I tried to teach guitar in the same manner in which I teach every instrument. First I teach students the rudiments of the instrument. Also I teach them how to read and a bit of music theory. From that point I like to follow the students lead. They bring in songs that they would like to learn, or possibly how to play lead guitar, or how to finger pick. At every point I try to point out general aspects of music that need to be learned from the material that they choose.

I've been teaching acoustic guitar for 7 years (since I was a teen myself!). Within the first few lessons, you'll be able to read and play from basic tabs, and as time goes on we can work on songs you pick yourself. I generally don't teach guitar students to read sheet music unless they ask; this is because in the "real world" of playing musicians, guitarists rarely use actual sheet music except in a classical setting. I specialize in beginner and intermediate acoustic, pop, country and fingerpicking style. Students should have and bring their own guitar. I will work with students ages 6+, but I recommend waiting until close to age 10 for guitar, as it requires some hand size/strength to reach many chord shapes. Ukulele is a fun option for smaller kids 6+ and I teach that too!
About Maya

I have been playing guitar for over 25 years, and I been a student of Dave's since 2008. As part of his teaching style, Dave works with his students to identify their goals and expectations for studying guitar. He uses this information to tailor lessons to the individual students based on their level of expertise. Dave incorporates his terrific knowledge of music theory into his lessons so his students learn to play guitar (e.g., the theory behind a particular music style or technique), not just how to repeat a song. Dave's instruction has helped me become a more well rounded guitar player with better practice habits focused on improving my playing. I would strongly recommend Dave for beginner, intermediate, or advanced guitar players that want to learn how to play guitar."

As far as guitar playing tips go, understanding proper form should be at the top of the list! Here, North Wales, PA guitar teacher Nathan D. shares the basics... As a multi-instrumental musician, I am constantly checking my form to prevent strain or injury. Hours of improperly played guitar, piano, violin, and even clarinet can make one's fingers and elbows throb, and the impact of playing drums too hard with poor form can cause major injury to wrists all the way to your shoulders. …
