I have been playing viola for 20+ years and I adore the sound and feel of the instrument. Playing viola has some unique challenges that make it just a bit more special than some of the other string instruments. I like tailor my lessons to the needs of each student. I like to focus on literature written specifically for the viola with some violin transcriptions. I strive to develop good musicianship, understanding of basic theory and good technique in both hands.
About Melissa
I began playing violin at age 10 after years of singing in children's choirs. I continued my musical journey at Sam Houston State University where I earned a Bachelors degree in Music and my Texas All Level Music teaching certification. I was a middle school orchestra director for 17 years. During

I have over 6 years of experience teaching private lessons in addition to teaching seminars on songwriting and music business at Infinity Visual and Performing Arts and SUNY JCC.
I teach both online and in-person lessons at my studio in Nashville and offer 30 and 60 minute lessons.
I have played over 1,000 shows, both solo and as an auxiliary musician for other touring acts. I performed on over 30 albums and have composed for radio, television, and internet video series, including sharing the stage with members of the 10,000 Maniacs. I've been featured in The New York Times, on the CBS Evening News, and on NPR.
While each student is different, I do generally start everyone on either Suzuki or the Essential Elements books.
As one of my old teachers said, “I'm not teaching you how to play cello, I'm teaching you how to teach yourself how to play cello.” This is something I strive for. Students will not only learn technical skills( how to play their instrument, read ...

My 6 year old son and I are both students and love him!
It’s the same for my son. He has been teaching my son sight reading and the importance of practicing every day. I can already see an improvement!"
Ahmad takes difficult concepts and breaks them down into small, easy to understand pieces. Harmony concepts that I thought I wouldn't be able to grasp, I understand fully and use every day. He has a ton of tips that make learning so much faster. For instance, you learn how to find any note on the neck quickly without having to memorize the whole neck, which is crucial skill. Another great thing is that he uses tablature in his lessons. So, you don't have to know how to read music to get started.
If you ever want to write your own music or play with other people, call Ahmad now. He will make sure you learn the right way. I'm writing music and playing/improvising solos, at a level I thought I would never be able to achieve. Every lesson opens new possibilities."

Read on as Tucson, AZ tutor Blake C. shares his strategy for understanding the relationships between the notes on the page: One of the most difficult things about learning how to read sheet music for the piano, as opposed to most other instruments, is that there is not just a single melody to be played. Piano music requires you to play more the one part at a time. Usually t …
