This is my primary instrument, on which I have over 19 years of playing experience. I am ready to help you get better whether you just bought a trumpet or are studying music in college.

About James
Hello everyone! Please have a look around my profile and feel free to contact me. I have taught privately since 2009 and joined takelessons.com in 2014.

I strongly feel each student needs lesson goals tailored to what he or she wants to take away from music. Getting ready for a college performance degree, making it to state solo contest, surviving band music, or simply discovering the huge scope of music available to us these days are each worthy goals, but require different preparation. I will work with you to figure out where your interests lie and focus on those, first and foremost!

My education includes bachelor's and master's degrees in trumpet performance from Lawrence University and UW-Milwaukee, respectively. In addition to my private studio, I maintain an active teaching schedule with the Fairfield Jr/Sr High School marchin
g band and Oregon Crusaders drum and bugle corps, as well as freelancing throughout Michiana.

Thanks for your time, and happy practicing!

*** Studio Equipment ***
I can provide: music stand, method books during lessons, recording equipment for lessons, tuner, metronome

Students should provide: instrument/mouthpiece, any other music they would like to play

*** Specialties ***
I have spent most of my playing time on classical (orchestral, chamber, and solo music), but also welcome students interested in jazz up to an intermediate level, especially if they have an interest in playing lead trumpet.

My beginning trumpet students will learn trumpet playing basics, care, as well as how to read notes of the treble clef. Basic music theory, along with major scales, will also be taught (time signatures, note durations, etc.). Students will learn technical skills as well as musical skills in a comfortable, fun environment. I typically use either the "Best in Class" book series or the "Essential Elements" book series. :)

My intermediate trumpet students will continue to build upon the beginning framework. We will work on various scales other than major scales. More challenging music will be covered! :)

About Elyse
Who has music and teaching as their biggest passion?

See below... :)

Hello, Parents & Students!
My name is Elyse (the answer is me!), and I teach a wide array of great (mainly musical) things! Thank you for checking out my page!
A few key points to know about me:
*I graduated from Kent State University (Kent, OH) in December, 2009, with my Bachelor of Music in Music Education degree (Magna cum Laude).
*I’ve taught music in small ensembles and marching band camps since July, 2007.
*I taught from 2010-2016 in the Texas Public Schools as a General Music teacher/Choir Director.
*I taught theatre for one year.
*I am a VERY enthusiastic, fun-loving teacher who enjoys laughter and bringing smiles to my students.
*I do, however, structure our lessons in such a way that we have that fun while remaining on track.
*The Clarinet was m
y instrument of study in college.
*RANDOM: I love to read, sing, and listen to music, I love cats, chocolate, and my family/friends. Pink is my favorite color, and Hanson is my favorite band!
*My most recent new student, after his second lesson, asked if he could take piano more than once a week because “it’s so fun!” 😊

***Philosophy***
—If you're going to make a mistake, make a loud one!—

-My students know (I make sure of this) right off the bat that it's okay to make mistakes! My philosophy is: YOU make mistakes. Mistakes don't make YOU. We fix them together, and we learn together. Also: never apologize for making a mistake; that is why we’re working together and you’re practicing at home!

***Teaching Style***
-I'm definitely a fun-loving, outgoing person.
-My teaching style is tailored to each of my students;
- I try to think-outside-the-box as much as possible and utilize creativity.
-I talk as little as possible in lessons; my goal is for the student to play as much as possible. With beginners, I may have to talk a bit more.
-I often model for the student what they should do: example: middle c position on the piano.
-If seeing ME isn’t enough for my visual learners, I will utilize a video clip.
-For my tactile learners, sometimes I have to move their fingers into position myself.
-For my sound learners, I will play or sing a pitch, show them the slide position or fingering to that note, and have them try to match it by ear.
-I also question my students.
-I have many other techniques as well.
-I am VERY much pro Positive Reinforcement!

*** Lesson details ***
-I am NOT a rigid teacher; I am pretty relaxed.
-However, I am VERY adamant about practicing between lessons - no matter what type of instrument you may be learning. It is the only way to improve. :)
-We will ALWAYS begin with a warm-up, we may/may not move into rhythm exercises, possible ear training, music theory, and your music.
-The list of all that I teach is on my page, but I teach all wind instruments (woodwind/brass), piano, and voice. I also teach acting techniques and improvisation skills.

***Students’ responsibility:***
-Daily practice is strongly recommended. It is important and necessary for steady progress.
-For piano lessons, students should have neat, clean, trimmed nails at every lesson.
-Students should bring water to voice lessons.
-Reed players should ensure they have working/non-cracked reeds.
-Brass players should ensure all valves/slides are oiled/greased.
-Students must be prepared for each lesson.

***Parents’ responsibility:***
-Parents should remain until their child’s lesson is complete.
-Parents should regularly check and support the students practice routine.

*** Studio Equipment ***
-One Yamaha keyboard w/pedal; space for parents to sit and observe lessons.
-Music stand
-Square chairs to sit on

IMPORTANT NOTE: My home, where my studio is located, is inhabited by four very sweet cats. Keep this in mind when you plan to sign up for lessons. :)

I teach the trumpet from the perspective of a professional performer. I have been academically trained, but my teaching breaks from traditional academic norms. I have experience performing in almost every style of music that involves the trumpet. I use that experience to help you learn to play the music you want to play, the way you want to play it. We approach the lessons this way whether you are interested in jazz, classical, pop, R&B, salsa, or tejano. You name it, I can get you there.

About Eddie
Eddie has a unique teaching style that helps you learn how to teach yourself. He teaches a learning philosophy he calls The Art of Accumulative Practicing. When done correctly, Eddie's methods will make every minute of your practice time count towards your progress. If you practice ten minutes, then you will be ten minutes better when you put your instrument in its case.

Trumpet students should know that Eddie has written a number of method books, some of which have been used by trumpet players around the world to help them with their tone, range and endurance. If you are having trouble with your chops, Eddie's reputation as a "Chop Doctor" may be precisely what you're looking for.

Eddie is also an established jazz improvisation teacher. Some of his past students are considered the best jazz musicians of our day.

Mr. Lewis has extensive knowledge in both classical and jazz disciplines. His extensive study and performance in both genres on the horn offer invaluable knowledge to cater to his students. I think the defining factor of Mr. Lewis is that he will guide his student to where the STUDENT wants to go. He will always work towards the STUDENT'S goals, the STUDENT'S sound, and the STUDENT'S aspirations. He never makes the lessons about himself, or sounding like him. He makes lessons personal and STUDENT-GUIDED. And with his endless vault of knowledge, there is no limit to how far he can take a student.

Mr. Lewis remains professional but can also develop sympathetic, personal relationships with his students. He is always organized and EVERY bit of work that he does for his students remains on the top of his priority list on his computer. His organization makes every lesson expedient and effortless. He remains to be the most caring and thoughtful teacher and human that I have met.

I have had multiple trumpet teachers in the past, but no one I have studied from amounts to a fraction of what Mr. Lewis is. Mr. Lewis isn't just a great trumpet teacher, or classical teacher, or even jazz teacher. He embodies the role as a mentor and guide through the study of expression through the medium of music, and has helped me become a more mature individual.

William is probably one of the only players that I've seen understand the ins and outs of trumpet playing at his age. He really helped me out early into high school and has continued to inspire me in trumpet playing. While taking a lesson he evaluates every aspect of playing and gives lots of instruction that applies to much of trumpet playing. The inspiration he gives is the most essential trait he shares with students. William is a positive influence and an amazing teacher!

Not only is he a fantastic player and knowledgeable teacher, but he is easy going and an overall great person to be around. He takes the lessons at a comfortable pace, and will always be honest about your playing. I would recommend him to everyone in the area, after only a few lessons, I can already see a difference in my playing, I've never been more excited to pick up my horn. If you're considering finding a teacher online, he would be a great choice, no matter the skill level.

Hey there, trumpet players!
My name is Scott Watts and I have worked as a professional musician and private instructor for 15 years, starting my musical career playing at Benaroya Hall with the Seattle Symphony and in jazz clubs in my teens. Over the years I have performed across the United States, Canada and Europe; working with and performing alongside some of the biggest names in classical, jazz, latin, and irish music. Notable persons include Gerard Schwartz and the Seattle Symphony, Wynton Marsalis, the Dropkick Murphys, Roy Hargrove, and Bobby Shew to name a few!

While many teachers have a set cirriculum that they have their students adhere to, I customize my lessons for each individual student. I have worked with a wide variety of students of different ages, musical backgrounds and preferences. While my students are most certainly challenged regarding practice routines and expectations ("Only Practice on the Days You Eat!"), you'd be hard-pressed to find a single student or ...

About Scott
Hey there Trumpeters and Potential Trumpeters!

A few more notes about myself and my background...

I've spent most of my life working as a musician, since 1999, when I was 13. I took to the trumpet on the suggestion of an amazing public school music teacher when I showed up asking to join the jazz band without the ability to play an instrument or even read music...(had no idea what I was doing at the time)!

However, I started taking lessons with him that summer and by the end of the school year I'd gone from bottom chair to lead in every group at school and within a couple of years started performing with my teachers and with professional musicians in the greater Seattle area, then hitting the recording studios. By 15 I was invited to be a guest musician with the Seattle Symphony.

I studied under the Principal Trumpeter of the Seattle
Ballet company from 14 to 18 and went to college with a passion for music. I studied music at the University of Maine and University of Nebraska at Omaha, performing, touring and teaching along the way. During that time, I joined a few small jazz ensembles, along with the university bands as well as a 20+ irish-rock group that I continue to play and tour with today.

I have also worked as a firefighter for over five years, and recently completed my training at Creighton University and earned my license to serve as an EMT in the state of Nebraska...maybe going for paramedic as well. I love working with and helping people!

I have a number of students in the Omaha area now and I would love to meet you (whether for online for online or face to face for in-house lessons) and see if you would like me to help you become the amazing trumpeter and musician that you want to be!

Thanks for your consideration and I look forward to meeting you!
- Scott

Good day!
I have taught occasional trumpet lessons ever since I was in High School six years ago. Beginner trumpet students start with basics such as lip buzzing, mouthpiece buzzing, and easy songs. Eventually, they will learn about playing with a desirable tone as well as instruction on playing solos and etudes. I play both classical and jazz music on trumpet.
If I sound like a fit, then don't hesitate to press the green button!

About Edward
You may think it’s strange to talk about a story that is unrelated to music, but read on to find out why this story is important to Alex Lewis’ life as a music teacher. Mr. Lewis has always been a curious guy. Having worn glasses for his entire life, Alex Lewis was interested to see what contacts were like. Usually, he would have just accepted what he was told. However, this time, he was determined to wear contacts. So, Alex Lewis attended a different eye doctor rather than his original doctor. Even then, he was told that he would not be able to wear contacts. But he was still determined to try them out. Surprisingly, the contacts worked! Little did Mr. Lewis know that this would be the start of a different chapter in his life.
It was perhaps not surprising, then, that a new emphasis on education had begun to develop. Shortly afterwards,
Mr. Lewis accepted a new job as a piano teacher at the Piano Studio. Using the lessons he had learned from his visit to the doctor, Mr. Lewis started to form his philosophy on teaching. No matter what the challenges of the student, Mr. Lewis will always strive to work through those challenges and do his best to successfully teach that student.
There have been a few piano beginners that have come by the Piano Studio that were assigned to Mr. Lewis’ teaching roster. When they started, they were clearly some of the hardest beginners Mr. Lewis has had to work with. One parent even remarked that her child would be impossible to teach. That parent was fortunately wrong! For months, now, this student follows Mr. Lewis' instructions very clearly and has been paying attention every lesson. This is an example of how Mr. Lewis' tenacity has paid off.
With a full studio of nearly twenty students per week while attending San Jacinto College, Mr. Lewis stuck by with this principle of never giving up. Even when it seemed discouraging, he never gave up on any of his students as long as his students never give up on themselves. This, he believes, is what separates teachers who are passionate at their work, and teachers who just try to get by.
Currently, Mr. Lewis teaches at the Piano Studio in Webster, TX, while attending the University of St. Thomas. Additionally, he performs weekly at the Alvin United Christian Church as the staff organist and pianist.

Edward's a very patient teacher and accomplished pianist. I've played the piano a bit on my own, but he gave me a detailed orientation into the theoretical side and technical side of piano. He gives me a large plate of work every week, and expects me to do this work. My progress isn't immediate, but it's going smoothly and it IS progress. I would suggest Edward for both begginers berly learning and for experienced players trying to learn more. Don't be shy with him. He can be a bit qwerky, but there is a method to his madness.

I haven’t taken lessons from Edward, but we have played together since high school band. I’ve seen him play in concerts as a soloist and he is very musical on both piano and trumpet. We also played a trumpet solo with piano accompaniment that he wrote and it was a list of fun. He’s a great guy to work with and is very understanding of any problems you’re having as a musician. I’d definitely recommend Edward as a lesson teacher for both trumpet and piano.
