rigorous training in music theory and history.
My performance career is highly diverse! You like folk? I’ve played with Chicago’s beloved Al Scorch and Della Mae’s guitar star, Courtney Hartman. You like hip-hop? I play and record with artists at Classick Studios, where Chance The Rapper, SZA, and No Name make albums. Indie rock? Part of what got me into bass was underground/DIY scenes—I love playing a good basement show! How about jazz? I’ve done everything from standards gigs at hotels to composing for experimental groups like The Liberation Music Collective.
I’ve also had the pleasure to play with musicians from ov
er 20 countries. One of the most rewarding experiences of my life was being a Fellow for OneBeat, a program run through the U.S. State Department that brings together international musicians to compose, record, and tour together. I have learned so much about the power of music through my relationships with artists from all corners of the globe.
I believe in “Occam’s Razor” bass playing – finding a simple, elegant solution to the “problem” at hand, whether that “problem” is finding a good fingering for a fast-moving melody, finding a tasteful yet interesting bassline for a funk groove, or improving your right-hand speed so you can finally play that one Tool song you’ve always loved. The “Occam’s Razor” approach builds your instincts and helps you become a solid, expressive bassist that everyone wants to play with!
No matter where you are in your musical development, I can be your ally. I have experience teaching all ages and experience levels and can help you go deeper in whatever music lights you up. I can offer advice about musicianship too – how to start a band, how to rock an audition for your school’s jazz ensemble, or how to make the most of a recording session.
Bass is a physically demanding instrument, and over my career I have recovered from multiple injuries. I am committed to helping you develop healthy technique that prevents and manages injuries and adapts to your physical conditions. I try to offer compassion AND solutions to students who struggle physically with their instrument or face health challenges. I’ve been there too, and I’m here to help.
Hannah is helping me regain all that I lost fro nearly 50 years ago.
August 20, 2018
My 13 year old upright bass player absolutely loves working with Hannah. She is wonderful and I highly recommend her!
March 14, 2018
Hannah is refreshing, extremely caring, pleasant, and prompt piano instructor to my 6 and 12 yr old granddaughters. They love singing and playing the piano under her guidance and look forward to their next lesson with her. I am thankful and recommend her as an instructor.
"Ms. Jackson is a dynamic teacher whose energy elevates my soul!"
"I found Carlos to have the vest combination of traits to find in a teacher. He is knowledgeable about his subject, he explains the material well to the st
udent, and he is a warm person. TO me this is the definition of an excellent teacher! Thank you Carlos."
"Carlos has been an excellent mentor, instructor in my music journey so far. He has guided me in not only academic areas, but also career and business area
I still remember his Ear Training lessons from 8 years ago, which was how I met him. He opened up my perception to music in ways I didn't know existed. To this day I continue to learn from him and I will forever be grateful to him.
He is one of the kindest people I have met and genuinely cares for his students growth."
"First lesson went very well. Zack held our daughters interest and she was quite interested in the piano lesson."
"Beautiful voice and beautiful human and beautiful teacher!"
"I needed help singing in the church choir. Rebekah was amazing and personally took the time to teach me and work with me to help me to be able to sing
in the choir on Christmas Eve. She was very patient and never criticized, but gently taught me to sing various styles of notes. I'm not a musical person, so I can't really get the terminology right, but she helped me to be able to located the different notes in the hymnal as I was singing. On Christmas Eve, with Rebekah's lessons, I accomplished what we had set out to do and was able to sing in the Christmas Eve service.
I've also known Rebekah personally for a long time now. She is full of personality and is exciting to be around. She is very professional and kind to all of her students. She is patient, considerate, and her students thrive under her supervision. I would highly recommend anyone to chose Rebekah as their personal instructor and not only for themselves, but for their children as well."
"Francesca is an amazing teacher and support of your voice. She encourages you to find your voice, and embrace it's natural capabilities. She super dedicat
ed to her career, and has a lot of students, but always take her time with you. I couldn't be more satisfied with my progress in such a short time. I highly recommend Francesca!"
"I have been working with Jesse for a few years now. I am bummed that the subject section of this review only lets me select one subject. Jesse has helped
me with ear training, theory and composition, piano, performance, harmony, and overall musician advice. I cannot think of a more authentic and caring mentor and teacher out there that could be as efficient and helpful as Jesse has been to my career. I have seen a lot of progress in my musical career and my confidence as a musician has grown thanks to Jesse! He genuinely cares about the art and his students, he gets involved in their music careers and makes sure that the lesson is learned. He is familiar with many approaches and works hard for his students. Music is very lucky to have Jesse as a teacher!"
