Beginner to intermediate.
Mandolin is mostly known for bluegrass, but in the last few years it's become quite prominent in country, as well as other genres. It's a very fun instrument, once one gets used to the size.
Mandolin lessons mostly entail building a chord
vocabulary, and maybe learning a basic scale or two. After that students are ready to learn tons of songs.

After studying for several years under Joey Faust, I studied Jazz, Classical Guitar, and Music Theory at TCC in Fort Worth. Scott
Scott is a very patient teacher. He adapts his lessons based on the students understanding music theory and what student wants to achieve on a personal level. Personally, I was very shy and with little understanding of theory but was willing learn and apply Scott's teachings. What I didn't expect, is a life long friendship. I would highly recommend anyone who from a beginner to experienced player to Scott Sadler to expand their knowledge in music.
Georgia
I took weekly in-home lessons with Scott from (roughly) age 6 to age 13 and I could not recommend him more highly. Though I should be reviewing Scott as a teacher and musician, I feel that I should first mention Scott as a person; Learning from such a young age and through an incredibly formative time of my life, Scott became for me a sort of mentor as well as a teacher. He encouraged me to do what I cared about, allow myself to be creative, and get over the fear of making mistakes and owning my own work. Scott listens to what his students have to say, whether it’s feedback, goals, or concerns, guitar and life related alike. Easygoing, positive, and never judgmental, he creates a space where a student feels genuinely heard, and for me this was very important.

When it comes to lessons, it is impossible to miss how passionate Scott is for what he does; Scott is always full of ideas for each student and how they can use their strengths and interests, and he puts time and energy into personalizing each student’s lessons instead of simply going by the book. He does this because he is genuinely passionate about each of his students. For me, this meant turning to song-writing when I « just can’t do Taylor Swift » as I remember a 6-year-old me sighing one day, helping me learn to craft my own solos, or teaching me to write my own tabs for songs I couldn’t find yet online. Scott introduced me to blues and jazz at a young age and showed me so much about music I would never have otherwise found, and he always taught me the theory behind what we did so I understood what I was doing and could apply it on my own. I’ll never forget learning Georgia On My Mind, learning how to solo over it on my own (and do it well), and the pride of seeing what I was capable of after all that work; even 4 years later, I still know the song by heart.

In terms of capability, Scott is highly proficient and can handle just about anything you throw at him. Because he seriously knows what he is doing, he can improvise and tailor lessons to teach you what you want to learn. While I was learning, I always looked to Scott to play a piece I was struggling with to see how it could be improved, as he always played it beautifully. Listening to Scott play, I was always re-inspired or re-motivated to learn and to improve.

I’m sure I’ve been rambling for far too long at this point and I could honestly continue for a while, but I’ll spare you and simply leave it at this: I am endlessly grateful to Scott for what and how he taught and cannot recommend him more highly to anyone who wants to really learn how to play. No matter your age, experience, interests or other concerns, Scott can teach you, and teach you well.
Kimberly
Scott taught my son for 4 years before he married and moved away. Heart breaking for my son bc Scott encouraged my son creatively while teaching him fundamentals and theory. In the end Scott was teaching my son how to compose songs that my son had written. Scott is honest and great with kids.

Fun classical guitar lessons. Very knowledgeable and thorough teacher. My son really enjoyed his lessons.
Jim K.
I've been self-taught for roughly 3 years and sought lessons to help me get out of the rut that I felt I was in.

Nick has exceeded my expectations. More than just a great banjoist, Nick is a fantastic all around musician. He's intimately familiar with genres of music I've never even heard of and is able to disseminate his vast knowledge of technique and theory into easy to understand lessons. One of my favorite things about Nick is he completely caters himself to you and your goals. On day 1, we laid down goals that I wanted to pursue, and every single lesson since has been centered around getting me there. Never once has Nick tried to trump what I thought was important to work on, he just works with me and helps me lay the ground work that I need to get moving closer to where I want to be. The other thing I really enjoy about Nick’s lessons is that he’s always respectful of me as an individual, and the environment that Nick sets up for his students often times make me feel like I'm just learning from an old friend rather than the expert, tenured, musician that he truly is. He has my highest recommendation to anyone looking to better their own musicianship.

Nick is an incredible instructor! He was able to prepare me for a professional guitar audition with in 2 hour long lessons. His attention to detail and deep understanding of advanced musical techniques makes him a gem of a teacher, and a pleasure to work with. Will definitely continue lessons!

Karen is an incredibly skillful teacher. She is very passionate about music and it easy to be comfortable with her. She shares her training and knowledge very clearly. The vocal exercises seem very unique and holistic for body and voice health. She is very encouraging, caring, and soul-uplifting. I feel like I have a new connection with my voice and all that is connected to using it... as an instrument and the journey is only just starting. 45 minutes went by so fast. I am looking forward to my next lessons.

I thought I wanted to take viola lessons. Then I read her website and I realized that she might be able to help me get my voice back! I thought there was no hope ever. She has been extremely generous with her time, and I haven't seen her yet, but I'm not buying the viola I was planning on buying. I play cello, and piano still, but I am going to see if she can help me with my voice. She sounds incredible. I never dreamed that I could even have HOPE like this!

"If you’re a non-musician and you want to become a musician, and you want to do that while learning the mandolin, work with Andrew. I came to him with a limited musical background and no previous mandolin experience; he was able to assess whatever musical knowledge and literacy I had and develop it. He was holistic in his approach: we worked on theory, we worked on fundamentals, we worked on right and left hand stuff, and I was never bored or bogged down the way many adult learners can be.

I would say that within six months of weekly lessons with him I was working on sight reading music in two or three genres at moderate tempos, I was able to learn songs from listening, and I was honing my technique to bluegrass playing and going to bluegrass jams in New York. He was always attuned to my level and to what I was doing with my playing. He put a great deal of thought into lesson planning and chose to work on pieces that appealed to my individual taste, prepared me for the musical community I was breaking into, and generally kept my momentum up during my first year of mandolin playing and got me to a place I was really happy with. He was on the line when I upgraded my mandolin, because when you’re dropping a couple grand on something you call your sensei. And he was and is a great sensei.

One of my biggest musical hurdles, if not my biggest, is performance anxiety. Andrew has a great disposition for making people feel relaxed in a lesson setting; he’s an easygoing, sensitive and cool guy who can show up for you wherever you happen to be that week. He also has a really great dog named Ryder who liked to hang out during lessons.

I would 10/10 1,000% recommend Andrew. If he is not already your mandolin teacher, hire him and congratulate yourself! You are on your way to mandolin greatness."
