As an advanced player in High School, I started teaching the upright double bass to younger HS students who asked me for private lessons for their Nyssma auditions or to get better. My students all not only aced their auditions after our intensive lessons, but went on to music conservatories to study the double bass in their own right. I like to think I had something to do with sparking their love and developing their innate talent as my own early teachers did for me. I loved teaching then and I still love to pass on that spark so that this instrument will never be left without well-studied, talented double bassists. I have a double degree in Bass Performance & Music Education from the Eastman School of Music under the esteemed virtuoso and professor, James VanDemark. Whether you are a beginner/intermediate or advanced student of the Double Bass, I can help you reach that next level.

I am a cellist, but as an orchestra teacher full-time I am able to implement and teach techniques for all stringed instruments. I am well-versed in double bass making me a lower strings expert. We will use a variety of supplementary books and will have fun in the process! (:

Upright bass can be one of the most versatile instruments. Players of the instrument find themselves in settings ranging from symphony orchestras to bluegrass bands and everything in between. With the modern music world become more receptive to acoustic instruments, as well as amplification technology evolving, upright bassist can also become members of rock bands or hip-hop groups. In lessons, I teach the student how to navigate the instrument in a way that allows them to pursue whatever genre they want. I focus on skills that are universal to music, as well as specific skills for different styles of playing. As a double bassist, I have played in jazz combos, big bands, orchestras, chamber groups, and bluegrass/ old-time groups. I'm excited to share my love and knowledge of this instrument with other players!

About Eli

One of the great things about being a bassist is that you can play with a lot of different groups. From jazz combos and rock bands, to bluegrass bands and string quintets, the bass can be an integral part of each. For me, learning and playing many different types of music has added to the joy of be

If you are looking for an excellent bass teacher, look no further. You would be wasting your time. I've had a number of music instructors over the years, and I can easily say that Eli ranks at or near the top of that list.

Eli knew exactly where to start with me... he truly has an amazing ability to gauge where the student's level of knowledge is, and tailor the lesson exactly to that. Within a few lessons, I had improved my form tremendously. We covered everything that I wanted to learn, and wasted no time on things that I already knew.

What's more, a few of the instructors I have had in the past came off as a bit elitist and snobby. Eli is one of the most genuine guys around. He'll guide the lesson at your own pace, always willing to pause and show you something a second, third, or fourth time... At no point do you ever feel like you are going to ask a dumb question. This is a crucial trait of a good instructor, and Eli definitely has that going for him.

He is also quite accommodating. We typically do Skype lessons, but one there was one time that his room mate had made a slight miscalculation in the internet bill, which resulted in no internet that day. Rather than let that stop him, he actually brought his bass and amplifier on the bus, and came to my apartment to give me the lesson in person. He will make sure you get your lesson, one way or another.

My only regret is that I don't have a 6th star to give the guy! I definitely recommend him to anyone looking to learn how to play the bass guitar.

I blend progressive bluegrass, with traditional styles of playing like jazz and orchestral. I can also teach about tone and how to get a great sound so my students enjoy and have the most fun with. I can also teach other stringed instruments and can bring knowledge from them to the upright bass.

I have lots of music theory training/background, and I enjoy sharing that knowledge as well.

"Kyle has given me contra bass, aka upright bass, weekly lessons from August 2015 through May 2016. I have never played a string instrument prior to this, although I do play piano and have played the flute, bagpipes, and piccolo over the years. I did not need education in reading music.

Kyle was able to take me from sounding like a lower octave version of Jack Benny (a mid-20th century comedian famous for his howlingly horrid violin playing) to a level where I know how to hold the instrument and the bow, the fingerings, bowing technique, and how to get a very respectable sound from the instrument.

He also installed the strings when I received the new instrument, found a manufacturing flaw in the bridge height that the manufacturer subsequently paid to repair, and diagnosed a resonance issue with the instrument that was corrected with a balance weight on the string below the bridge."

"David gave my son music lessons on upright bass and electric bass in the musical genres of classical and jazz, from 5th grade through high school. David is extremely a talented and knowledgeable musician as well as being a very professional and competent teacher. David interacted effectively with my son, through the ups and downs of middle school and high school. David stuck with him and always supported him. My son's success in his high school music program was very much due to David. My son has continued on to Shenandoah Conservatory, studying Jazz performance on the upright bass. David is a working musician as well and was influential in introducing my son to the realities of music as a profession. David and my son continue to keep in touch and jam when their schedules allow. I highly recommend David Lester as a music teacher for all levels on upright and electric bass in multiple styles and genres (classical, jazz, rock, funk)."
