Covering the essentials of theory, I make sure the student is able to fully grasp everything they need to know about the music they are working with. If they want to be classically trained, I make sure they know the history and intent of pieces that are important to the genre and the music they will perform.

If the purpose of the student is composition or more modern music, we cover the essentials and focus on what a composers decisions actually do to the music they write.

Regardless of focus, all students will have a thorough understanding of any music they see or listen too, and be able to write.

About Joshua

Joshua has been a musician for over seventeen years and has been teaching for nine. He is an award winning composer, critical thinker, and an straight-forward teacher. Leanna is incredible. She's kind and patient and extremely easy to work with, which is rare for someone with such deep experience in a field. One thing that continued to stand out and amaze me is her unbelievable ear. Even in remote sessions via zoom, she could tell immediately if one note in a chord or progression was off, and helped me fix it. I've heard the same from other students of hers.

If you're a serious student, considering music as a career, or in any competitive sense, Leanna is an irreplaceable ally with the skill to push you further than you may have thought possible. Absolutely recommend.
Zachary
As a beginner, taking lessons with Leanna has offered a structured approach to learning the fundamentals of piano, along with developing good technique, which has made the process less daunting. After only a couple of lessons, I feel more confident not only in my playing, but also in understanding elements of music theory (like reading sheet music) that I expected to be more difficult to grasp.

Excellent goal-oriented teacher! Leanna is able to provide effective feedback and instruction to an advanced student like myself. I was impressed with the detailed coaching provided in the online environment.

I've taught music theory to bass players, guitar players, keyboard players, even a drummer! I wrote Austin Guitar School's music theory course, and I enjoy helping people understand what they're doing, and how to do it better. Knowledge is power!

About Rob

I'm a professional bass player in Austin Texas, the Live Music Capital of the World. At one time or another I've played just about every style of music, and I have more than a decade of teaching experience. Rob will meet you where you are and guide you to where you are trying to go. He is extremely knowledgeable, accommodating, and encouraging.
I play left-handed, and he is the first teacher to not hassle or try to sway me to be anything but me.

He has been playing 40+ years, and proven his commitment through study which culminated in graduating from the Bass Institute in Los Angeles. He brings a level of both scholastic and practical knowledge which is well worth the price of admission.

Rob is going to provide a level of knowledge and personalized coursework that is absolutely not going to be had elsewhere. Due to my location, we conduct the lessons online. I will say it has not been a hinderance. I started lessons with tempered expectations, but Rob has continually gone above and beyond.

Anybody looking to deep-dive into the culture, craft, and practice of playing bass would be extremely well served to seek out Rob.

Great teacher! We went over the different chords and he picked out a song I liked to go over together and made me some sheet music with the fret positions labeled for each note. He was patient and gave me room to fix my own mistakes.

I'm enjoying my bass lessons with Rob. He explains every concept thoroughly and always checks in with me to make sure I understand what he's teaching. He responds quickly to any questions I have in between lessons. I also appreciate the notes he provides after every lesson as it gives me something to practice and helps me review what I learned.

Wonderful!

Samantha D. is wonderful. My kids play so well for only 1 year'sworth of lessons. I would highly recommend her to anyone! I am blownaway by the music that comes out of the Piano from a 7 and 11 year old.My 11 year old signed up for her first music competition at school. Ifyou told me one year ago I would have girls playing a piano, I would notbelieve you. I truly thought they would quit after a couple of months. Not the case. They are musically talented and still love it. Thanks toSamantha D! They are now thriving in the in-school music program.Thank you, TakeLessons, for filtering out the best teachers. When achild has a small window of interest, you have to grab it the rightway...the wrong teacher would not have given me these results.

My granddaughter, Katelynn, enjoys her trumpet lessons with Samantha. Samantha is caring, seems to enjoy teaching & has patience; which is needed since Katelynn needs a little extra attention learning things

Highly Recommend her!

My daughters (10, & 6) have only had three lessons with Samantha! They love it. Her nature is kind and welcoming. She can tell how much they can handle so doesn't overwhelm them with too much theory or pieces to play. She strikes a nice balance. My 10 year old started composing her own song when she became bord with the beginner book! Samantha has added to this excitement and changed her teaching style to match my daughters learning style. My daughter was beaming! Samantha has taught her how to take the next pieces of theory and add it to her song. She also ordered music my daughter enjoys like Selena Gomez. My 6 year old is excited every week and doesn't want to be late. My husband and I thought this would be just another thing to start and quit. So far they are going strong!

"Before attending Berklee College of Music, I had zero formal music theory training. In addition to that disadvantage, I've also struggled with a learning disability my whole life. Because of all this, once classes started, I quickly realized I was in way over my head, and requested a tutor to help- which is when I met Eli! After our first session, it was clear that "knowledgeable" or "helpful" are really understatements when describing his level of expertise. What Eli is, is brilliant- he knows music theory like the front and backs of his hands, and is able to COMMUNICATE it to you in a clear and easy way. Not only did I learn more effectively with Eli's help, but my music theory professor nominated me for the music theory spring scholarship award, and I won! I never would have gotten as far as I did in my music theory studies without his help; I truly admire his intelligence. And lastly, but certainly not least-ly, he is an absolute PLEASURE to work with- I didn't just get a great tutor, but I got a great friend too! Please do yourself a favor and work with Eli, I can promise you you won't be disappointed!"

Understanding Music Theory Through Colors

Struggling to understand a music theory concept? Sometimes, all it takes is a tweak to the way material is taught for a student to really grasp it. Here, Pittsburgh voice teacher Jennifer V. reveals her unique ROYGBIV method...   Has your child ever come home in tears because they just couldn’t master a skill they learned in school? You listen, wipe their tears and tell them “Tomorrow is a new day,” and “I know you can do it!” But the next day he or she comes home upset about th …
