I teach beginners through early advanced levels and have been doing so for 30 years. In my studio you will begin with the basics and when those are solid, you may choose a classical or recreational path or combine the two. The studio curriculum includes various styles and genres of music so you will be getting a well rounded education. Scales, chords and technique are also taught.

A positive reinforcer every minute. Linda's teaching and coaching give me hope.

If your child is interested in learning to play piano and read music, I would definitely recommend Linda Bates. I have truly enjoyed watching my daughter grow through her lessons.
She was only 5 1/2 when she asked to start learning piano, and even though I thought she might be too young, I didn’t want to discourage her. Linda said that as long as she could count from 1-10, knew her left from right and the alphabet through “G” she could start learning piano.
We have had stretches of easy sailing and lots of rough patches. It’s been a great set of life lessons for our family.
Linda tried several different approaches to see what would work best for my daughter. She has a great balance of patience, structure and encouragement. She’ll let my daughter chatter on about (non-piano related) stuff for a minute, and then, gently but firmly, get her back on track.
We have gone to several recitals and enjoyed hearing her other students play. We are consistently impressed.
My daughter has been taking lessons for two years now, and finally loves piano. She sees the benefit of working at something that doesn’t come easy. She practices every day without complaining! (She’s practiced every day for a while now, but there was A LOT of resistance in the beginning, and middle, lol). Now she knows that most people are not just naturally talented, they actually put in time and effort.
I’m sure Linda would be great for any adult too. One of these days I just might have to find out for myself... although my daughter keeps insisting she’s going to teach me!
Julia
My friend, whose son received a music scholarship as well as enjoyed his piano lessons highly recommended Linda to me. Linda's great experience and personal methodologies guide students in the shortest way to success and brings an appreciation of music into their lives. No moments during her lessons are wasted on unrelated matters and she always keeps students focused by moving from one activity to another, and by being friendly and encouraging. She is always flexible with her schedule and pleasant to work with. She is a rare instructor who works hard to give students the opportunity to perform in public venues a few times and year (the most favorite moments to my boys), which make children self-confident and proud to demonstrate the fruit of their effort. I have two children who are taking lessons with Linda and they love it: 11 years old (for six years) and 8 years old (for four).
Daily practice at home for my children has turned into a fun habit, and I do not have to be involved much anymore. Linda is a role model for how an instructor should be and I highly recommend her to everyone. I am very thankful to Linda for bringing such an appreciation and joy of music into my sons lives. Our family moved to Portland three months ago, but we are still driving to Olympia once a week for lessons because so far we cannot find another instructor with the same excellent qualities.

"I took piano lessons from Howard for a few years. I grew up taking piano lessons and Howard has been the best piano teacher I have ever had. He loves playing the piano and teaching and has incredible and insightful techniques which really work and take you to the "next level" of understanding and playing the piano. I liked the variety of aspects we worked on -basic theory, scales, exercises, etc. which were very balanced as well as pieces-at a variety of levels. We also worked on inspiration/improvisation as well as songwriting. He can do everything! What I also like about Howard is that you can tell him what you want to work on and he accommodates that and then just guides you in that direction and gives you techniques to build and enhance in those areas. He explains things very well and is very kind and patient. Howard is a rare teacher and I highly recommend him! (The only reason I am not taking lessons now is because of work/moved). Try the lessons for yourself!"

"I've thoroughly enjoyed my lessons with Saturday so far! As a classically trained singer who has spent all of the quarantine away from choral ensembles and a capella groups, it was absolutely refreshing to be able to dive into a different aspect of music (in my case, broadway singing) while touching up on the music theory aspects of the genre itself. I've been pleasantly surprised by the way that Saturday has been able to relate the more modern styles of singing to what I am already comfortable with while keeping the mood of the lessons fun yet efficient. It's definitely been worth my time and I'm excited to continue learning with them."

How Long Does it Take to Learn Drums?

How long does it take to learn drums? Find out the reality in this guest post by Seattle, WA drum teacher Mason L... If you want to master a few songs and beats, it might take a couple months; if you want to be reliable and confident enough to be in a band, it might take a year …
